(audience applauds) We are so pleased to see you and your friends and family here today.
I speak for the entire university.
We owed you this, and we're glad we could deliver on our promise.
(audience applauds) So, good afternoon, and welcome to the September commencement ceremony, as we recognize and celebrate our graduating seniors from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the Eli Broad College of Business.
You can cheer.
(audience cheers) The College of Communication Arts and Sciences.
(audience cheers) James Madison College, (audience cheers) College of Music, (audience cheers) Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, (audience cheers) and the College of Social Science.
(audience cheers) I'm particularly pleased we can be here together to celebrate this milestone in the lives of our graduates and to recognize the dedication that it took you to get here.
We honor MSU's 166-year-old mission and certify with these degrees that our graduates are fit to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
It is an immensely satisfying feeling to look out on this group and see the faces of the next generation of problem-solvers, leaders, and creators.
In this ceremony, we honor our graduates and salute those who have achieved academic distinction.
We celebrate the special unity and diversity of the Spartan family, represented in part by the flags of the native lands of our students and by the banners heralding our colleges.
Now I ask our guests to join students and faculty in rising if they can and singing one stanza of the "Star-Spangled Banner," performed by the MSU Wind Symphony under the direction of Professor Kevin Sedatole.
The singing will be lead by Shannon Crowley, a senior in vocal performance.
Upon conclusion of the singing, please remain standing if you can for a moment of silence.

Graduates, I'd like us to pause now to allow you and your family and friends a moment of silent reflection on the opportunities for growth you've enjoyed at MSU and the relationships you've formed.
You may now be seated.
I now want to introduce our keynote speakers, who join us today by video.
Both are Spartan alumni and generous supporters of MSU.
Dan Gilbert is founder and chairman of Rocket Companies, Quicken Loans, the nation's largest mortgage lender, and the Rock Family of Companies.
He is also chairman of the 2016 NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers.
Jennifer Gilbert is a director and board member of Rocket Companies and founders of Amber Engine, a home furnishing services and solutions technology company.
She also founded Doodle Home, a digital platform for residential interior designers, and Pophouse, a commercial design firm.
Both Dan and Jennifer are active in supporting Detroit-area organizations and I'm pleased they could speak to us today.
Please welcome Dan and Jennifer Gilbert.
(audience applauds) - Congratulations to the 2020 graduating class of Michigan State University and a big welcome to all friends, family, faculty, and supporters.
Jennifer and I are honored to speak with you today.
The responsibility of sharing advice and words of wisdom were taken to heart.
When building a product or a service, it's always a good idea to get feedback from your customers early and often.
So, naturally, when we started writing this speech, we thought to do the same.
As luck would have it, we have three recent graduates right at our kitchen table, including one, Nick, who is graduating with you today.
After a few healthy debates and constructive feedback from our kids, we landed on a framework that we hope will be helpful to you as you start your new careers.
- First, it's critical that you define your own mission.
And when you define it, it should answer the question why.
Each of us have passions that drive us, but are we directing those passions to impact the world for the better?
A mission allows us to put deep thought around our efforts, identify the resources needed, and it provides a structure to add goals and milestones.
It serves as our North Star when life takes us off-course.
Author Stephen R. Covey said, "A mission statement is not something you write overnight.
But fundamentally, your mission statement becomes your constitution, the solid expression of your vision and values.
It becomes the criterion by which you measure everything else in your life."
It is important to understand that everyone's mission is different and will impact the world in various ways.
Yours may be addressing a social issue.
For others, the goal may be to become a leader in your industry or an authority in your chosen field.
Regardless of what it is, I encourage you to dig deep and think beyond what you want to become and identify how you will make the world a better place, not only when you get there but along the way.
- Once your mission is identified, the next step is to make sure your toolbox has a well thought out compass to ensure you stay the course.
Your compass is a personal set of beliefs that provide the framework for your decision-making, actions, behaviors, and priorities.
At the Rock Family of Companies, our compass is called the ISMs.
The ISMs are 20 statements that together define our culture.
We believe that our culture is so important to the success of our businesses that we require every new team member to attend ISMs Day, where we talk at length about each ISM and their creation and how they have real impact to our portfolio of companies.
Let me give you a few examples of our ISMs.
We always are raising our level of awareness.
That one's probably the most important because everything flows from being aware.
When we actually focus on what's happening around us, when we're alert and make a perpetual effort to see and understand what's happening, we can impact the outcome.
Take the roast out of the oven is about decision-making.
Our team members know taking too long to make a decision doesn't mean you'll make the best one.
Perfectionism destroys innovation.
We empower our team members to act, to make decisions, and take the roast outta the oven.
Another one that has real significant in today's age is ignore the noise.
Noise can come from countless sources: a persistent naysayer, a project or something you're involved in blows up on social media, the ball always seemingly bouncing the wrong way, or someone cut you off on the freeway on the way to work.
The goal here is to block out, refocus, and execute, regardless of circumstances.
The ISMs are our compass.
What will yours be?
Remember, a compass only provides the direction.
