The governor condemned the shooting and said we need to think about the political atmosphere in America today.
We have seen widespread condemnation.
And what we've got to see is that happening, not just when there is an act of violence, but when people's rhetoric could create violence.
You can't fan the flames and then condemn the fire.
So what I'd like to see is leaders on every side, condemning the type of speech that just goes too far.
That that suggests that that one group of people aren't American or don't deserve to be here or incites violence and in different ways.
I'd like to see us speak out against all of that.
Now, here in the Commonwealth, I also think that we don't have a lot of the tools that other states have to prevent.
Whether it's an act like this or certainly some of the school shootings that we've seen, and that's pretty simple.
It's a red flag law.
I think a red flag law allows law enforcement to go to the courts when they know somebody is about to commit murder, and hopefully stop it before it starts.
Congressman Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky's fourth district, says President Donald Trump is one of the people who needs to tone down his rhetoric after the Kirk shooting.
According to the Hill website, Massie pointed out that President Trump called it, quote, a hostile act for members of Congress to back a bill to release the Jeffrey Epstein files.
The governor ordered flags lowered to half staff at state buildings for the September 11th anniversary, and they will remain at half staff through Sunday.
Out of respect for Charlie Kirk, the Kentucky Democratic Party chair, Coleman Eldridge released the following statement condemning the Kirk shooting, quote, saying No American, Democrat or Republican should live in fear of becoming a target based on what they believe or how they vote.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie Kirk's family and with the students and staff impacted by the senseless events and quotes.
