Advocates say bail reform works but still racial disparities

Jail population has been significantly cut

In 2017, New Jersey enacted criminal justice reforms to stop defendants from being detained for weeks, or even months, because they couldn’t afford to post cash bail. Four years on, supporters say the data shows the reforms are working. Sen. Nick Scutari said the legislation is “having its intended consequences and the Legislature actually got it completely right in this instance.”
