This is amazing - [Vince] BJ the Chicago kid on the Sandia Tram.
Here we go.
(tranquil music) - This is a song myself and Charlie wrote, in Memphis, a simple song.
It reminds me of old songs.
Is it all right if I sing a little bit for y'all today?
- [Vince] Yes sir.
- [Ken] Yes please.
- That's what's up.
It says this.
Hills Are not mountains, yeah And problems don't last forever But if we, yeah Just hold on I know that we'll We'll be all right - I'ma sing it one more time.
- [Ken] How's the view?
- That's crazy.
I've been singing since I was a kid in church.
just my whole life.
- What spoke to you when you were a kid?
- I don't know.
As a kid I was always like, I always understood music far more mature than my age.
"Can you stand the Rain," New Edition, "As We Lay," Shirley Murdoch.
Anything Marvin Gaye, anything Stevie Wonder.
I always understood it far more than I was able to experience the real feeling as an adult.
I was always moved by the right lyrics, on the right chords with the right beat.
It always met the right ears.
(studio audience applauding) I'm gonna put on my glasses because we about to have some fun now.
This that pretty brown, brown, driving me wild Can we just smooth it out a little bit?

Make some noise for the band if you love what you're hearing one time.
(audience cheering) Born and raised on the south side of Chicago.
He did.
The youngest boy of three.
Three men now.
Both parents in the home.
Being raised on the south side of Chicago was never easy.
Always competitive.
Always trying to stay safe, always trying to keep your head above waters.
Always trying to see something bigger than what you see every day.
So me being here in front of you guys is just a blessing y'all.
It's purely a blessing.
It's purely a blessing.
Doing what I love.
(audience applauding) I love to play more of my music is that all right?

They taught me to pay attention to the details, how to perform at my maximum.
And one day I got a call to sing background for Usher during the "Confessions" album right?
(audience whooping) That's what I said.
(audience laughing) I was like, "Woo."
(audience chuckling) I got the job.
(audience clapping) Life should begin to bloom for me outside of this.
If we knew the journey, do you think we would act the same?
Hell no.
It's important we don't know, to start, to say yes.
It's probably one of the most beautiful things you can do.
(audience applauding) You dig that?
So he's about to turn y'all up a little bit.
Is that all right?
(audience cheering) Let's do it.
Y'all having a good time tonight so far?
(audience cheering) Say yeah one more time.
- [Audience] Yeah.
- Well guess what?
Listen.
Baby keep on turnin' me up Turnin' me up Turnin' me up, babe Turnin' me up I said baby keep on turnin' me up Keep on turnin' me up baby It's just the little, bitty things you do That keeps on turnin' me up (turnin' me up) Yeah, yeah (turnin' me up) Keep doing that thing you're doing to me Doing to me, sugar That sweet lil' thing you're doing to me Yeah, yeah, yeah (yeah, yeah, yeah) It's just the little, bitty things you do That keeps on turnin' me up (turnin' me up) Yeah, listen Sometimes it makes me wanna say ooh Oh-ooh, oh Ooh Sometimes it makes me wanna say yeah Yeah yeah yeah yeah Yeah, yeah, oh whoa Yeah, come on Baby keep on t-t-t-t-t-turnin' me on (turnin' me on) I said baby keep on turnin' me on (turnin' me on) Keep on turnin' me on, babe (turnin' me on) It's just the little, little bitty things you do That keeps on turnin' me on (turnin' me on) Yeah, music take me away It's kind of nostalgic huh?

