IT JUST PROVES THERE ARE ALMOST NO SPACES EXCLUSIVELY FOR TWEEN’S ANYMORE.
WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, WE HAD SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS, HOME KIDS TV BLOCKS, NICKELODEON, YOU NAME IT.
YOU COULD PLOP DOWN WITH A BIG BALL OF CEREAL BIG ENOUGH TO TAKE OUT A GROWN MAN AND FOR FIVE HOURS STRAIGHT, YOUR BIGGEST PROBLEM WAS WHETHER THE VILLAIN WOULD CRASH OUT LONG ENOUGH FOR THE HEROES TO ESCAPE.
BUT NOW, THOSE PROGRAMMING BLOCKS WENT IN THE WAY OF DINOSAURS AND CABLE TV ITSELF.
KIDS ARE GROWING UP IN THE INTERNET AGE WHERE THE ALGORITHM DOESN’T CARE THAT THEY ARE 7, 10, OR 12 SO LONG AS THEY ARE STILL WATCHING.
IT’S HARDER FOR PARENTS TO MONITOR AND HONESTLY, IT’S HARDER FOR KIDS TO FIND SPACES THAT ARE MEANT FOR THEM.
THEY ARE WANDERING AROUND THESE DIGITAL STREETS WITH NO LIGHTS OR CROSSING GUARDS AND THAT BRINGS US TO PUBLIC MEDIA WHICH FOR GENERATIONS HAS BEEN THE SAFE HARBOR FOR KIDS CONTENT AND YES, WE ARE BIASED, BUT WITH GOOD REASON.
FROM CURIOUS GEORGE TO SESAME STREET, MR.
ROGERS TO WORK IT OUT WOMBATS, PUBLIC MEDIA OFFERED AGE-APPROPRIATE CONTENT WITHOUT TRYING TO SELL YOU A SLIME KIT OR FAST FASHION AFTERWARD BUT WITH THE RECENT DEFUNDING OF PUBLIC MEDIA, THE ONES WHO SUFFER THE MOST ARDENT EXECUTIVES OR PRODUCERS.
THEY ARE CAN SEND IN MANY COMMUNITIES, EDUCATIONAL MEDIA IS MORE THAN ENTERTAINMENT.
IT IS ENRICHMENT.
IT’S A REPRESENTATION.

THERE DEFINITELY SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN LIKE A SHIFT IN THE ANIMATION SPACE WHERE IT’S LIKE THEY HAVE GONE REALLY KID, LIKE REALLY YOUNG WERE REALLY ADULT AND CRASS SO I THINK THAT HAS LEFT A HUNGER FOR YOUNG ADULT, JUST DIFFERENT TYPES OF STORIES IN THE ANIMATION AND I THINK IN THE ADULT SPACE, WE ARE SETTING TO SEE A LITTLE BIT MORE EXPERIMENTATION THERE WITH THE TYPES OF STORIES BUT IN TERMS OF LIKE THE AVATAR, THE LAST AIR BENDER, HARRY POTTER AGE GROUP, I FEEL LIKE THEY ARE KIND OF STARVING.
THEY KEEP GOING BACK TO THE NOSTALGIA OF IT.

I THINK THERE’S OTHER ALTERNATIVES FOR MEDIA CONSUMPTION THAT MIGHT BE A LITTLE MAYBE NOT THE BEST.
EVERYTHING IN MODERATION.
AND THEN I THINK THAT THEY HAVE REALLY GO BACK AND REDISCOVER THE STUFF THAT WE ARE WATCHING.
I THINK OF A SHOW LIKE THE BOONDOCKS WHERE IT’S LIKE EVERY COUPLE YEARS, THERE IS LIKE A NEW GENERATION OF YOUNG KIDS EXPERIENCING THAT SHOW FOR THE FIRST TIME SO TO SEE HOW STUFF LIKE THAT STILL RESONATES ALL THESE YEARS LATER, I THINK IT’S DEFINITELY -- WITH MANY OPTIONS.
IT’S EITHER I GOT TO LOOK AT WHAT’S ALREADY BEEN MADE OR GO TO THESE OTHER PLATFORMS.

