So graduates, please join me in recognizing the outstanding faculty and academic staff of Michigan State University (attendees applauding) Graduates, reflecting on the unique circumstances since your arrival here reminds me of a familiar quote from Charles Dickens, "A Tale of Two Cities."
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
It was the season of light, it was the season of darkness.
Spartans, some might say that your college experience was bracketed by COVID-19 and February 13.
And while those times may have challenged you and set you back momentarily, you did not let them define you because in the fullness and richness of college life here at MSU, you also experienced the best of times, deep conversations with classmates, academic accomplishments, and personal growth and club and college activities.
You took selfies was Sparty, made big noise in the east zone, found quiet healing in our green spaces, and discovered the joys of MSU Dairy Store ice cream.
Graduates your degrees prepare you for a future we try to foresee your shared experiences during times of unforeseeable challenge helped equip you for what we cannot.
And as we shake your hands later, we will acknowledge the individuality of each of you while your shared identity as Spartans has created a fierce and lasting bond that forever connects you to one another and this great university.

Thank you.
(attendees applauding) - Good afternoon, esteemed faculty, honored guests, moms and dads, and most importantly, the incredible 2023 graduates of Michigan State University.
Yeah.
(attendees applauding) I am deeply honored to stand before you today as your commencement speaker.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to President Woodruff, Provost Jeitschko, members of the board of trustees, and my dear friend, Professor Jim McCusker of chemistry who's sitting in the president's box right now watching the basketball game.
(attendees laughs) My name is David MacMillan.
I was born in Scotland in 1968.
I grew up in a small steel town just outside of Glasgow.
My dad was a steel worker, my mom was a maid.
I came to the states to do my PhD at UC Irvine in 1990.
I am now a Professor of Princeton.
In 2021, I won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
(attendees applauding) But I just wanna say, please don't worry, there won't be any chemistry in this speech.
But today, I'm not just here as a Nobel Prize winner.
I'm here as a fellow graduate, and I will begin by stating emphatically that it's a tremendous honor to receive a Doctorate of Science from this remarkable institution.
And it's with great pride that I joined the ranks of this amazing Spartan family.
I don't know if I'm officially allowed to call myself a Spartan, but I really don't care, 'cause now I feel that I'm a Spartan.
(attendees applauding) And just to make it more official, yesterday I met with Coach Izzo, and he gave me a motivational speech.
And I'm now ready to run through a wall for Michigan State.
(attendees laughs) So go green.
- Go green.
- Okay, I've been asked as part of this commencement speech to share some of my experiences and insights with you.
Many people asked me, what are the major lessons that you have learned that helped you win a Nobel Prize?
And quite honestly, I have no idea what those lessons would be, but I thought, I would tell you three quick lessons that in my life have been invaluable to me.
So lesson one, it's great to learn from others, but always follow your own path.
When I was a teenager back in Scotland, my older brother Ian, he did a remarkable thing.
What he decided to do was, he decided he wanted to go to university.
And you might think, well, why was that remarkable?
Well, in 1979 in Scotland, we didn't know anyone in our town who'd ever gone to university.
No one from my high school had ever gone to university, but he decided he wanted to.
And this was controversial.
My mom and dad thought he was just being lazy in trying to avoid going to the steelworks, which was probably true, but he decided he wanted to go anyway.
And he enrolled, he got a degree in physics, and the day after he got his degree, he got a job.
And the salary for that job paid more money than what my dad made as a steel worker after 30 years.
And at that moment, my mom and dad came to me and said, "You are going to university."
(attendees laughs) So the biggest moment of my career at any moment as I look back, was not made by me.
It was actually made by by other people.
But I went off to university and I went off to do physics because that's what my brother did.
And I absolutely, I honestly hated it.
I was terrible at physics, I just couldn't do it.
And I decided I really just didn't want to be there.
I tried to leave university, but I was so bad at interviewing.
I couldn't get any jobs.
And I would sit on this, at a one hour bus, I couldn't afford to be at the college.
So I'd take a one hour bus ride to college every day, and I would sit despondent just thinking about how could I possibly get out of being in this college experience.
Now by great fortune, as part of the curriculum, I also had to take chemistry classes.
