(audience applauding) - Thank you so much for the kind introduction, Judy and thank you dedicated faculty, parents, siblings, friends, grandparents, distinguished alumni, and especially this class of 2024 for allowing me to spend this very special day with you.
I wanna start by asking each of you soon to be graduates to take this moment right now, look around at these surroundings and truly take this moment in because this moment and this ceremony is a remarkable event and it represents a rite of passage into your future.
You will remember this day for the rest of your life, take it in and truly experience it because life goes by so quickly from here and as all of you walk out that door today, so begins the next chapter in your book of life.
I'm honored to have this opportunity to speak to all of you.
Michigan State and being a Spartan holds a very special place in my heart and I count it among one of the greatest influences in my life.
I attribute much of what I've learned here to the success I have today.
Personally, professionally, and spiritually.
The class of 2024 is a very special class.
This graduating class truly epitomizes our hashtag of what it means to be Spartan strong.
(audience applauding) As a class, you have been tested more than most.
You have had to make many four sacrifices starting in your senior year in high school due to the pandemic.
Many of these sacrifices continued through your first year at MSU.
Many of you were never given the opportunity to attend your high school senior prom, experience a high school graduation, live in a dorm, and many of you continued your education virtually throughout your sophomore year.
You have been through so much as a class and you have been given a gift.
It isn't a gift you've chosen, but one you have earned, the gift of perseverance.
(audience applauding) You have survived these experiences together and you are stronger because of it.
I am a mom of a 2024 Spartan graduate.
(audience applauding) I have a daughter too.
She'll get mad if I don't mention that.
My son, Marcus, who's sitting in the audience with you today, my best friend, a fellow Spartan named Mary Jane Sandberg, had a message from Marcus that I wanna share with each of you fellow Spartan graduates.
She sent this message in a text a few days before she passed away from COVID in the year of 2020.
She said, and I quote, "I feel for the kids, especially Marcus's class, the high school class of 2020 will always be special because of what they were forced to give up, but history has big plans for their generation."
(audience applauding) I am certain that I speak on behalf of all of us here with you today, how proud we all are of your courage, your determination, your grace throughout this journey, and we have no doubt that history has big plans for all of you.
This graduating class of 2024.
(audience applauding) In my position, I'm often called upon to speak at different events about many things such as technology, its impact on the digital age, AI, digital transformation, or just life lessons through my experiences throughout my career and I enjoy it because it's a passion of mine and I love the feeling of giving back.
So today I thought that I'd share some excerpts from one of my favorite, but one of my most challenging keynotes that I was asked to share during a global event commemorating International Women's Day.
I say it's my most challenging keynote because I was asked to write a letter to my younger self.
I modified it today and I wrote it for me at the age of 21 when I was graduating from Michigan State.
I promise it'll be brief and I hope I can leave you with a little bit of wisdom and inspiration along the way.
So here goes, "Dear Allison, there will be many times when you're not sure which decision to make, which priorities to set, which battles to fight, and what matters the most.
Figuring these things out is a work of a lifetime, but I've learned a few things in my own journey that I would share with you today.
Life lesson number one, embrace your butterflies.
We all experience butterflies in the belly and you will still get these butterflies throughout your career.
They are almost like the same feeling you had when you took Marketing 313 or marketing 430 and when you had to stand up and present in front of your peers.
Remember that feeling and embrace it for these butterflies represent you growing and challenging yourself.
In your career journey, it will be important, especially in this new work from home environment where it's easy to fall in a rut of complacency and become just too comfortable.
Allison, do something every day that gives you butterflies.
Network with people and take advantage of every opportunity to collaborate.
Use these opportunities to differentiate yourself and create a brand for yourself.
Stand out.
Life lesson number two, life is a marathon, not a sprint.
Soon, Allison, you will be starting your career.
Please remember this sacred life lesson, ambition and success don't mean you can't slow down to enjoy what's around you.
The world is yours.
Live.
Climbing the ladder to success is important, but it shouldn't be your sole focus.
There is a time for everything, but the right opportunity at the wrong time can actually be the wrong opportunity.
Life is a book full of many chapters and pages.
There will be plenty of time.
Which brings me to life lesson number three, follow your instincts.
Everyone has an innate advantage.
