Black Joe Lewis is an American blues, funk and soul artist influenced by Howl’n Wolf and James Brown. He formed Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears in Austin, Texas, in 2007. In March 2009, Esquire listed Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears as one of the "Ten Bands Set to Break Out at 2009's SXSW Festival”. He has since gone on to tour the world.

It's good to be back here in Albuquerque.

This is Joe.
He is joining us from Austin.
- Nice to meet you.
- Pleasure to meet you sir.
We're one of the few in the world that are still hand building.
Here, everything is all hand built.
- What kind of wood is this?
- That's Honduras mahogany.
- Joe, you only playing mahogany, right?
(laughing) - Yeah.
- So yeah, yeah, yeah, there you go.
- Just mahogany, so yeah, we're good.
We're good.
- We're great.
You wanna try a guitar?
- [Joe] Yeah (Joe playing acoustic guitar) - You know, like when I was younger and I first started this there was a lot of stuff that I was afraid to challenge just because I'd never been in that position before.
- Right.
- And I didn't know what was going on, you know, and I was- - Yeah.
- You know, I'm making money and gigging, you know, so it's, you know, you don't wanna rock the boat.
I heard you the first time You gon' tell it again You thought I let it slide But I don't think I can again - Most of my stuff's just about, you know, especially like my newer stuff, it's all kind of personal, you know, trying to keep it real, you know I've had some crazy stuff happening.
I had one dude tell me that like, I had a year left to sustain as a band.
You need to mind your own business So I was like, well what am I paying you for then?
So I fired him.
- Yeah.
You always gotta remember why you started doing it.
I like to do it.
That's why I started, that's why I keep doing it, you know?
Something's just been wrong Yes it did Yeah Ever stop to think What was going on your own home I bet you didn't 'Cause I been robusted And disgusted And this moment sounded like (audience cheers and applauds) - Y'all got Renee all fired up.
He was scared of the cameras and s***.
He probably gonna get mad at me for saying that.
But, y'all got him fired up.

- Yeah, boy's one and the girl's four.

- You know, it's tough 'cause you miss a lot of time just being on the road.
I used to go out, like do like six, eight weeks at a time and now I just kind of keep it like two or three weeks at a time.
Dude, I like the girl 'cause my son just breaks all my s***.
- I know, that's what I heard I'm in store for.
My girl's a little sweetheart.

- Tucson.

- That's where my parents met there in high school back in the day.

I like the desert.

New Mexico might be like my favorite state now.