And in my sophomore year, we were introduced to organic chemistry.
And for the first time in my life, I experienced a lecture class that was not a class, but instead it was a revelation.
I understood it, it made sense to me.
I enjoyed it.
It became a passion for me.
On my bus rides to and from college every day I would read these books, I would consume them endlessly.
It was like learning to speak another language, and it was like breathing new air.
I quickly changed my major and I loved every day of college till the day I graduated.
That same love for chemistry brought me to America and now takes me all over the world giving talks about chemistry.
Chemistry is not only my career, it has become my passport to the world.
Now, the moral of that story is that my brother was the greatest role model I could ever have wanted.
If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be standing here today.
But if I'd only tried to pursue his path of physics, I would've been miserable, I would've failed.
So learn from others, but in the end, always follow your own path and always live your own life.
Now, some of you down the front here may have already found your own chemistry, but some of you might be still trying to figure things out, and that's okay.
It might take time, but it's really worth it to sample all these things.
But it is important to find your own chemistry.
And trust me, when you do, you'll know it when you do.
So lesson two, don't let failure get you down.
Failure is just another word for experience.
After I won the Nobel Prize, I was asked to give lectures all over the world.
And strangely, after I give these lectures, the number one question I would always be asked is, how do you deal with failure?
Which if you think about it as a kind of weird question that you ask someone who's just won something, how do you deal with failure?
So in thinking about this, you know, failure can be humbling, failure can be frustrating, failure can be painful.
But in all cases, failure is always just another way of gaining more experiences in life.
So I wanted to relay this second story.
When I graduated from Glasgow University, I knew I wanted to come to America.
I loved American television.
I loved "Starsky and Hutch" I love "Cheers."
For those of you who are younger, ask your parents what that means.
(attendees laughs) And I also loved the NFL and I loved all American sports.
And so I decided to go out and I saved up all my money to buy these air mail envelopes.
And I sent them to five institutions in America waiting to hear for response.
Two months go by, no response.
So I save up more money, get more air mail, and this time I type up my letters.
Two months go by, crickets, no response.
Another five, nothing.
The 16th, 17th, 18th didn't hear anything.
But on my 19th letter that I sent, I heard back from a person called Hal Moore at UC Irvine, who sent me an application and I sent it back to Irvine and I was accepted and I went to graduate school in America.
Now I like this story because I realized afterwards the only thing that got me to the 19th letter was determination to get to America, even though it looked like all my efforts were going to waste.
And in life, this is critical.
You have to be thick skinned at times because rejection and failure will happen, and it happens a lot.
I've found people don't like to talk about failure as it makes us look somehow weak or diminished, but it doesn't have to make you less, it can make you more.
In my case, it taught me the value of staying positive.
Even when I thought my dreams of coming to America were basically gone.
And as a scientist, this lesson of staying positive when nothing is working has been the most valuable of my life.
My second failure story is about the day I received the Nobel Prize.
Now I don't mean the day I found out, but in fact, the day I was presented with the Nobel Prize, and I don't know if they can put up the first picture here.
Okay, I hope you can see that.
So this is a photograph which is very meaningful to me.
This is the day I received the Nobel medal.
And I'm surrounded by my family from both America and from Scotland.
And you're probably looking at that and thinking, "Why is that a failure?"
So let me explain.
If you look at this, you'll see that I'm actually wearing a kilt.
And if you don't know what a kilt is.
A kilt is a Scottish national costume where it looks like a skirt that men would wear, okay?
And you can see here, I'm wearing a kilt, but I'd never worn a kilt before.
And so I thought, well, I'm Scottish, I have to wear a kilt.
So I had my measurements taken, they were sent back to Scotland.
They made me a kilt, and they sent it back to me.
And I received it the day of the Nobel Prize ceremony.
And so I put it on and when I put it on, it was really, really tight.
It was really tight kilt, and to the point where I could hardly walk wearing the kilt.
(attendees laughs) My wife described it as a pencil kilt, okay?
(attendees laughs) Now, so my name came up and I had to sort of shuffle up and get the medal and then shuffle back with it.
And then even later that evening, there had a big fancy, a gala and there was dancing.