- One more time, just say it.
Don't stop, don't stop, doing it BJ - [Audience] Don't stop, don't stop.
It's just the little, little bitty things you do (audience cheering) (BJ screaming) (group laughing) - Finally look behind me like... (BJ screaming) (group laughing) - [BJ] Your nerves, your nerves, Ah!
- [Ken] We made it!
(laughs) - Probably just needed to sing a song the whole way.
So your brain doesn't think about it.
Steve you all right back there?
(group laughing) (acoustic guitar music) Sometimes it's that gift for me, it s that gift that um, you forget the power of it when you're just trying to be a regular human.
When the cape is under the bed, and you know what I'm saying?
Washing the superhero boots.
If we, yeah Just hold on But when you get back to remembering what the cape feels like, or the power that comes with the cape, it's magical.
I think that's what makes it so beautiful.
You put out the music, you give it wings to fly as far as it it wants, but you never know how many times or how many different places it lands or drop seeds on whoever.
And I think that's what got me here with you today.
You know what I'm saying?
So this is pretty cool.
This is my first time here in New Mexico.
- Dude, I'm so honored that you're here man.
- And music has brought us here.
So I think that kind of explains how it kind of goes full circle.
That's beautiful.
Just hold on I know that we'll, will be All right Take that with you.
May it bless you.
Peace.
(spectators applauding) (audience cheering) (audience clapping) It s alright to make some noise out here one time.
Heaven knows Every turn and every single road And Heaven shows Every time you're shining bright from your soul 'Cause there ain't no way out but we stay out Waiting for the payout Fighting for the ones, who ain't got no way out But we stay out Waiting for the payout Put your hands in the air Come on help me sing it yeah Hey young world yeah, come on I don't know where we going I just know we're going somewhere Somewhere far worth going Ask me what we're searching for For something that's golden, yeah And we want it so, so bad, hey Willing to put my soul in Sometimes you fly so high But still we keep on going Sometimes forget the reasons why (why why why) But we always know where 'Cause there ain't no way out but we stay out Guess what?
Waiting for the payout We always fighting for the one Who ain't got no way out But we stay out Waiting for the payout Put your hands in the air Come on help us sing it Hey young world Say I don't know where we going No , no, no I just know we're going somewhere Hey, somewhere far worth going Yeah yeah yeah What we're, searching for, yeah For something that's golden, yeah, yeah And we want it so bad, yeah yeah Willing to put our soul in Break it down for me, man This song is written for, any and everybody who's never been afraid to be alone for five minutes to be understood forever.
(audience cheering) Lowkey I feel like some people really don't understand what that means.
Understand this.
You can do whatever you put your mind to.
Just don't wait.
Anybody got somebody that they lost, that's very valuable to 'em?
You still feel they spirit?
You still feel like they with you?
You live for them?
Even when you make mistakes, you think of them to be better next time?
Anybody have something that they really, somebody they really love that they lost that's not here with us, but they're still now here on a more spiritual level make some noise, one time.
(audience cheering) Just like you, I have quite a few We all have quite a few.
I think a beautiful way of letting their names ring again like bells is if I count to three.
And you don't feel ashamed.
You don't feel embarrassed.
Shout their name to the top of your lungs.
One, two, three.
(audience shouting names) One, two, three.
(audience shouting names) One, two, three.
(audience shouting names) I don't like going here a lot, 'cause I get to think about it, so many different faces, so many different lives that, has impacted my life in so many simple ways to them, but big to me, you know?
Some people, people turn their backs on but they still find love to show me in some kind of way.
So it's hard for me to turn my back to love, you know?
Genuine love.
So that's one thing I pray for this world, in us having our differences.
Just pure love, man.
Y'all agree with that?
(audience cheering) But I love to say this on camera There's so many beautiful faces in this room, so many different races in this room, so many different ethnicities in this room that came to hear one thing, beautiful music.
(audience cheering) Yeah.
Hey young world I don't know where we going I just know we're going somewhere Somewhere far worth going Ask me what we're searching for For something that's golden And we want it so bad Willing to put my soul in (audience cheering) Thank you y'all, my name's BJ the Chicago Kid I love y'all, thank you for this time.
(audience cheering) The evolution of music is, I think it's pretty rad.
I think it's pretty cool.
It recycles itself in the most beautiful ways.
I think it's just only up to us to kinda, do the homework and share the knowledge of how amazing it is because, they aren't just words on the paper They aren't just words in the song.
They aren't just chords.
All of this is about something that reminded us of a feeling that we couldn't let go, and we wanna give it another life so somebody can feel that too.
That's what this whole thing is about.
- That's what is man.
- That's what this whole thing is about.
(rock music) I hope you think about it Hope you think about me When I'm walking in your sleep Think about it Think about me Hope you think about it Hope you think about me I'm still walking in your sleep Hope you think about it Hope you think about me