It's called instinct or intuition.
Listen to yours.
If something doesn't feel right, it isn't.
But don't confuse that with risktaking.
Butterflies in your stomach are a good thing, but know how to differentiate the butterflies from the bees.
If your instinct points you down a path you can trust that that is the right path to take.
Even if it's a difficult one to choose.
Throughout your life and career, you will have to make difficult and unpopular decisions, but they are necessary.
Making unpopular decisions is hard, whether professional or personal, but they must be made to be true to yourself.
Life lesson number four, expect setbacks and grow from them.
The tech industry you launched your career in was very different from today's environment.
Corporate America was very different in the late 1980s.
Life was full of many firsts.
The first female director in the company, the first director to have a baby without a maternity policy and you will often be the only woman in the room.
There will be many learnings and things didn't always go as planned.
At times, you will fall short of your expectations and you will feel like you've let people down.
You may even feel like you failed yourself, but don't look at it that way.
Setbacks are life lessons.
They're like a stop sign on the road.
They allow you to stop, reflect, and either continue to move ahead or turn into a different direction.
Learn from them.
And the final life lesson number five, love your family and your friends.
A strong foundation is built on family, faith and friendship.
This foundation is your true compass and will guide you throughout your life.
It all starts with family.
Family is life's greatest treasure.
Bond.
Your family is your true mirror.
They will keep you grounded and they will keep you in check.
They will tell you if you've crossed the line or if you're not pushing yourself hard enough or that you need to find the courage to make a change.
They are your safest place.
Value your friendships, your fellow Spartans.
You have learned the power of friendship at MSU.
The friends you've made here will be your dearest friends.
They will become your support in life, your network, your confidants, and the Spartan network is one of the strongest networks in the world.
They are everywhere.
As you relocate around the world, there will always be a Spartan close by.
Stay connected.
Allison, in summary, I hope you find this letter meaningful.
Know that life is unpredictable.
Take it all in and never lose sight of your dreams.
To the graduating class at 2024, I wanna leave you with this quote from Mark Twain, a great American author.
"20 years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you did not do than by the ones you did do.
Explore, dream, discover."
I encourage each and every one of you to explore, dream and discover.
Go for it.
Remember your foundation, your values, your friends, family and faith.
Use that foundation to fuel your life's journey and give back to others along the way.
MSU empowered me to believe in myself.
I am a Spartan and I am part of an incredible supporting global community where everything is possible.
Use this powerful gift to make your dreams come true.
Congratulations and go green.
(audience applauding) - Thank you Allison for the wonderful and inspiring remarks and for all you do in support of MSU and the Broad College.
Now I am pleased to introduce Diana AnteBaez who will present the student commencement address.

Additionally, she's been an integral part of the National Society of Minorities and Hospitality Business for three years, serving as the external vice president this last year.

Beyond her leadership roles, Diana has made significant contributions to impactful research within her industry and has represented Broad at seven different conferences, Diana is posed to make a lasting impact in the hospitality industry through her academic achievements, leadership roles, and dedication to diversity and inclusion.
Please join me in welcoming Diana to the podium.
(audience applauding) - Thank you Interim Dean Whipple for the Kind introduction.
Hello and welcome, proud family, dear friends, esteem faculty, the my members of my fellow graduating class of 2024 and of course to all those in our Spartan community.
My name is Diana daez and as a first generation student and Latina from Detroit, I am honored to be your 2024 Eli Broad commencement speaker.
(audience applauding) Standing here today, waves of excitement, relief, and most importantly, anxiety also fills the room.
This is truly a surreal moment because as a freshman I had no idea what the following academic year would look like.
Much less have the possibility of envisioning what our graduation day would be, but before addressing how our university career started and telling the story of us, I wanna share my story.
My mother immigrated from rural Mexico to Detroit in pursuit of a better life for her future family.
She spent years working hard washing dishes during the day and cleaning restaurants at night with every penny earned going towards school backpacks and uniforms.
My sister made comparable sacrifices, giving up so much to continue to be my role model in influencing me to pursue a higher education.
(speaking foreign language) And while many of us may not be children of immigrants, we collectively forged our own paths as the first ever class to begin their university careers completely virtually.
And while studying from home had a silver lining of avoiding the freshman 15 and enjoying another year of homemade tortillas, the year was difficult.