And I couldn't go dancing because of my kilt.
So I was really annoyed about this.
And I get back to the hotel.
And when I go back to the hotel, I was complaining about this to one of my friends.
And my friend looked down at the kilt and said, "Wait a minute.
And she reached down and she saw a thread and she pulled the thread out and it was a shipping thread that had been put into the kilt to allow it to come to America and stay in good shape.
And as soon as she did it, the kilt went back to normal.
(attendees laughs) So this is why I love this photograph.
This, when I look at this, I should see my highest moment of intellectual achievement, but (attendees laughs) all I see is an idiot, okay.
(attendees laughs) (attendees applauding) So always remember failure can be useful because it will keep you humble.
Okay, so my third piece of advice, and this is very serious, is try and laugh every single day.
Life can be serious, but you don't have to take yourself too seriously.
Surround yourself with people who are meaningful to you and that you love and love being around.
This means you should cherish your loved ones, your mom and dads, and cherish your friends.
And if those are really good friends, they will do the same for you.
For me, that has always been about being around people who understand the joy of life.
Remember, and this is the most important part, laughter amongst family and friends is without doubt the greatest source of wealth in life.
Okay.
(attendees applauding) Can you show the second, okay, so you're probably wondering, okay, this commencement speech is going off the rails, 'cause I'm now showing you photographs of me as a baby.
(attendees laughs) Why am I doing this?
Well, basically, after I won the Nobel Prize, the Nobel Prize people contacted me and said, "Can you send us photographs of you as a baby?"
And I said, "Why?"
And they said, "We want photographs of it for the website."
And I said, "But that's got nothing to do with my science."
And they said, "We don't care.
We just want photographs of you as a baby."
I was like, "Okay."
So I looked around my house and I couldn't find any photographs.
So I contacted my sister back in Scotland and said, "Can you send me photographs of me as a baby?"
And she did, she sent them.
And these three photographs are now on the Nobel Prize website.
But I think this is actually the greatest practical joke that's ever been played because if you look at the picture in the middle, I'm pretty sure that's not me.
(attendees laughs) I'm pretty sure that's my sister.
(attendees laughs) And she's subsequently confessed to this.
And I actually think that's one of the most wonderful things in the world, that your own sister, even at this moment is trying to sort make fun of you in an interesting way.
So that is one of the most wonderful things I think she's ever done for me.
So three lessons, follow your own path.
Learn to stay positive through failure and laugh every day.
Now I'm gonna finish off with one quick part.
Now graduates, I have told you a few of my life lessons, but I wanted to finish by pointing out that all of you have experienced some lessons that I have not learned and that the rest of us never will.
What do I mean by this?
Where you are part of the only four year college class and the history of this world who had to go out and earn a degree while overcoming a worldwide pandemic?
Think about that.
That is remarkable and substantial achievement and you should be proud of it and you should never, ever forget it.
(attendees applauding) As such, as you go forward in life, I ask you to remember all of these experiences, including the tough ones with COVID, and the great ones as a Michigan State student, beginning with the tremendous worry and stress about your own health and the health of their loved ones.
The loneliness and boredom of isolation, the frustration of zoom calls, the need for resilience, the need for drive and determination, the need to remain tough when it felt like the world was falling apart.
And then from this, the sheer joy of returning to all the simple things we previously took for granted.
The reconnection with friends and family and teachers in real life places as the world opened up.
And then the joy, success, and sense of accomplishment of learning and being part of this amazing campus life.
And now ultimately here today, earning your degree that has been the collective experience, which makes you all an extraordinary and unique group.
So my call to action is this.
Take these unique life's lessons from the last four incredible years and use them to build your careers, your families, your friendships, your loves and your lives because you are more equipped to do so than almost any other class in history.
Congratulations Spartan Class of 2023.
There is no generation of college graduate students more ready to take on the world.
Know that everyone here supports you and can't wait to see all the incredible things that you'll accomplish.
Go out there and make your mark on the world and at the same time, make your loved ones proud and make your Spartan family proud.
Best wishes, good luck.

It was a really, really, really great speech and the visuals really helped.
I appreciate what you talked about in terms of authenticity.