It's up to you to act.
Your course may change, but your compass must remain absolute.
Trials and challenges in life will require you to alter your course.
Redirect as necessary, but rely on your compass.
It will help you get to where you need to go.
- But what happens when things don't go your way?
You have a clearly-defined mission, your trusty compass in hand, and the weather rolls in, bringing with it rough and rocky seas, taking you off-course.
What now?
You adapt.
According to Darwin, it is not the most intellectual of the species that survives.
It is not the strongest that survives.
But the species that survives is the one that is able to best adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.
And this is where having a resilient attitude comes into play.
Here is one of life's unfair truths: You can have the most impactful mission and a never-failing compass, and your world will fall apart.
I say that to you with certainty.
The unexpected will happen.
It may not have anything to do with you.
It may be an external issue, but you still have to deal with it.
How we react and recover or how resilient we are makes us who we are.
No one, and I mean no one, is immune from the trials of life.
Regardless of where you are on your journey, be it as a recent graduate or someone at the pinnacle of their career, you will be tested.
You will be thrown off-course and be forced to figure out how best to get back on your path.
Our family is no different.
Our son, Nick, was born with a genetic disorder and has faced serious medical issues his entire life.
Regardless of being legally blind, undergoing numerous surgeries, and countless chemotherapy and radiation treatments, he has dug deep and kept his compass pointed at his personal mission.
He adapted, surrounded himself with a great team, graduated, launched his career, and is with you today as a member of the Class of 2020.
And that's not all.
Some of you may be familiar with Dan's stroke.
And some of you may unfortunately have firsthand experience of the immense difficulties faced as a result of a stroke or other medical issues.
In May of 2019, Dan had reached the highest point of his industry.
He, along with MSU alumni Jay Farner and 20,000 team members, had worked to make Rocket Mortgage the largest mortgage company in the United States.
The Cleveland Cavaliers had won its first championship in 46-year history.
Dan was named the chair of the Obama Administration's Detroit Blight Removal Task Force and viewed as a thought leader across the US and even internationally.
He was well on his way of executing on his mission to bring economic opportunity to all Detroiters.
And in a minute, our world changed forever.
- Jennifer's right.
At that moment, I went from worrying about mortgage originations and the Cavs winning another championship to focusing on not only surviving and discovering how to adapt to this new reality.
For more than two years, I've gone through countless hours of therapy and training.
I've relearned daily basic tasks, including walking independently and retraining my mind so that I can get back to the office full-time, which I'm on my way of doing.
My days are spent climbing my personal Mount Everest, all while keeping my eye on my personal mission.
When it feels like your foundation has been shaken to the core, there is no easy way out.
There is no silver bullet.
Instead, fall back on your personal why, which will give you reason to get up every day and do the work.
Get out your trusty compass and surround yourself with great people.
In fact, surrounding yourself with great people and the idea of a team is the final tool for us to discuss.
Maybe this is possibility the most important bit of advice.
Recruit a great team to fill your roster.
Make sure that the people you put on your roster believe in your mission, share and respect the values and beliefs that make your compass, and can help you keep moving forward when the dark clouds are gathering.
A team can be anyone: your family, your colleagues, a mentor, or a lifelong friend.
The point is this.
Nobody does it alone in this world.
In Aaron Sorkin's "The West Wing," a character named Toby Ziegler has a terrific quote about being on a team.
He said, "We're a team.
We win together, we lose together.
We celebrate and we mourn together.
And defeats are softened and victories are sweeter because we did them together."
Find your team and life seems all the more conquerable.
And make sure you're willing to get drafted on a team along the way.
- As Dan mentioned, we have a shared mission to positively impact the lives of as many people as possible.
Our personal why is applied to all areas of our life, from our businesses to our family and friends, extending to the philanthropic work we do within our community.
I believe that one of the most important ways you can impact the lives of others is by supporting your community with philanthropy.
Now, let's be clear on this.
Most people think that philanthropic efforts have to be tied to large amounts of money or hosting headline-grabbing galas.
But here's the reality.
The donation of your time is just as valuable as a monetary gift.
Your time, talents, energy, and ideas are equally, if not more, important.
Remember, when we serve our communities, we impact the world.
- I wanna pose a couple of questions to you before we leave here today.
First, what will your mission be?
As you may be reflecting on your answer, remember, Spartans will.
We are a driven group of people.
Let us act collectively to leave the world a better place.
Second, after you determine your mission, where will you find your compass?
It can be found in countless places, from your mom and dad and the values they've instilled in you to your church or religion or simply listening to your gut.
Third, will you adapt?
Will you pivot and move forward in times of great uncertainty?
Will you choose to be resilient?
Will you embrace new challenges with curiosity, dedication, hard work, and persistence?
Finally, how will you build your team?
Remember, it can be family, friends, from MSU or even those who have around your entire life.
Doesn't matter where you find your team, only that you build a great roster.
Again, congratulations to the 2020 graduates of Michigan State University.
We hope you find joy in life's journey and that as you work through your personal missions, you make your mark on the world.