I THINK THAT A LOT OF THE STREAMING SHOWS ATTEMPT TO DO IT.
IT’S JUST HARD WHEN YOU ONLY GET A SEASON OR TWO OF THE SHOW AND IT GETS CANCELED.
SO THERE MIGHT BE THESE SWINGS THAT ARE TRYING TO HIT THAT AGE RANGE BUT I THINK OF A MOVIE LIKE KPOP DEMON HUNTERS THAT I THINK KIND OF LIKE REALLY IS TRYING TO FILL THAT SPACE AND I HOPE IT SHOWS THAT PEOPLE WANT THAT TYPE OF GENRE OF STORYTELLING.
NOT SUPER PRESCHOOL BUT FUN STUFF.
I FEEL LIKE WE GREW UP WITH A LOT MORE KIND OF LIKE JUST THAT OPTION OF STORYTELLING AVAILABLE.

IS THE INDUSTRY PRIORITIZING CERTAIN TYPES OF TARGET -- TARGETED AT YOUTH MORE THAN OTHERS?
LIKE IT SNUCK UP ON PEOPLE AS A PRIMARY SOURCE OF ENTERTAINMENT.
WHAT DO WE DO WITH THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT IS NOW KIND OF CHALLENGING FOR OUR AUDIENCE?
A LOT OF COMPANIES HAVE SAID WE HAVE THIS BIG IP.
LET’S LEAN REALLY HARD INTO IT.
HOLLYWOOD IS A BUSINESS SO YOU DO HAVE TO MAKE MONEY SO YOU WOULD HOPE THAT IP IS ABLE TO FIND MORE ORIGINAL PROJECTS AND THAT’S HOW WE GET SHOWS LIKE ADVENTURE TIME AND REGULAR SHOW.
THOSE SHOWS KIND OF CAME OUT OF A SLUMP, KIND OF NOT HAVING THAT KIND OF PG KIND OF TONGUE-IN-CHEEK, YOU KNOW, JUST WHAT KIDS FIND FUN AND FUNNY AND IT WAS HUGE.
I THINK NOW, IT WAS STILL KIND OF MORE OR LESS THE SAME WHERE INSTEAD OF YOUTUBE, IT WAS STREAMING.
PEOPLE JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO REACH THESE KIDS IN THE WAY THAT CONSUMPTION HAS CHANGED AS WELL.
I GREW UP WITH CABLE SO WE HAD THREE MAIN KIDS CHANNELS AND SOME PUBLIC CHANNELS HERE OR THERE BUT NOWADAYS, THERE’S SO MANY OTHER PLACES FOR KIDS TO GO TO BE ENTERTAINED.
HOW DO YOU KIND OF CORRAL AND CURATE A GOOD CHANNEL OR FEED IN 2026?

>> HOW DO YOU KEEP IT FROM NOT CATCHING DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONTENT THAT MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR KIDS?
WE HEAR ROOTED HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THE PIPELINE.
ESSENTIALLY, I SHOULD SAY, YOU MIGHT BE WATCHING SOMETHING THAT IS REALLY KID FRIENDLY ON YOUTUBE AS A CHILD AND THEN SUDDENLY, YOU ARE ON A PAGE WHERE YOU GOT A AN INFLUENCER -- YOU HAVE GOT AN INFLUENCER DOING ALL KINDS OF TRENDS IN YOUR GETTING CAUGHT UP IN THIS ALGORITHM THAT IS QUESTIONABLE.
QUICKSAND I THINK IT CAN BE QUESTIONABLE AND DANGEROUS.
I THINK KIDS AND YOUNG PEOPLE AND EVEN ADULTS IN GENERAL, WE ARE WHAT WE CONSUME SO IF YOU’RE SPENDING A TON OF TIME, YOU KNOW, ON THE INTERNET, YOU KNOW, DOING SCROLLING, CLICKBAIT’S, ALL THAT STUFF IS DEFINITELY THERE.
IT CAN AFFECT NOT JUST YOUR MOOD BUT ALSO PHYSICALLY.
NOT A GOOD THING.
I THINK THAT MINDFUL PROGRAMMING IS NEEDED FOR ME AND I THINK THAT’S WHAT MAKES WHAT I DO EVEN MORE IMPORTANT NOW.
TRY TO BE AUTHENTIC AND GENUINE AND YOU DON’T WANT TO JUST ENTERTAIN AND CAN YOU MAKE SOMETHING THAT MAKES PEOPLE FEEL GOOD AND LAUGH AND BRING JOY TO THE WORLD BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH OF THE OPPOSITE OUT THERE?

