Spring Mainz The return of one of Louisville's oldest festivals is Kentucky Edition's Kelsey Starks has a preview.
New Lou's annual Bock Day celebration returns March 25th.
Now, if you live in Louisville, you probably know it for the traditional goat racing events.
But if you don't, Trevor Cravens is the festival's event organizer and he's here to tell us all about it.
So this ritual dates back to the mid-19th century.
I don't think a lot of people do this.
This goes back to where you had a lot of passers through and people in town who were waiting downtown either to make their way around the falls of the Ohio or elsewhere, and they would pass the time.
They would use the alleyways off of what's now Market Street, and they would race their goats.
And I've actually been told as well that they would use the goats to to transport, particularly like barrels up and down the alley as well as well.
So some people may be listening and going, what the heck are they?
All right.
So explain to is this for somebody who doesn't know what this is all about, what to expect?
Yeah, there's actually there's almost three events happening in one here or four events.
So the goat racing will start with the goat racing.
So local businesses and individuals get involved with this.
Some of our local forecasters get involved with this and sponsor goats and we have a local goat farm, Sunny Acres, who brings out baby goats.
They have about 30 baby goats.
They bring out they bring out adult goats and the sponsors get to name their goats.
They can make their own jockey silks, we call them.
They can get to dress their goat.
They can put a T-shirt or a handkerchief or something on the goat while they race.
And then the handlers take it from there.
Nobody's actually riding a goat.
Obviously.
They get the goats in the in the pen, and we have about 150 foot straightaway.
And they have the handlers sort of take off.
And it's usually kids from a local FHA foundation or something like that.
We have 12 or 13 local breweries involved, all from Louisville who are making their own special bark beer that they will bring to the event that will be for sale at the event itself.
And so it's a little bit of a festival and they're celebrating the beginning of spring as well.
And then on top of that, we have Wurst Fest, the best of the worst.
We crowned the champion.
And so that's where we take local restaurants and get them involved.
And Kentucky Proud is involved with that as well.
So our local restaurants go out and source local meat from Kentucky, proud partner or producer, and then they do their own take on their bratwurst.
And it could be a very traditional bratwurst.
Monarch Brewing did one couple of years ago that won or it could be something a little different Galaxy bar did one that was actually made of salmon.
So they do their take on that.
We bring it in.
We have a professional panel of judges who take a look at it and try it and taste everything.
Well, the party is already under way.
We've got pre parties, including baby goat photo ops, even baby goat yoga.
Yoga is coming up on March 18th.
Plus, goats on a float.
Don't miss that.
The St Patrick's Day parade this weekend, the real bug fest and Wurst Fest in Louisville's New Lulu neighborhood happens Saturday, March 25th.
Thank you, Kelsey.
That's something definitely worth looking out for.
And for those who don't know, New Lou is an area of downtown Louisville, also called the East Market District.
New Lou is short for new Louisville.
