A world premiere of a new ballet is a rare occurrence.
No, we got it.
It's special for anywhere.
World premieres are risky business.
It's a big investment.
There's a lot of overhead, a lot of resources get poured into the effort.
Just thinking of dancer hours, think of all the collaborators, all the costumes that have to be built, all the fees that are paid, royalties, all those hours of rehearsing, and then that whole effort in the theater.
When it really counts with lighting design and stage crew and orchestra.
So it's a huge financial commitment.
The entire effort could end up a bust.
Because of that and because of the economics and the arts today in this country, it's becoming a rare occasion.
We're doing three.
We like to jump off the cliff and put a gun to our head all at the same time.
John Caraffa danced for nine years with the Twyla Tharp Company.
His ballet's title is Bach's Cello Suite in G Major.
Is going to be one cello somewhere near the stage.
It's a large piece.
Almost the entire company is in it.
It's very, very colorful.
It's about youth, vitality, exuberance.
But it's also about young love.
We're doing three because Valley Med is in general connected and committed to the idea that the art of dance must move forward.
It's important to do new material, ideas that are relevant to today's times and considerations.
