A conversation with Doctor Rod Buckner.
With Buckner Funken Jazz.
Funken, funken, yes.
the most carefully pronounced name in the funk business.
You got that right.
I tell you what, in this set, we heard just a wide open jazz jam, right?
We heard some old school funk.
We heard, like, some Afro groove.
You stuck some Afro groove in there as well.
So it's old school funk, but there's a lot of music happening.
Got stuff in there, man.
Yeah?
That's called barbeque ribs and greens.
Beans and stuff.
True or false?
There is a place for old school funk in 2025.
There is a place?
Or was a place?
True or false?
There is a place.
Yes.
That's true?
There is?
Somewhere.
And you're going to find the place?
Somewhere.
Okay.
Well, good.
I mean, I'm your phone is still ringing and people still wan what you're doing a little bit.
Yeah, it's hard.
It's hard.
I'm hearing a lot of young guys playing this funk music.
It's taken off.
They're playing funk all over the world, and Right.
But, see, they need to come to us, as old guys, To really do it, huh Bobby?
[Bobby] Yes, sir Well, you're you're you're showing them how it's done because there's something about just being locked in.
When you're young.
I guess maybe guys want to show off, but you guys just lock in super, super tight.
Yeah, but after you have the makers.
Youre alright brother.
Okay?
In the groove.
Thats right Doctor Rod Buckner with Buckner Funken Jazz.
You really throw in a lot of barbecue, some greens, maybe some baked beans.
Somebody found some okra yummy in there.
Tell me.
These are all metaphors fo the music that you put together.
Yes, sir.
And tell me about your audiences, because you get people from all walks of life coming to your shows and and hanging on every beat.
Well, I mean when we're down to Spangalangs down the street there, I have kids that I've taught from Gove Middle School come down there, come down and see see the band because they remember they were in band class.
They come down support.
So we have all ages come in.
You know that can get in the door.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Legally.
Legally, thank you.
Right, right, right.
Well, it is great to have you as a part of the Denver music scene.
And you and your, your compadres, these fellows that you put around you.
Even though y'all have some experience.
There is still a place, like I said, for funk for this feel good make you want to dance kind of music, right?
Right.
We just gotta find it.
Okay.
You know, because, I mean, it's a lot of blues, which is good.
Yes.
Okay.
A lot of blues happening.
And, you know, with the Colorado Blues Society, right?
Give them a shout out.
Yes.
You know, and lots of rock.
Lots of rock.
Okay.
Based on the blues, on the funk.
That's right.
That's right.
But as far as the funk is concerned, it's it's tough.
Okay.
Well, he's what he's saying is give him a call is what he's saying.
Hello.
And he'll he'll put the band together.
You've been doing this for a couple decades now.
Yes, sir.
Holding fort as one of th preeminent funk bands in Denver.
Keeping the flame alive.
Right.
And, so I heard what you said.
Give the man a call.
Let's keep them.
Keep them going.
