Is Alaska still a state whose 90 miles of streams and dozens of r It's also quite famous for some liquids, those which flow from a That being beers, bourbons and w Many of the world's best known distilleries can be found in the Bluegrass State.

And interestingly enough, pretty darn close to many of our lakes, rivers and We're here to take you on an exp of the secrets and histories of our intricate waterways while visiting Kentucky's distilleries, breweries and wine I'm Carrie.

And I'm Kyle.

And we're two Kentuckians who are proud of our state.

I'm going to go into town and visit a brewery that sits on top of a creek on t And then I'm going to go to a wi that sits on top of a mountain.

It's not really a mountain.

It's more of a hill, but still, it's up there.

So that I can catch some fish on Reba.

I'm going to have you meet a good friend of mine h He's going to tell you all about this fort.

And while he's doing that and yo adventure today, I want you to t trying to find the craziest story you can about me.

So how long has Fort Boonesborou been here?

By April 1775, Daniel Boone arri with a party of 20 and begins what we know as Fort Boonesborou So tell me a little bit about the structures here.

They would have had to have buil all of these.

I'm guessing it started very sma and then grew.

Right, So in our modern day campground down the hill, Sycamo is our primitive campsites.

That's where Boone and his 20 or originally built crude log struc log huts.

So it started out.

Yes, dirt floors, small log stru a lot like you see here.

And it kind of grew from there.

So how many people would have li in this frontier fort during the time of Daniel Boone?

and 20 to 30 settlers to cut out the Wilderness Road or the Boone of Fort Boonesborough was here on the Kentucky River, were just steps away from the Kentucky River.

Why here did the waterway have a particular influence on why Fort Boonesboro was settled here?

Of course, the waterway is is a food source It's a source of clean water.

But more than that, it's the int highway of its day.

You have to understand that roads are primitive at best The original wilderness trail is just wide enough to have one man on horseback, you know, single file.

Where the river is is a major thoroughfare for for for commerce, for travel.

So the river played an immensely important role.

Do you have any stories about Da that you particularly like?

My favorite is it deals with the of Boone's daughter, Jemima.

She and the Calloway daughters take a canoe down river just a ways from the fort and are kidnaped by Native Ameri Boone and a band of settlers from the fort pursue the Native with the girls all the way to Oh But they rescue them, right?

The it has a happy ending.

As fresh as it g Tell me the story of Dreaming Cr Brewing.

We started in 2018.

As far as th We had a bar before this kind of run to see how craft beer would in Madison County.

This is an old Social Security b Is it really all right?

Built in the sixties.

Was built.

Built like a tank fallout shelte but it was very bland, white, so we stripped it.

Dreaming creek itself runs underneath the city of Rich It starts in the ravine of EKU.

And then it pops up just behind our building over the hill there Okay.

The name itself Dreaming Creek, comes from a Dan You know, everything in Madison County is kind of Boone centric.

You have Fort Boonesborough and it's a lot of Boone around h So allegedly, Dreaming Creek was by Daniel Boone when he was on a bear hunting ex Fell asleep, took a drink of wat from the creek, got a little hot it, took a nap in a hollow tree, had a very lucid dream of being surrounded by Native Am Startled him awake, and he was a being surrounded by real Native Probably.

Probably not a true st Probably something he made up to beer at.

The local pub.

Right.

Or something like that.

But theoretically, allegedly, it's it█s named by Daniel Boone He names everything.

He's all over the place.

That that's why a lot of our bee actually named Boone centric nam So, like, you know, Natural Bridge is the State Park.

We've got a wilderne trail or a wilderness road.

Amber, It's a lot of a lot of all around the we've got 17, or 1874 here.

That's our EKU Beer it█s a Blond ale that we made for Eastern Ken That is the ravine on the front Okay, picture of the ravine itse where Dreaming Creek starts.

And there's a little story on th 1874, that name comes from the y that they got their funding to become a university.