We just heard from our orchestra, is it Jazz Orchestra?
Jazz Orchestra who gave us the Stevie the Wonder.
He was talking about superstition.
If you believe in things that you don't understand, then you suffer.

We understand what it means to be battle tested, to be tried.
We understand also what it means to triumph.
We know what it means to be resilient and to persevere.
We know what it means to be together and to support one another.
We know what it means to be Spartans.
And as the speakers talked about earlier, you all are the most magnificent, terrific, prominent leaders of our generation.
(attendees applauding) There is no one like you.
No one has had these collective experiences that you've had.
No one has had the individual experiences you have.
So as you go forth from today, think about your authentic strength, your unique possibility, and lean into it.
You don't have a model.
You're the mold.
You are the blueprint.
You are creating what we aspire to be.
The MSU Board of Trustees greatly admires your strength, your tenacity, and your Spartan will.
Our wish for you is that will you will use your intelligence and your knowledge to improve the quality of life for our community in to advance the common good.

Indeed, as we send you forth, we are counting on you to become the thought leaders and innovators of the 21st century.
Now it is my pleasure to introduce Jessica Beach, a Fisheries and Wildlife major who has chosen by the senior class council to represent the Class of 2023.
(attendees applauding) - Hello, everybody and happy commencement.
It is an immense privilege to be here today as our cohort has faced numerous obstacles and tribulations throughout our journeys toward matriculation.
And because of this, I am even more grateful to stand here and relish with you all in the pride and congratulations exuded here by our supportive families, friends, and faculty members.
Thank you for all being here today.
I would also like to thank Interim President Woodruff, Interim Provost Jeitschko, and the Michigan State University Board of Trustees.
At a certain point in my life, I realized that the number of big life milestones left begins to wane.
And perhaps those things become more strenuous to achieve.
Nobody warned us that learning to walk would turn into learning to drive, or that the first day of kindergarten would turn into the last day of undergrad.
We have stumbled along the way, but with resilience we've stood back up and we try it again.
Our society places immense pressure on us to prioritize productivity and performance over pleasure, making it seem perfectly normal to be perpetually fixated on the next best thing or big life goal.
And that's when the exclamation of I can't wait to get out of high school becomes I can't wait to graduate college, which becomes I can't wait to settle down, which becomes I just can't wait to retire and so on.
(attendees laughs) Thus, I fear that in a world so driven by capitalism, technology, and relative standards, we have been conditioned to allow real life experiences to escape us as we keep our eyes fixated on the light at the end of the tunnel, blinded from our present realities.
Independent of our professional and academic pursuits.
The year 2023 alone has been teaming with enough emotions, challenges and opportunities for growth and resilience to constitute a lifetime.
So I don't want this one life that I have to be spent hustling just to be able to rest when I die.
And since nobody asks a child what they want to be when they grow up, expecting them to say that they want to be happy, some of us kids grow up not knowing that happiness is an admirable aspiration in itself.
Happiness is heavily influenced by circumstance and personal choice.
And it's subjective, which means that we have the autonomy to define our own happiness and pursue it in ways that make sense for each of us.
We are Spartans, which means we're problem solvers, artists, thinkers, achievers, beyond the green and the white, however, we are all human beings, which means that we each experience lives as uniquely, vividly, and dynamically as even the person next to us.
So in finding your path, I hope to empower you all to assess what it is in your own lives that you value in addition to your impressive career titles and profitable intelligence, to truly aid in your pursuits of happiness in a meaningful life.
So what comes next?
We earned our degrees.
Next, maybe we'll settle down, and one day we might retire.
But between those big life milestones, the pursuit of happiness and a meaningful life may additionally be found in the quiet movements of an everyday existence.
May we forever enable smiles, laughs, and tender moments to break up the monotony of what will soon become the rest of our lives.
Because although time may seem to be an abundant resource, it is always scarce on the individual level.
So while maybe we shouldn't live every day as if it were our last, there's also no time like the present.
Now I believe that we all came to Michigan State University with similar underlying objectives, right?
To earn a degree in a field that matters so that we can contribute to society and paved the way for our own happiness and fulfillment.
