Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(crowd cheering) (60's rock music) - [Narrator] In the early 60's in England, there was a group of young musicians who wanted to play the American Blues music of the Deep South.
This was the music of Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, and others, which came to be called Chicago Blues.
The groups at the forefront of this British Blues boom were the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds.
This latter group especially was to become fertile breeding ground for blues-based rock music and the promotion of the electric guitar as the pre-eminent instrument of the genre.
Eric Clapton was the guitarist whose playing was a crucial factor in the Yardbirds' rise to prominence.
And when he left, after struggling with their musical departure from traditional blues stylings, he was replaced by Jeff Beck, and then by Jimmy Page.
All three of these guitar players added new techniques and sonic elements like fuzz tones, feedback, and distortion, and reimagined new ways to play blues guitar.
This was the British Blues Explosion, and music was revolutionized forever.