Okay, so 1874 EKU, the kernels.

All right, good deal.

We got Kentucky Common Ale, and then down here, you got a Du That's right.

Dark lager, German beer.

Right.

If you come in here and can't fi you like, you really don't like Well, then I don█t even want to So what's your favorite beer?

My favorite is the common.

No doubt.

It's smooth, easy drinking.

It was a working man's beer.

If you went to a bar in Louisvil in the 1800s and ask for a beer, you're going to get a Common.

Th what they made it in their basem So, yeah, it's a great beer.

It's just.

It's.

It's definitely distinctiv It doesn't feel like so much of a lager as much.

You know, it's it's.

It's its own thing.

It is a good beer.

That's nice.

Very smooth.

So here's our.

This is our EKU, Colonel.

1874.

Blonde ale 1874.

This is the oldest one here, 187 Finely aged.

This is easy drinking smooth bee that is like this is sitting out This is, this is kayaking.

Lawn mowing beer, hot water.

Yeah.

Just out in the yard.

And so now we've got our IPA.

This is our staple IPA.

It's a traditional American styl IPA, American hops, and then the Dunkel.

I like German beer.

This looks heavy.

Even the glass feels kind of hea You know, it's a it's just a very chocolaty may describe it as chocolate.

In a glass.

You have a really sm but chocolaty flavor is good.

We've we make about 450 to 500 barrels of beer a year.

Okay.

31 gallons a barrel, 31 gallons a barrel.

That's a lot of beer.

I mean, I did maybe 2020.

I probably drank that much, but it's not common.

I'm doing good.

I haven█t seen you in forever.

It's been a while.

It has been.

So I hear you can tell me what I need to catch fish on Lake Reb Well, I mean, listen, all the fishermen think they all what you're supposed to catch at But also depends on what you're fishing for.

Lake Reba has, you know, catfish, bluegill, crappie, bass Well I hear the bass may be biti Yeah, actually, you know, bass are elusive.

Crappie can be elusive, too.

All the fish can be elusive.

Like they we understand that.

We call it fishing, not catching But yes, there are some really g in Lake Reba.

But you know, I don't know what you use.

Have fish before or what kind of big I usually, you know, hand the ho and let someone else do it for m So you can educate me a little b Well so if you take Reba, for ex Reba has a lot of grass, okay.

And so what would happen is, is that you would typically in the spring, that grass wouldn't be there yet And so you can fish a lot more o what we call open hook bait where the hook is exposed, it's a little bit easie You don't hook up a grass, well then but now if you go out you'll see grass everywhere so gets a little more difficult unless you're on your kayak or c and you're out there and you can kind of fish in the open water, then you can But if you're fishing close to t especially off the bank, you want something that's a little bit more weedles Bass are typically reactive, and so you want to create a reac You just don't want to like thro and then reel it back.

You want to bounce it off a piec or bounce it off a rock or it sc something creates a noise.

That's why the spinner baits so Creates a vibration with the with the blades.

And then if you really want to get in det there's all kinds of different b that go to your spinner bait.

Yeah.

I mean, this is a thing about ba fishing about all these baits.

There's all these little nuances about all of them.

So some guys or or women like to that there are different actions with the tails.

So if like we look at these Berk frogs, for example, this is called the beaten paddle but you can see how the tails ar Yeah, they're a little bit so they might have more, they might have more flex than t which is the buzz and speed toad which is very similar.

But look how this is angled diff where if I took a regular worm l I could just pinch and pull it a Well, try to pull that apart and see what happens.

Okay.

So it's actually made out of ela Yeah, that lasts a little bit lo it also gives a little bit diffe feel to the fish when they bite Okay.

You know what I mean?

Like, I asked this question all like, is there Nightcrawlers in Is there?

Not really.

But yet they love th They do.

You know what I mean?

So maybe something because they don't see it all th and they don't get them.

Bass eat 75% of their body size.

