Riding a bike is a fun outdoor activity that not only gets children moving, but also provides important social opportunities and even independence.

However, this simple activity is often out of reach for children with disabilities.

But one nonprofit is making sure kids get the fun and mobility that comes with the right set of wheels.

Our Mackenzie Spink brings us this story as we come to the end of Disability Pride Month.

Holly lifesavers began caring for Liam when he was four months old, and later adopted him by age four.

Liam was diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, a condition that can affect cognitive and physical development.

This year at a school event, he was able to ride an Amtrak for the first time.

So Liam has really low muscle tone because of the fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

I never understood why he couldn't sit and ride a bike until I saw the pictures from the bike week at his school and where he had the chair, and he was able to sit in the seat, and he didn't have to hold his trunk up.

The look on his face, just because he was able to actually get on a bike and ride a bike was just amazing.

It was just so that was when I immediately reached out to Coach Gai to ask her how we could get one of these bikes.

Holly was put in touch with bluegrass and bikes, and after a consultation with his physical therapist, an order was put in for Liam's trike.

The adaptive bicycles come from the National and Bucs organization and are stored at Brooke Spoke, a community bike shop that partners with the Bluegrass Chapter.

They saw, and for us, until we have a monthly bike build, we're all volunteers.

We have all different levels.

Some people are great at unloading a box.

Other kids know how to adjust the brakes.

So we take volunteers with all types of skills.

Each metric is different.

The type of bike a child receives is determined by their needs and information from their physical therapist.

After the bike is assembled, it's then tailored further to its new owner.

So for kids that just need a little bit more confidence being able to ride a bike but don't have a lot of physical disabilities, just having that three wheels to give them more stability.

Other kids need to have their feet strapped in so they'll stay on their bike and then all the way up to kids that need, you know, like trunk support, a harness type, different types of handlebars.

There's there's all types of adaptations.

At last month's Duck Derby fundraiser in Lexington, Liam received his personalized Amtrak.

It felt like I've got.

And what do you like about having it?

The wired three wheels, the, the the dog whistle, I do, I don't like the balance.

Riding a bike isn't just a great way to have fun outdoors.

The adaptive bikes also train important muscles and build new skills.

The bikes are recommended by physical therapists or occupational therapist.

And I say the physical therapist are excited about the motor skills that the child may gain.

They're gaining strength, coordination.

And then as an occupational therapist, you're seeing that, you know, socialization and just the recreational fun of it.

And a child is gaining strength and coordination, but not realizing that they're working really hard on those goals.

Because who doesn't like to bike?

Holly says Liam's amtrack allows him to keep up with his friends in a new way.

See, Liam get to do something that he's always wanted to do and he couldn't.

It was for him.

It was heartwarming.

And then to see him, watch it, watch him share it with his friends.

Just something that he's able to do now that typical kids have always been able to do that he couldn't.

It was just.

Just makes a mama's heart smile.
