Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipThis is Penn Cove, home to some of the most famous mussels in the wo.. Most of the time these mussels are just muscling.
But one weekend a year, it's a whole different story.
Let's explore.
This weekend, mussels are king.
Welcome to Musselfest.
For over 40 years, this event has attracted festival goers and bivalve lovers to Coupeville, Washington.
Along with cooking demonstrations and mussel eating contests, there's also chowder tasting.
Returning champion, mussel chowder with a corn topping.
That's Ben.
That's Adam.
And that's Manhattan mussel chowder.
And here's where the competition heats up.
Another reigning champ.
This one, Thai curry with basil.
And even if you don't like mussels, they got you covered.
All right.
People are.. here at the chef demonstration.
The next big event is the Mussel Hussle and Tussle.
Can you tell me a little bit about that?
Well, it's a competition between two Top Chefs.
There is a limited pantry of 12 ingredients they can choose from, and they're also allowed to bring two of their own ingredients of their choosing.
But in addition to that, there are two secret ingredients that they have no idea what they are, but they must incorporate in their dish.
They will serve five portions to our five judges, who will then rate each one, and the person with the highest number of points will be awarded the championship crown.
So Musselfest may be the perfect time of year to get a photo with a mermaid or get your face painted.
But there is fun stuff happening all year round.
Let's check out the museum.
With over 200 volunteers and thousands of volunteer hours, Musselfest is truly a community event.
Now it's time for Mussel Mingle.
I’m Angela.
Thanks for exploring.
I'll see..
