It is time for my voyage to begin.
- Oh, Father, why must you go away on another dangerous voyage?
- In order to buy you pretty dresses, and trinkets, and cakes, my lovely daughter.
- But we would rather have you with us than dresses.
- Or trinkets.
- Or cakes.
- Must you go?
- Yes, I must go, my lovely girls.
- Here is a present for you, dear father.
A scarf to keep you as warm as the thoughts of your three daughters who embroidered it.
- Thank you, my dearest.
Thank you all.
Now, each of you kiss me and tell me what I can bring you as a present from faraway lands.
- I want only that you return to us, dearest father.
But if you must bring me a gift, fetch me a costly dress from the country of Bright Sun.
- I will bring you a dress so beautiful that it will brighten even a cloudy day.
- Oh, Father, if your voyage is fortunate, bring me a fan from the Land of the Dragons.
- I will find you a fan so delicate that it will dry your tears and bring a smile to your face when you are sad.
And what about you, my youngest child?
What will you have as your gift?
- The only gift I wish is your safe return.
- But I would like to bring you something, child.
- Well, if you must.
I have heard that somewhere there grows a most unusual rose.
That can be your gift to me.
- But how is that rose unusual, my daughter?
- Oh, you shall know it, Father, for it has three blossoms which grow from a single stem, and each of the flowers is a different color.
One yellow.
One red.
One pink.
(strong wind blows) - (gasps) Father!
- It is a bad omen.
- Father, you must not leave.
I feel that something terrible may happen.
- Do not worry.
Nothing will happen.
- No fan would dry our tears if anything happened to you.
- Do not cry, my children.
I promise to be very careful.
And now goodbye.
(thoughtful music) ♪♪ (adventurous music) (singing) ♪ Hoist a mighty sail.
♪ Higher bend your back.
♪ Heave ho with all your might.
♪ Your bones begin to crack.
♪ Oh we are lusty men.
♪ We love to sail the sea.
♪ Where the winds put us ashore ♪ That is where we’ll be.
(music continues) - Sir, our crew is restless.
They have been away from home for so many months.
- Yes, yes, Captain.
I know.
- We have sold our cargo at a handsome profit, and you have found beautiful gifts for your daughters.
Now that we have a good wind, let us raise our sails and return home.
- I do not have a gift for my youngest daughter.
I would give half my profits just to know where I might find her rose.
- So you seek The Three-Roses which grow from a single stem.

- I will pay any price for it.

- Do not promise now.
Do not promise that which you may regret later.
That flower cannot be paid for in gold.
- No matter.

Set sail immediately.
- Go at your own risk.

She grows flowers herself.
She wanted to have The Three-Rose.
She did not ask for expensive presents from my voyage, as did her older sisters.

Forgive her, sir, and let me take it to her.
- I have no power to grant The Three-Rose.
When you took the flower, you broke a magic spell.
Now you must pay the penalty.
- Oh, sir.
Take pity on me.
- The one for whom you picked the flower must leave your world and come here to live with me.
If she does not, you will die.
- My daughter?
You would take my most beloved daughter from me?
- The choice is yours.
For your daughter to come here, she has only to waive The Three-Rose thrice.
Or do you wish to die now?
- No.
Give me time.
Let me think about it.
- I am allowed to wait one month.
- But how shall I return home?
My ship.
- Your ship is safe in the harbor, waiting for you.
Remember, you must send your daughter, or return within one month.
(pleasant music) (girls singing) ♪ In the distance, a ship ♪ ♪ returning with someone who ♪ ♪ is very dear to our hearts.
