(crowd applauding/cheering) (guitar plucking) - So, I feel right at home here in Southern California, I have to say.
My brother has actually lived out here since 2002.
So, we do a lot of family vacations.
This past Thanksgiving, I spent a whole week out here in Southern California.
So, I'm familiar with the beauty and a little bit with the traffic!
(crowd chuckles) Although Nashville's getting bad; you guys would probably make fun of me for saying that!
So, I think my brother's here tonight.
Where are you, Alex?
He's somewhere in that sea of beautiful faces.
He and I grew up with a border collie, a Scottish border collie.
Her name was Cantie, and that means "cheerful" in Scottish.
So, I named her that.
Of course, she ended up being completely OCD and not cheerful!
(crowd laughs) I loved her, of course.
But, when I wrote a guitar tune recently that sounded like a Scottish reel and it sounded cheerful to me, I decided to name it after her.
Here it is: "Cantie Reel."

It's been on the books to return to Southern California.

And, before that, we did Summergrass San Diego.
So, I feel right at home here, because my brother has lived here in Southern California since 2002.
We come here for holidays.
We were here for a week at Thanksgiving.
And, what I'm excited about is just connecting with the Californians in the crowd.
Californians are a whole different breed of person.
They're wonderfully diverse.
They're very smart.
They're very polished.
They're refined.
They like to have fun.
They're not judgy.
And, we're excited to connect with our brand of bluegrass with Southern Californians tonight.
Just have a good time!
(crowd applauding) - [Rebecca] So, over here on the fiddle, we have a gal that I have been wanting to play with for years.
I first asked her 10 years ago if she could play concerts with me, and she was too busy.

A lot of good stuff like Led Zeppelin and James Taylor.
My dad really loved Simon and Garfunkel.
So, he and I were harmonizing when I was a little kid.
And, also I went to a summer camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where we learned a lot of traditional music, and I got to be the song leader.

And, our parents would take us to places like Venezuela and Iceland, and we'd say, "Can we go to the Eastern Shore?"
And, they'd be like, "No."
(crowd laughs) It was 20 miles across the bay.
To get there, you had to go across the bridge.
But, still-!
My mom was a travel agent, so she was able to bring us on a lot of adventures.
And, the Eastern Shore just didn't seem exciting enough to her.
Now for me, I had read "Misty of Chincoteague" as a kid, and in my brain it was still-- (audience claps/cheers) Wow, "Misty of Chincoteague" fans!
Alright!
In my brain, there were still wild horses over there.
It was just vacant, except for those wild horses, who'd come over with the Spaniards back in the, you know, late 1500s.
And, I took a trip there to make the video for this tune, and quickly found out, no, there's condos and gas stations just like everywhere else!
And, it's a huge disappointment.
But, this is my imagination.
Just a wild and free guitar tune called the "Virginia Coastline."
And, there is that video on YouTube if you'd like to see what my imagination is.
'Cause we faked it by going to a national park and finding some wild horses!
