We'll see you in just a little bit.
Ben: I got this cello in 2005 on eBay.
Her name's Kay.
She was $150.
Well, I grew up in a very musical family.
My mom sang, dad was an R&B guitar player.
While they didn't pursue it professionally, it definitely influenced our home.
You know, there's R&B music on all the time.
You know, people were always humming to each other.
And my dad didn't force us to play instruments, but he made sure that we had to walk around them and over them all the time, and so I was just kind of swimming in it, I guess.
And then in 4th grade I picked up the cello in public schools.
That began sort of a long love affair with the versatility of the instrument, you know, 'cause I would study classical music at school and in private lessons, but then I would also play music with my friends, you know, jamming, playing bluegrass music and playing, you know, rock and roll blues.
Through long COVID I realized how much I needed to perform, and I realized that the stage and the interaction with the audience is a really incredible way to help people feel more connected, not only to the world, but to themselves.
'Cause I got a little disconnected from myself.
I couldn't smell, I couldn't taste, it was hard to think, and I really ended up healing through performing.
Being out on the road singing and playing music was the thing that kind of family caused my symptoms to reside.
So, I think about healing when I get on stage for myself and for the audience.
