We took our name from the Great Balsam Range.
The Balsam Range Mountains is the backbone of our area.
It's where the Blue Ridge Parkway meets the Great Smoky National Park.
Give you idea of where we are.
A lot of heritage associated with our style of music from the Appalachian Mountains.
And we just felt like Balsam Range was a fitting for what we play and what we do and what... We're proud of our area, so we took our home mountain range as a name.

(audience applauding) Now, when our band came together in 2007, it really just came together as a fun thing to do.
We got together, the five same original guys, we got together just to jam.
It was a fun social thing for the five of us.
We found ourselves kind of off the road.
We'd play with different groups.
Marc had been playing with Ricky Skaggs, Tim was with gospel groups, and everybody had been doing different things and kind of found ourselves a little downtime and at home, and we just got together for the fun of it.
We really had no intention of creating a band and do anything other than having some fun.
And we played three or four or five times in somebody's kitchen, just for the fun.
And then somebody ended up getting a show and said, "Hey, you got this show, would you like to play it?"
And next thing you know, it's coming on 15 years.
So you know, this, like a lot of things, the greater things in life kind of find you.
We didn't try to put this together.
And it's because of that, I think, this has been from day one just a fun thing what we've made, and it's kinda taken us from western North Carolina to California.

- The original five guys, myself Buddy Melton, Tim Surrett on bass, Darren Nicholson, Marc Pruett and Caleb Smith.
And each of them bring a unique thing to the band, which I think gives us our unique sound.
Caleb is a great jazz player, loves jazz and also bluegrass; Marc Pruett's a Earl Scruggs style banjo player, played with Ricky Skaggs for years; Tim Surrett had a gospel background; Darren loves the traditional country music.
And so, because of all that, it kind of... We bring all those influences and it actually gives us a unique, I think, a unique sound.
