IT IS HIS FIRST DAY VOLUNTEERING AND AT THIS RATE, IT WON'T BE HIS LAST.
>> MAYBE I COULD USE SOME HELP AND THEY SAID YOU BET YOU.
I SPOKE TO HIM ON SATURDAY AND I CAME IN FOR MY FIRST DAY TODAY.
I'M REALLY GLAD TO BE HERE HELPING.
>> LIKE SO MANY OF US, HE REMEMBERS HIS FIRST SET OF WHEELS.
>> IT WAS A SMALL RED BIKE WITH TRAINING WHEELS AND MY FATHER WOULD PUT ME AT THE TOP OF THE HILL AND RUN DOWN ALONG BESIDE ME AS I WAS GOING DOWN.
I REMEMBER THE FIRST DAY I GOT MY TRAINING WHEELS OFF AND HOW MANY TIMES I CRASHED.
BUT IT WAS SO MUCH FUN AND KIDS REMEMBER THEIR FIRST BIKE.
AND I CAN REMEMBER THE BIKES I HAD AS I GREW UP AND MATURED AND GREW BIGGER AND BIGGER.
IT'S JUST A LOT OF FUN.
>> WHEN HE SAW AN ARTICLE IN THE LOCAL PAPER THAT THE CHARITY NEEDED HELP REFURBISHING OLD BICYCLES INTO NEW ONES SO THEY COULD BE GIVEN TO AREA CHILDREN FOR THE HOLIDAYS, HE JUMPED IN TO HELP.
>> THEY WERE TRYING TO GET ABOUT 30 BIKES ARE SO READY FOR CHRISTMAS.
FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
SO I FELT LIKE THERE WERE A LOT OF DAYS BETWEEN NOW AND THE TIME THEY WOULD NEED TO BE THERE AND THEY ARE WORKING HARD TO GET A BUNCH OF BIKES FOR KIDS THAT MIGHT NOT GET ONE OTHERWISE.
>> THE CREW INSIDE BETHLEHEM PENNSYLVANIA'S COALITION FOR APPROPRIATE TRANSPORTATION HAS BEEN BUSY PERFORMING BIKE SURGERY AND REHABILITATION ON DOZENS OF PETALS, WHEELS AND HANDLEBARS AND GIVING THEM AWAY FOR FREE TO AREA FAMILIES.
THEY ARE TAKING UP TO 52, TWO WHEELERS AND ARE PUTTING IN 3 TO 5 HOURS AND TEACH BIKE TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE STURDY.
>> WE GREASE THE AXLES IF NECESSARY.
CHECK THE CRANK.
IF NECESSARY WE GREASE AND WE CLEAN IT AND WE CHECK THE TIRES.
WE GREASE THE HANDLEBAR AND SEAT AND STEM SO THAT THE KID THAT IS GOING TO GET IT IS SAFE AND THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.
>> IT IS A NEW INITIATIVE THE LOCAL CHARITY IS ROLLING OUT FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON.
PARENTS ARE WELCOME TO STOP BY AND PICK OUT A BICYCLE FOR THEIR CHILD AND LEARN ABOUT THE MECHANICS THAT KEEP THE WHEELS TURNING.
>> THAT IS WHAT I LIKE TO DO, HELP PEOPLE IN NEED.
IT MAKES ME FEEL SO GOOD, MORE THAN HAPPY.
WHEN YOU SEE THE KIDS FACE WHEN YOU GIVE HIM OR HER A BIKE, MY HEART IS THIS BIG.
>> THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SAYS IT IS ABOUT GIVING BACK AND A BIKE IS THE BEST GIFT FOR CHILDREN AND THOSE IN NEED.
TO HIM A SIMPLE VEHICLE MEAN SO MUCH MORE TO A CHILD.
>> FOR THEM IT IS FREEDOM, EXERCISE, MOBILITY.
CHANCES TO CONNECT TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND MAYBE WHAT IS A LITTLE BIT FURTHER THAN WALKING DISTANCE.
>> PEOPLE WILL COME AND DONATE THEIR OLD BIKES WHEN THEY GET A NEW BIKE OR IF FOR ANY REASON THEY HAVE A BIKE THEY WANT TO DONATE AND THEY WANT TO SEE GET USED.
THEY WANT TO SEE SOMEONE RIDE IT AGAIN AND BRING LIFE BACK TO THE BIKE WHICH IN TERMS BRINGS LIFE BACK INTO THE PERSON THAT WANTS TO RIDE IT.
>> THE OTHER DAY WE SPOKE TO THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB TO GIVE US THE NAMES OF THE KIDS, THE HEIGHT OF THE KIDS SO WE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT BIKE TO TAKE TO THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB.
WE ARE NOT JUST TAKING A BUNCH OF BIKE IS AND MAYBE ONE WOULD FIT SOMEBODY.
WE ARE REALLY TRYING TO DO OUR BEST.
>> THOSE INTERESTED IN LENDING A HELPING HAND CAN DONATE THEIR OLDER USE BICYCLES OR VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME.
DROP-IN WORKSHOP HOURS ARE THURSDAYS NOON UNTIL FOUR CLOCK P.M.
AND SATURDAYS 11:00 A.M.
UNTIL 3:00 P.M.
>> WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR ANY MONEY FOR THE BIKES BUT ARE HELPING PEOPLE TO RIDE WHO MIGHT NOT OTHERWISE GET ONE.
WE WANT THEM TO RIDE SAFELY AND SMART AND TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THE BIKE AND WE WELCOME FAMILIES AND PARENTS TO COME IN AND PICK OUT A BIKE FOR THEIR CHILD.
