Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[upbeat music] [upbeat music] - [Announcer] In 1904, Bayard Wootten, a working, divorced mom in New Bern, borrowed a camera and taught herself photography.
She was determined to use her artistic talents to support her family.
In the process, she would also make history.
She started a business creating postcards and taking portraits.
Soon, her striking photos of soldiers led to her becoming the first woman in the National Guard.
In 1914, she also became the first woman to take a picture from an airplane and in 1918 she bought her first car and traveled across the state photographing people in rural settings.
She became known for her sense of adventure, even hanging from a cliff to get the perfect shot of Linville Gorge.
Ultimately, she went on to take over 600,000 photographs.
But Bayard's most recognizable piece of art?
Her next door neighbor in New Bern, Caleb Bradham, needed a logo for his new soft drink.
So she designed the original Pepsi logo.
