Growing up there, there were a lot of gangs.
You saw a lot of things that other kids wouldn't have been exposed to.
You translate that through dance.
I do a dance style called Popping.
You're flexing your muscles to the beat of the music.
- [Marthy] I carry on two styles.
One style is, uh, Breakdancing, or B-boying.
And my other style is Bay Area Turf Dancing.
B-boying, a thing I fell in love with 'cause of all the crazy moves.
You do those flashy moves, you get some girls.
(uptempo jazzy music) (all cheering) Turf dancing is originally is from Oakland, California.
It was used to resolve gang violence.
I got to keep it Bay Area because I love the Bay.
- [Alex] Renegade Rockers are a legendary Bay Area dance crew.
Renegades, we like to battle.
A dance battle is when two dancers go head to head.
(Uptempo hip hop music) - [Voiceover] There you go!
Okay, okay.
- [Voiceover] Yeah, baby!
- [Alex] The judges pick who comes out on top.
(uptempo hip hop music) - [Voiceover] Whoa, hey, hey.
- [Alex] Roxrite is an iconic Bay Area Renegade Rocker that Marthy and I really look up to.
- [Voiceover] Hey, whoa!
- [Alex] Watching Roxrite battle is a huge inspiration.
- [Voiceover] Whoa!
- [Voiceover] Marty and I are officially a part of Renegade Rockers and it's an honor.
- They are now official!
Renegade Rockers, y'all, now make some noise!
(cheering and applause) - [Voiceover] Returning champions, Renegade Rockers rolling all the way down from the Bay.
- [Marthy] If I'm in a battle, I'm always thinking quick.
You gotta think quick, like what's your next move.
You gotta make your next move, your best move.
Everybody understands how I'm feeling through the music and through my body.
(hip hop music with heavy bass) - [Voiceover] Let's go Ali!
- [Alex] Being a dancer, I don't have financial security, it's tough, and one of the things that made me realize that dancing was the thing for me was how free I felt every time I went and danced.
(upbeat hip hop music)