So think about this in a way tha hey, just because my fish is jus you know, could only be this big it'll still try to eat this fish Okay.

So just realize that it could, y a big it doesn't have to be a ma to try to bite this.

Like, if I catch a fish that size, I'll be happy.

Well, think about the gear, thou that you have to throw this with You know, Now you can see it's quite heavy so it's not your typical Zebco 33.

Yeah.

Now, this is a bait.

I'm familiar with.

It is this is the spinner bait You were just talking about and you said white spinner bait on this spinner bait with these painted blades.

What's cool is that I don't know if you've ever used, like, chart or anything, but you can take th and dip it in the chartreuse, Dye and then you have a little b of the kind of that chartreuse on your tips of your blades.

This is the beauty about these b is that you can kind of dye them and make them kind of personaliz That's right.

So if you want a blue or a red s you feel like that's what they'r hitting today.

Tak You know what goes great with be Pizza with wine, too, for that m You know what kind of pizza is best local with traditional favorites and f names from the Appalachian mount to the four cheeses of the apoca you can get a green hippie or a Kentucky hot brown on a piz or just design your own.

I'm guessing you can put just about anything you want on And if pizza is not your bag, ma grab a zombie with sketty and bu And don't forget to pick up your southern The dough recipe was handwritten while the sauce recipe was found in an office drawer.

The tradition is unique in its r Even the name was voted on by the community.

And if you want to know why, Apo just dip your crust in the ale.

Eight one Salsa while hanging wi some of the friendly locals to f Alex, Lake Reba sure is nice, and I understand it's very special to the city of Absolutely.

It's one of the most accessible we have here that's not outside of city limit So there's really a little bit of everything here at Lake Reba for folks to get outside and enjoy it.

The infrastructure here from from the Richmond Parks and they've continued to grow each and every year by adding different activities as well as more pavilions.

That allows for people to bring their friends and family to get At Lake Reba.

I saw there is a new kayak launc Yeah.

So that's an ADA accessible, which is for any sort of type of accessibility for people in wheelchairs and di as well as just an easier access for your normal kayakers.

Yeah, sometimes I have trouble just getting into the boat mysel It can be tough sometimes, depending on the lake and how the access is with the b But what's good about it is actually has a sliding ram where you can actually slide your boat down and then there's a cross member metal cross members to be able to lift yourself down into the b with your upper body.

nice.

Anything that can make it easier for people to get out on the wat and enjoy it.

That's what you are all about, A So our mission is primarily to educate beginners into the ou through different types of recre and that's from water, sports, kayaking, canoeing, padd boarding all the way out to bicy which is, you know, road biking and you can mountain bike as well as just your normal hybr in that sense.

And we provide professional life which is our main most important aspect of what we provide, because you never know what can happen on the water wit as well as just personal experie You know, we plan to get a lot o beginners out here which need th but every piece of equipment comes with obviously your paddle and your v as well as different types of bo we have sit ins, sit ons, double as well as canoes and paddleboar So whatever you prefer or you have an interest in, there'd be availability for that There's a lot of wildlife on thi lake too.

I know when we are launching, we saw your resident heron you were telling me about.

Yes, yes.

So there's quite a bit.

Obviously, you know, this is a great fishing lake, so you've got all your different bass and carp and bluegill, sunf all those good things.

There's also turtles and snakes and the bird variety is also ano a great one.

Other than herons, you know, you've got all your sm cardinals and blue jays and everything of that nature.

There is actually a bald eagle who steps, who stops in every so checks in as well as hawks.

You can catch them diving here at Lake Reba.

Yeah, absolutely incredible.

You want After you Let█s go meet Tom and try out a So Tom just wandered around out in these beautiful vineyards, and I assume that some of those beautiful grapes have been used what's sitting behind me here.

Definitely.

We have four acres of grapes out and every last one of them gets used in some of our wines here, I've got a little selection for you to sample today.

