Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- I signed up for sewing school.
A few months later, I gave my notice at the commercial printer where I was working and they didn't really believe it 'cause like who quits a career to go sew.
It seemed like what I had to do.
Along the way, I learned that I like to do women's accessories, women's coats and jackets, but I like doing them my way with usually lots of color, a little touch of whimsy, kitten pockets, that one coat that just fits that woman's personality.
What I'm doing is called slow fashion.
Everything I do is about reusing, forgotten textiles.
If it's a quilt, then it's a quilt I've found in an estate sale.
Usually it has holes in it, chewed from a dog or it's worn out or stained and I'm cutting around it and I'm using the, the really the usable fabric.
Then I go from there to cutting out the pattern and using it.
Everything I do is about giving that fabric a second life.
Some woman probably decades ago, probably love doing it 'cause a quilt is a lot of work and they're just getting rid of it and the estate or they've given up on it because the dogs chewed it and it's like, hmm, can I figure out what to do with it and make something special out of it?
And that's gonna be treasured again.
People I meet realize what I'm doing and realize their mother might have passed and they have a whole lot of fabric that they need to get rid of and it's really easy to get rid of it by giving it to me.
Oftentimes when I'm given fabric, I'm going through it.
If I know I won't use it, I'm putting it back at another thrift shop or giving it to other sewers or friends, but I'm keeping try to keep that fabric moving so it's getting used it.
It's really important for me to help people to understand that there's a lot more fabric in this world than we ever think about.
Everything I do is about recycling fabric and giving it another life.
It, it's really important because there is so much out there.
