(applause) My family's from Kentucky.
I was born there myself.
A lot of Southerners would leave the farms to go work in factories.
(guitar music) My folks did that.
(guitar music) We were still a Kentucky family, but living in northern Indiana.
or eventually Southern California.
(guitar music) The music that was played in the home was another big part of what kept us together, because we did travel a lot.
(guitar music) Five boys and yeah, we all played.
Our oldest brother, Denny was kind of the first one to get after it.
He was a really good, gifted guitar player, way beyond his years.
(guitar music) I couldn't imagine not playing with dad or my brothers for many years.
(guitar music) ♪ The title of the song, title of the song.
♪ ♪ When left... ♪ My own pursuits and interests started going, and it was kind of the beginning of my voice, so to speak, wanting to write and be musical like the singer songwriters of the 70s.
♪ Well, It's girl meets boy... ♪ We were all self-taught.

♪ It's all by ear, it's all by memory.
And that really started as a kid.
♪ ♪ ♪ I got rice cooking in the microwave.

♪ ♪ I don't plan to shave, and it's a goofy thing, ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ but I just gotta say, ♪ ♪ hey, man, I'm doing all right.

I've been a lot of places.
But music has kind of always been a part of whatever I've done.
In some small way.
As a recording artist, it sometimes stresses people out because they're like, well, we thought you were blues or we thought you were or roots or what is this?
And I just thought, I thought this song was funny.
And so I wrote it.
And I grew up in the 70s and vinyl was a part of our lives.
Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, but Whitney Houston, Ani DiFranco really sort of broke me out of this idea of what a woman had to be in music.

It just wasn't something I did as a profession.
It was just something I really loved.

I mean, they're just ready to have an experience.

Going from like, side to side and trying to engage everyone.

You feel that in a small venue, which is wonderful.
But on those big stages, you're attempting to make that same energy happen in an expanse that's way bigger.

(upbeat music) If you go see a singer songwriter and he's telling you stories, if you really dive in and allow that story to wash over you and have a moment, then you can grow from that.
If you're connecting to the song and it's soulful music and really feeling what you're saying, and it's going to get heavy and it could get you worked up.
That's the kind of performance I want to hear, personally.
