The CDC defines autism as a developmental disability that can cause a wide range of challenges in social interaction, communication, and behavior. It affects about 1 in 44 children. Therapists say early intervention is key to treating autism, and Black children are five times more likely to be misdiagnosed or diagnosed later in life.