Now we know, however, that the value of a university experience is not just in its curricula, But also in those special moments when peers become friends and those friends become family.
We stand by each other's sides, learning the consequences of life's perceived miracles and tragedies like those along the spectrum of love and loss or the dichotomy of pass or fail.
These last four or five or however many years of university have taught us that we are not solely defined by our greatest achievements.
And just like that, we will never be our biggest mistakes.
We are a culmination of every experience, big or small that has shaped us along the way.
And a couple of decades ago, we were learning how to walk and now we are steps away from running the world.
So as we part on our individual journeys, stay in pursuit of that happiness, whether along the banks of the red cedar or halfway around the world, take care of yourselves and go green.
- Go green!
(attendees applauding) - Thank you, Jessica.
The Senior Class Council has worked tirelessly in support of the Senior Class Gift Campaign presentation of the Senior Class Gift will be made by Shruti Elango and Ishwari Kapale.
(attendees applauding) - Good afternoon, fall Class of 2023.
We hope that you're able to take the time you need to not only relax, but soak in the joy of the major milestone that you just completed.
I am the Senior Class Council Vice President Ishwari Kapale.
- And I am the Senior Class Council, General Assembly Liaison Shruti Elango.
- On behalf of ASMSU, the Associated Students of Michigan State University, the Senior Class Council congratulates you on accomplishing something that your younger self would be so proud of, and we hope that you push yourself to continue that drive, passion, and dedication throughout the rest of your life.
- As we prepare to leave Michigan State's campus and start a new chapter of our lives.
The Senior Class Council wanted to ensure that we focus our efforts on a fun that creates meaningful change truly embodies Spartan's will and makes an impact in the lives of students.
Every year, the Senior Class Council advocates for an organization on campus and encourages our fellow seniors to direct their class gift to that organization.
While you can support any cause that has deep personal meaning to you, the Senior Class Council would like to highlight one specifically.
- There are a lot of great efforts to support such as the MSU Food Bank.
Founded in 1993, the MSU Student Food Bank was the first in the nation to be run by students for students.
It was founded to help fight student food insecurity, which is a considerable obstacle to academic success.
We highly encourage you to consider the Student Food Bank when making your Senior Class Campaign Gift.
- With this in mind, we are proud to award this check to Interim President Woodruff and Michigan State University.
We are thankful for those that have donated to the Senior Class Campaign and encourage those that have not to do so soon.
- Our work as advocates of change only continues as we walk across the stage and into the bigger world.
And as we go forward, it is up to every single one of us to stand together and be the change that we wish to see in the world.
When we do this, we can ensure a better future for every generation that comes after.
Thank you, and go green.
- Go green.
(attendees applauding) - There you are.
(attendees applauding) Thank you very much.
I speak.

(attendees cheering) (attendees applauding) - As the last graduates returned to their seats, let me use this brief interlude for the following.
President Teresa Woodruff, you have led this class and this university out of COVID as provost of the university and through its worst year as president of the University, and you have brought the university to new heights.
For that, there's a grateful university that thanks you.
Thank you so much.
(attendees applauding) (attendees cheering) - Graduates, please rise.
(attendees cheering) (attendees applauding) Congratulations, you are now MSU alums.
(attendees cheering) (attendees applauding) And thank you, Provost Jeitschko.
We are proud of the achievements of all of our graduates in our university community.
Graduates, I will always remember the special comfort of joining as a community to hold one another up in the worst of times, and I will miss all the best of times we shared, and now we arrive at such a moment that brings to mind Emily Dickinson's poem.
I dwell in possibility know that you join a distinguished line of Spartan graduates who have contributed so much to their families, communities in the world over 162 years.
So my charge to you as you go forward is to dwell in possibility.
I wish you all lives that are joyful, loving, and rewarding, and I hope you stay connected to your classmates and this place on the banks of the Red Cedar River.
Go green.
- Go green!
(attendees applauding) (attendees cheering) I now invite everyone to stand and join in the singing of the first stance of the alma mater, "MSU Shadows."
Ms. Miranda will lead us in the singing and following the singing, we ask the guest to remain seated until the recessional of the platform party, faculty and students is complete.