This uncertainty painted the first defining characteristic of our graduating class of 2024.
With no guidance, we navigated this now academic virtually space as no amount of dorm essential YouTube videos would teach us what to pack to move into our childhood bedrooms.
This clearly painted that characteristic, which is resilience.
We did not let the uncertainty define us.
We attended online career fairs with blazers and maybe sweatpants, filled our schedules with as many in-person classes for the following year and pushed through zoom fatigue.
On a more personal note, due to hardships at home, I was one signature away from dropping out, being minutes away from calling myself a Broad alum.
I cannot fathom the idea of not continuing my education as a Spartan, but at the time it seemed paralyzing.
I know I'm not alone.
Perhaps you too had a time when putting on your cap and gown seem impossible after taking a CSC exam or leaving the library feeling like you didn't retain a single note set.
But hey, we passed the class right?
The class of 2024 showed me and so many others that our common dedication of building our Spartan community was life changing.
The mentors I encountered and bonds I formed with my peers served as supporters to keep us pushing to accomplish our dreams.
Reflecting today, it is a privilege to say that I was able to honor my family's sacrifices through obtaining my degree.
In February, 2023, our resilience was tested once more.
When we faced a tragedy that was previously unimaginable, we demonstrated true strength with confronted with adversity.
Rather than transferring off colleges in a moment of fear, we came back home to East Lansing with love and support for one another.
We found strength within our chosen family here at MSU, we learned that we are not only Spartan strong but Spartan strong together.
The second defining characteristic of our graduating class became clear to me, unity.
From beginning our university careers via zoom to navigating the challenges these past four years at Michigan State, we had not only risen to every challenge persevering, but thriving as we cultivated a sense of community while uplifting each other.
Returning to our university, our chosen home, we were embraced by faculty and staff who invested into us as though our success was their very own and peers who evolved into our collective family, yet surrounded by ambitious individuals in a prestigious business school.
Comparison crept in, fueled by every LinkedIn update regarding summer internships or career milestones.
I found myself comparing myself to my classmates in a toxic competition with burnout quickly settling in.
I took a step back to recenter myself around the fact that obtaining a business degree wasn't to reach a certain accolade or paycheck, but to gain the ability to create an impactful change.
I want to acknowledge that education itself is an immense privilege.
One that for some like my mother in rural Mexico, the opportunity did not exist and for others, the opportunity is difficult to obtain due to systemic roadblocks like here in the US.
And let us not forget to those whose opportunities is being erased as I speak to those that are happening the horrors and Gaza.
I quickly realized that with this privilege, each day presented a choice, embrace comfort and let the day slip by or confront discomfort.
Creating opportunities of growth.
Today as a senior, I'm able to reflect on how every risk I set yes to has led me down a path to achieving my own goals and dreams.
Through leadership positions, global experiences, and out-of-state internships.
In the journey of life, each of us holds the boundless potential waiting to be actualized.
Above all else, this was my biggest lesson I learned here at Michigan State.
Let us remember that our paths are as unique as our aspirations, and there lies the true beauty.
With every challenge faced, every setback overcome and every dream pursued, you carve out your own unique path.
Your journey is not predetermined by your major, the internships you experienced or your final GPA.
Your journey is yours to mold and shape.
Let your potential be your guiding star, illuminating you down a path to success that only you can define.
Embrace the freedom to create, to innovate, and to inspire.
In the busyness of graduation, I hope you find time to reflect all that campus has given you.
What have you learned, experienced, and achieved that wouldn't be possible if it weren't for attending Michigan State?
I'm grateful for the opportunity to call myself a Broad Spartan, embodying leadership with values of integrity, community, and authenticity.
Today we receive one last thing from Michigan State, a bachelor's degree that comes with the ability to continue to write our own story out there in the real world that we've always been warned about these past four years.
And when we begin our careers and are faced with the question who will make business happen.
Remember, Spartan's will together.
When you leave campus here today, no longer an undergraduate student, feel pride in knowing that you are part of a class like no other.
One that is a living testament to the power of unity and resilience and whose potential knows no bound when forging our own paths.
The next time I say these two words, I will be a Spartan alum.
So for the last time in my undergraduate career, go green.