THERE’S DEFINITELY NOT ENOUGH WHEN I WAS GROWING UP SO I NOTICED IN TRYING TO REALLY CREATE SPECIFICALLY FOR THOSE KIDS WHO DON’T GET TO SEE THEMSELVES ANIMATED IN THESE STORIES AND IN THESE BEAUTIFUL, THOUGHTFUL, GENUINE, AUTHENTIC WAYS THAT, YOU KNOW, I’M THINKING OF LIKE MY FRIENDS, MY FAMILY FROM THE MIDWEST, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO CAPTURE THAT ESSENCE IN ANIMATION.
I THINK THAT’S HOW YOU CREATE MEMORABLE STORIES, ANIMATING MEMORABLE CHARACTERS AND DESIGNING FROM YOUR BACKGROUND, YOUR AUTHENTICITY, AND YOU KNOW, REALLY TRYING TO DO IT THROUGH A THOUGHTFUL, LOVING, APPEALING LENS.
PARIS: THAT’S BEAUTIFUL.
THERE ARE SOME CHALLENGES TO THAT TODAY, NOT THE LEAST OF WHICH IS AI, RIGHT?
AND THE ABILITY FOR MACHINES TO BE CREATING THINGS INSTEAD OF HUMANS.

I GREW UP AND I WATCHED THE ANIMATION INDUSTRY SHIFT FROM 2D HAND-DRAWN FILMS TO PRIMARILY 3D FILMS.
AND YOU KNOW, I KIND OF LOOKED TO THAT FOR GUIDANCE IN TERMS OF THIS WHERE YOU KNOW, THERE IS -- IN TERMS OF BEING ABLE TO I GUESS YOU PREPRODUCTION OR PLANNING, YOU KNOW, I HAVE ENCOUNTERED PROJECTS THAT ARE IN DEVELOPMENT WHERE THEY HAVE USED AI AND JUST PUT TOGETHER LIKE A 10 SECOND CLIP OR WHATEVER AND YOU KNOW, I THINK INTERNALLY, YOU KNOW, IT HELPS SELL THE IDEA BUT IT’S NOT NECESSARILY SOMETHING I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU PULL IT OUT FORWARD FACING TO AN AUDIENCE.
I THINK THE ANTIDOTE TO THAT IS THE AUTHENTICITY I WAS SPEAKING ABOUT EARLIER THAT I HAVE REALLY LET PEOPLE IN ON MY CREATIVE PROCESS TO SEE WHAT IT IS LIKE ACTUALLY MAKING A CARTOON.
AND ON AND MEDIATING AND I AM SHARING MY SCREEN AND THEY ARE GETTING A CHANCE TO SEE ME DRAW AND SEE UNDER THE HOOD SO THAT WAY THEY CAN UNDERSTAND THE ARTFORM TO MAKE SPECIFIC CHANGES QUICKLY.

OR THAT INTERESTING THING IS BECAUSE THERE’S NOT A LOT OF US IN HIGHER POSITIONS AND SO BECAUSE WE ARE IN A POSITION TO HELP OTHERS, THAT IS WHAT WE DID AND WE HAVE -- WE HAD A DIRECTOR -- WE HAVE AN EPISODE DIRECTOR.
I WAS LIKE HE SHOULD BE BLACK OR SHE SHOULD BE BLACK.
HOPEFULLY, WE CAN FIND SOMEONE BLACK.
WE FOUND SOMEONE BUT THEY DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE BECAUSE OF JUST THE WAY THE INDUSTRY IS BUT YOU CAN’T JUST HIRE SOMEBODY WITHOUT EXPERIENCE AND BE LIKE THAT’S ENOUGH.
YOU NEED TO SUPPORT THEM AND SET THEM UP FOR SUCCESS.
YOU CAN’T JUST -- WE HIRED SOMEBODY.
SO WE HAVE TWO DIRECTORS NOW SO WE FOUND SOMEONE WITH MORE EXPERIENCE WHO WAS LIKE, YES, I WILL HELP THEM LEARN AND GET THEM UP TO SPEED AND THEY BALANCE EACH OTHER SO WELL.
THEY ARE THE BEST DIRECTING TEAM I’VE EVER WORKED WITH.
I AM SO PROUD OF THEM.
IT IS THINGS LIKE THAT WHERE WE ARE TRYING TO DO NOT ONLY IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA BUT BEHIND THE CAMERA AS WELL.

>> I DEFINITELY, YOU KNOW, I FEEL -- I HAVE TWO KIDS.
I HAVE A ONE-YEAR-OLD AND A FOUR-YEAR-OLD SO I GET HOW OVERWHELMING IT IS -- I GET HOW CONCERNING IT IS, WHAT THEY ARE WATCHING ON TV.
