Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipyesterday we heard from Democrats in the state reacting to many of the policies that have come out of the Trump Administration in the first two months of his term while they're not happy a recent CNN poll showed that 79% of Republican and Republican leaning voters are feeling good about the GOP I'm joined now by the chair of the New Jersey Republican state committee Bob Hugin to offer his take on how Republicans in New Jersey are feeling about President Trump's recent actions chairman Hugin thanks so much for join us tonight um just want to ask you you know we're about two months into the the second Trump term how are Republicans here in New Jersey feeling so far it's been exciting time with a lot going on we're very happy that we think the country is now moving back in the right direction so we're we couldn't be more pleased what have you been most pleased with in terms of actions that this president has taken I I think this the first thing is the tone we need a president who acts does things we know he's the president I think the first thing he's done he delivered on the campaign promise of securing the Border we now are controll we're a country again I'm a big fan of immigration which I think most people are but we need to have a control we need to have the Border controlled let people come in that are legally here and uh so I'm you know I'm a big fan of that let's get that done a lot more work being done to get the country safe again get the economy going deregulation a lot of positive things going on it's I don't know less than two months I guess or two months in into the into the presidency so A lot's been done but he's certainly been the president are Republicans going to move any type of legislation forward that is going to make meaningful change uh so that there are Pathways to citizenship here in the United States I do think we should have comprehensive immigration reform but it takes 60 votes in the Senate so it it's not something Republicans can do unilaterally and and there are lots of comp complicated issues but I think we do need to have a pathway to citizenship for people that are good strong performers that want to help love love the country want to help the country move forward economically but we W need to get rid of the criminals we need to deport the criminals we don't need to criminals coming in our country and Comm committing the crimes that that they've done most of the push back that we're hearing from Democrats right now is about the cuts to programs and funding that we've seen come from the administration do any of the cuts that you've seen so far concern you you know I I'm not really aware of any Cuts yet I think that a lot of talk under Doge Department of government efficiency well I'm I'm not familiar with the real Cuts I think it's pausing things to make sure we make good decisions well for example the Department of Education fired half of its staff um no they they I think they fired probationary employees let's I don't think Department of Education it was half of the staff and then the probationary employees across multiple departments has now been um overturned in the courts as of yesterday 24,000 probationary employees returned to their positions um but for Department of Education for example is that the right way to go to to slash a department in half well I think the question is what is the role of that department do we need a Department of Education lots of things need to be done the US government needs to ensure that the states are operating things on a very fair and appropriate way educate our kids but let's be clear the education system in New Jersey is broken and failed the the minority kids in inner cities the poor white kids in rural areas are destined to a life of not the kind of opportunity they should have educationally or economically because of the poor educational system and we've refused to make reforms but education is a local issue it's a city it's a county it's a state thing federal government should provide resources but it shouldn't be in blocking in the way telling people how to run education how do they know what's good for Alaska what's good for New Jersey it needs to be local control locally it's locally funded for the most part with oversight not not bureaucracy telling people how to do things so I'm a big believer in deregulation let people get back to work let teachers teach and let let's let let's get things going here and improve the outlook for our kids because it's shameful for what we've done for generations of kids especially here in New Jersey well and local curriculum is set here in New Jersey for New Jersey schools um when it comes to tariffs just in the last few seconds the the president ran on making the United States more affordable are tariffs the way to go is this the right move when the Trump when when Trump himself says that we may be enter during a recession president Trump will be judged on his on his performance did he deliver lower prices the economy growing freeing it from strangling regulation Etc all good things that he promised and he's working on them so I can't I can't in two months to say I'm going to judge the success if it's an outcome oriented result that we should be talking about not the process itself so uh do I agree with 100% of things no I don't agree with 100% of the things but I'm very much aligned with what he's done so far and where we're headed but most importantly got to deliver on those results Bob Hugin chair of the Republican state committee thank you so much for being with us tonight appreciate your time thank you [Music]
