SLAVE TRADERS IMPORTED 1,300, 000 SLAVES IN THE BAHIA BEFORE SLAVERY WAS ABOLISHED IN BRAZIL IN 1888.
THAT IS DOUBLE THE NUMBER IMPORTED INTO THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
TODAY, THEIR DESCENDENTS CONSTITUTE 80 PERCENT OF THE POPULATION IN AND AROUND THE CAPITAL CITY OF SALVADOR.
THE BEST KNOWN PLACE IN SALVADOR IS CALLED THE PELOURINHO WHICH MEANS THE PLACE WHERE SLAVES WERE BROUGHT TO BE PUNISHED.
HERE THEY WERE WHIPPED IN PUBLIC, BELOW THE OPULENT HOUSES OF THE PLANTATION OWNERS WHO MADE THEIR MONEY ON THE BACKS OF THE SLAVES BY RAISING SUGAR CANE AND CACAO.
