How'd you meet?
Just curious.
Because oftentimes, when you have groups, it's a husband-wife team or- - Yeah, a lot of times, yeah.
- Somehow there's that connection, but you guys write songs together.
- The true story is that there was a production of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch".
- Which is a punk rock musical.
- Right, I know it.
- That I directed here in Whitefish.
- Really?
- And she was hired, Susan was hired by the artistic director.
- From New York.
- And so- - For what?
- To play Yitzhak.
- Oh, cool.
- So when I met her, she was, you know, by the time we were in tech, she's- - I had the beard.
- She was wearing a beard.
So she was the bearded lady in my brain.
And then you would come back for, like- - I fell in love with Montana, so, any time they offered me a contract, I came back.
And we ended up doing some things together through them.
And I knew that he wrote songs, and he asked me to work on a song that he had written, and took me to a recording studio to just lay down vocals one day.
I mean, you used to ask me to record things all the time.
- Yeah.
- Sometimes you'd be like, "Come over for dinner, and let's record, just go sing this in my closet."
- Yeah, which was my vocal booth, you know, walk-in closet.
But I remember when you first laid down that official song in the recording studio, she sang the harmony, and I listened back and I thought, "Well, I need to re-sing my part now."
(laughs) This was my vocal part, and she kind of came in and did this, and I was like, "Ooh!"
- We always said that we'd write together, and then when we finally sat down to do it, it becomes just a hodgepodge of, "What do you wanna write about?"
A lot of it is just talking about the things that are important to us, and then just letting that kind of filter through an idea.
And one of us will come to the other one with an idea, or like a line or a chorus, or a chorus structure.
- Harmonies come later?
Harmony comes simultaneously?
I mean, are you actually working on the music in the air part, or are you doing this on paper?
- I think it's morphed over time.
I think when we first started, our first record was, "Here's a chorus, here's an idea, let's write on some established melody and, like, write around that," and so some of it already had... And then we'd build harmonies from there.
Our second record, it was a lot more because we were in separate spaces for a lot of it.
It was a lot more throwing.
Like, Nick would throw me a guitar lick, and then I'd sing on top of it.
- She would mumble sing half words, and one time, she sent me, like, a little voice memo back from her phone, and I wrote her back, I said, "Did you just accidentally or on purpose sing, 'If the dam broke, I'll be your boat'?
'Cause I'm keeping that."
And she just sang it.
So, I guess the answer is all of the above.
- Yes.
- Sometimes harmonies, when we don't have a song finished, we sort of know what a harmony could be.
- Yeah.
Sometimes they're already in block harmony when we start.
We pick a lot of our keys based on, yeah.
- A lot of arguments start that way.
- Yeah.
- "Can we please drop this down a half step?"
She says, "No."
(chuckles) - I pick a lot of our keys is what I'm saying.
- So I'm, like, up in the stratosphere on the high energy stuff, and I'm like... - But you can do it.
You have such a range.

- I'm City Lights.
- She lives in New York, I live in Montana, and so that was the genesis of it.
- Oh, we got way ahead of ourselves when we were doing all these cover songs in the pandemic, and we were just rapping back and forth, and we were like... We had always wanted to be a band together and do original music, and I think it was before we even wrote anything together.
- It was, we'd always joke, just 'cause we had such an interesting connection on what we liked.
Like, we loved David Bowie, but also loved Americana, and it's a weird hodgepodge of things that we both liked and found were our druthers, and we always joked that if we lived in the same place, we'd be in a band together.
It was like our running joke.
- And we weren't in the same place, we were just in the same moment in time.
- Yeah.
- And so we came up with, basically, what makes us, I think this is still true, is what makes us work, is how different we are as people, and the through line being our music is the thing that we kind of connect and have a cross section with.
So, Big Sky City Lights really has a lot more to do with what influences us musically, and also kind of where our home base is, where our origin is.
- One of the things that I enjoy about the music that you guys create is that the lyrics are intelligent, the music's intelligent.
There's a uniqueness to each thing that you've written.
That's a big achievement.
- Thank you.
- And I think that authenticity comes through, because you can tell you're not saying, "Oh, let's write something completely different."
- No.
- And it really just is emerging from you guys are fluid and in process individually, but also as a music group.
- Yeah, it is.
- And just such a love for music, I think.
You know, all sorts of different kinds of music.
- And discovering new things musically too, and lyrically, and just metaphorically, you know, what's the song about?
Okay, now, one story down, what's it about?
Okay, now, what's it really about, you know?
And that if we can achieve that... I mean, I hate talking in terms of, like, what someone listening to is going to get out of it, but just for personally, what we'd love to get out of it is it's nice when you can have something where, like, this is a song, it feels good to listen to, I'm getting a lot from it, but a couple stories down, it's that old trick of the theater, like, if you can entertain the person in the room who maybe doesn't have a whole lot of book smarts, but you can also stimulate the intellect of someone in the back row, you know, who just lost a relative, if you can hit all that at the same time, I mean, that's what we're trying to do, is communicate.
- Is it true, and can you feel it?
- Yeah.
- Because it doesn't really matter how clever you are if the chords aren't right and if you're not feeling what's underneath it, and that I'm very particular about.
- Yeah.
It matters.
And in this day and age, we're surrounded by music.
Music can become something that we're just using to sell something.
(chuckles) It's background to, like, keep you watching.
You know, if you ever wanna know the power of sound, turn the volume down on your TV during an advertisement.
It loses all of its power.

And yet when you get right down to the bones of who's doing it and what they're bringing, there's a lot more going on than meets the eye or the ear, you know?
And it's kind of fun for we musicians, for we people who work together, to find each other in real time.
- Oh.
yeah.
- With whatever's going on.
It was kind of fun for us knowing that you just had a baby, you know, six or seven weeks before the shoot, and here you are, you know, with us, and you're, you know, sort of dealing with new motherhood.
I mean, it added a certain sparkle, I guess, would be the way to put it.
It was really exciting for us.
- I even said at some point backstage with our band that we love- - They're so amazing.
- They're such a great, great group.
I told them we're just, you know, 'cause leading into it, they're like, "Susan just had a baby, we're still gonna do this '11th & Grant' thing?"
I'm like, "Yeah, she's still down to do it."
And then, you know, we did it, and I told a couple of the guys and just, like, you know, she's crushing it.
I'm like, I swore I would never be in an original band with anyone again.
I'm like, "That's why I'm in a band with her."
'Cause she just shows up.
- Yeah, and the thing I loved about the band is that there's not a dig me person in the group.
And they just bring exactly what's needed.
No more, no less.
They're as poetic in what they do playing as the music itself.
- Incredibly sensitive.
- There's a keyboard player, a bass player, a drummer, and a guitarist.
None of them are just a guitarist.
They're all musicians.
- Yep.
- All of them.
Listen, they're so sensitive, so good.
I mean, I just, like, pinch myself, we have our dream team, you know?
- Yeah, that's absolutely true.
I have the ability to really hone in on the brushstrokes.
So, the beauty of live performance and something I've always liked about live performing is you can't, and so you just have to go for it, and you can just have... Just having the sensitivity and the magic of what's happening in the room is the only thing that you really have to buoy anything off of.
So, that magical energy that comes with live performing, it's what has always drawn me to music.