I'm going to share something wit that someone shared with me a wh It's kind of a a process or a way to taste wine to get the most out of the exper You're saying There's an actual process to thi I mean yes, to each their own.

I mean you can line them up and knock them back.

But what I kind of like to do, they call it the five S's of win Okay, so the first S, what you're going to do is you're going to see the wine just kind of observe it visually You're looking for the color of the clarity.

Just getting a first impression of what you're about to taste.

Excellent.

So once you've seen it, the next thing to do is kind of And I got a little heavy handed on your pour.

I love a heavy handed pour sir.

Just be cautious.

Kind of.

I see.

I see some luggage going Yeah, that's going to aerate.

The wine kind of bring the aroma to life.

Right.

You already were right.

It right there.

The next.

The next.

S is sniff Get your nose right in there.

Get a nice smell of the aroma, the bouquet of the wine.

And then the next two is sip and then savor.

SIP.

That's my favorite.

First s You just down the hatch.

Don't even think about it.

Cross the tongue and and and swa And that just kind of gets your your palate woken up and ready to taste know that there should six ounces that could swallow.

Right.

I mean, is that.

That sounds good.

Yeah, that's the most important So then the final one is to savo So take a nice big sip, kind of your mouth, chew on it for a whi Really get to know the wine.

So you may notice a theme on the wines that we selected today.

They're all named after members of the Chenault family.

Fantastic.

That's right.

Rebecca's reserve Cabernet.

We call it that after Rebecca Ch And it's a reserve Cabernet because that spends two whole ye in American oak barrels.

The next one that we have for yo is Ed's Red Ed█s Red for Ed Chenault.

That's it.

That's neat.

I like that very different good of little semi semi-sweet I would say and just unique.

Now we got Christina.

She was going on and on raving about this wine of hers.

Let's just see what this is all Tell me about Christina's, Christina's Cranberry And I didn█t even see cranberry out there.

My goodness.

Well, we do use all of our grape as you see, we have several other types of w and so we source fruit from other Kentucky grower We we bring fruit in from upstat New York, California, even South America.

This makes me think of the holid I was going to say, yeah, I'm totally getting this.

This is wh Instead of cranberry sauce on th pour a glass of this, I'm good t That's really nice, though.

Yeah, that's how you make make friends with t It's got that tart, you know, so that cranberry tart that you But it's.

It's almost.

It's definitely sweet.

It's kind of got a little bit of finish.

Now, this one, I was really curi because of the fix it juice.

So there's I think I could defin always use fix it juice so I was well is this something I need to while I'm working on an automobi or is it something I need to dri for a hangover in the morning or You know, I don't know.

Both are good opti It will definitely fix whatever and that is 100% concord grape juice fermented.

Yeah.

So to me, that is a sip of nostalgia.

It takes me back to as a child C grape jelly, Welch's grape juice But with that little bit of an adult twist.

And then I tried with putting a line in Lake Reba So now let's hear about your lab I was thirsty, so I had to head to Dreaming Cre And as I mentioned, it is on top of a creek.

Then I came here and just wandered around the vin It█s so beautiful Kyle, Did some about the wines and how they're And and I heard a wonderful stor about Daniel Boone Did you?

I did.

Well, I heard that his daughter, and the Calloway girls got kidnaped at Fort Boonesborou from a canoe on the Kentucky Riv and they were rescued.

So it has a happy ending.

How can you beat that?

I learned a story about Daniel B as well as you.

You know, the Dreaming Creek, when he was wondering about these parts, apparently to out of the Dreaming Creek and it was so good that he fell asleep right there by the Dreami I could fall asleep next to the creek right now.

And then he had a dream about the dreaming creek and that he was being surrounded by the Native Americans.

But apparently he escaped and ra and did all the other things he So many folks think that that may or may not b But it's a great story about dreaming and creeks.

And, you know, when you're havin dreaming creek, it makes sense, So, absolutely.

Well, I don't know whose story w probably mine, but at least we had some stories and some adventures here.
