Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipAs we told you yesterday, the United Auto Workers wants the Georgetown Toyota plant to go union.
The UAW is pushing for workers at more than a dozen auto plants to join the union.
The Georgetown plant with its 7000 workers plus is one of them.
Georgetown workers received a raise after the UAW strike ended against former General Motors and Stellantis.
Yesterday, a reporter asked Governor Andy Beshear about the union effort in Georgetown.
I am a pro-union governor here in Kentucky.
I'm grateful for UAW and what they've done to ensure that so many Kentucky families can put food on the table that have better benefits and better wages.
Toyota is also a very important employer here in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and they've recently made some really significant commitments that will ultimately be decided if it reaches a vote by the by the workers within the facility.
And they ought to have the right to make that decision.
That's how all of these go.
And I do want to compliment Toyota for having a very attractive wage and benefit package, but certainly know that the UAW is is out there committed to their members.
And their one goal is to try to create a better life for our auto workers.
Now, here's how this works.
According to The Courier Journal, when 30% of workers at a plant sign union cards, a committee of plant workers go public to say a plant is working toward unionizing.
When 70% have signed, a committee will demand union recognition from the company.
If the company doesn't recognize the union, the workers file with the National Labor Relations Board and workers at the plant vote on whether to join a union.
