(audience cheering) (upbeat rock music) I can hear the sound through the walls And I'm on the outside No windows, no doors, now I'm the one With the light I played the hand I was dealt I'm a high dollar liquor on the bottom shelf I cast a hundred lines with no reply With no reply Can I lean in Can I lean a little closer Can I lean a little closer Oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh-oh I'm in a crowded room No matter what I do I don't have equity in a masterpiece Can I lean in Can I lean a little closer Can I lean a little closer Can I lean in Can I lean a little closer Can I lean a little closer Can I lean in Can I lean in Can I lean in Oh oh oh oh-oh Oh oh oh oh (audience cheering) - Thank you so much.
It's very, very, very good to be home.
We moved to Seattle in 2020 and I truly, truly miss Albuquerque every day.
It's a very, very special place, and I'm so happy to see all of you.
(gentle music) Some people need More from me Than I can give What I can give Is never enough Why so serious Flowers in a fling You grow in the weeds Let me be weaned Mine Mine (gentle upbeat music continues) Why so serious Flowers in a fling You grow in the weeds Let me be weaned Mine Mine Mine (gentle upbeat music continues) (audience cheering) (audience cheering) Thank you.
- Thank you so much for having a conversation.
Sup?
Happy Saturday.
- We did it.
- Yeah.
- We're here.
- Thank you for having me, Ken.
- I'm so happy to have you.
I was a weird kid.
- Homeschooled?
Yeah?
- I should probably not say that.
I was though.
I wasn't very good at being homeschooled, so I quit and I went to Thailand and then I came back and got my GED.
Then I moved to Seattle.
- There's a lot of adventures in there.
- Yeah, I feel like I've experienced a good amount of life in 31 years.
You've got the locks And you've got the keys, I think they're your worst enemy - I never knew I wanted to pursue arts and creativeness, and somehow in New Mexico, I connected to that.
So New Mexico's a very special place for me and my family.
- I agree.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
No, I think that it is one of the most creative places ever.
When I was a kid, my first piano lesson, I remember it very vividly.
I couldn't even touch the floor.
My feet were too short.
I was just a little kid.
And my piano teacher, she said, "I want you to find one note on the piano that makes you feel something."
And she's like, "What do you feel right now?
Find it."
That's how I learned to relate to music is like emotion first, it's an expression, and I feel like I've been doing that ever since.
It's a gift to be able to express what's inside of you.
Sometimes you don't have words and music can help us in that way.
There's a lot of songs that I wrote in one sitting just after I got in a fight with someone or just really emotional in that moment.
And I feel like that song helped me process that moment.
Once we recorded it and got it out into the world, it felt like it kind of wasn't mine anymore.
And maybe it would help someone else but it already gifted that to me - That's the beauty of it.
- Music is magic.
- It's magic, the best.
Thank you so much.
- Yeah, appreciate it.
(upbeat music) Do you know we've all got scars They make us who we are If you're still bleeding That's not right Stubborn man does it on his own Strong man knows he's not alone I'm sorry That looks so heavy (upbeat music continues) Are you okay It's alright if you're not And it's true we are not the same But your pain is my pain (upbeat music continues) Oh oh, I'm sorry That looks so heavy I'm sorry (audience cheering) Thank you so much.
Bye.
- We've been waiting a long time for this.
Get it up for Albuquerque's own Slums of Harvard.
(audience cheering) Kimo Theater, how you feeling?
Woo!
Make some noise.
(upbeat alternative music) - Let's go.
I don't wanna fall tonight I don't wanna keep on trying If this is all that I'm to find I don't wanna count the days Day to day until it's all over Over and over till I can't control it Asking what's this all for Twenty something, always wasted Never growing up, I don't wanna waste it I m just faking til I make it Always feeling like I'm falling off the deep end Twenty something, always wasted Twenty something, always wasted Life's no fun, not a game What are you doing, act your age Go to school, get good grades Find a job and get paid to waste away That's what they all say You should be more like what's his face And whatever happened to what's her name?
What are your plans when you graduate?
I think I'll just run away from all this f***ing rubbish Dye my hair and join a band and really just say f*** it And do whatever I like and whatever makes me happy Have a freezer fully stocked with frozen pizza And chicken nuggets And you think I'm a loser who's clueless You don't respect Confused drowning in booze And drowning in student debt, but who are you to choose What I should have to prove I'm fine acting a fool I'm lost with no regrets because I m Twenty something, always wasted Never growing up, I don't wanna waste it I'll just fake it till I make it Always feeling like I'm falling off the deep end Twenty something, always wasted Always f***ing wasted Twenty something, always wasted Always f***ing wasted Ladies and gentlemen, Chuck Filthy on the bass.
Toby Smiles on guitar.
Nick 'The Machine' Mourning back on the drums.
Johnny Sax on guitar.
I'll grow up someday Nevin Montano on lead vocals.
I'll grow up someday Get your hands up, get your hands up, get your hands up.
Get them up, get them up, get them up But until then I will be Twenty something, always wasted Never growing up, I don't wanna waste it I'll just fake it till I make it Always feeling like I'm falling off the deep end Twenty something, always wasted I'll grow up when I want to Twenty something, always wasted I'll grow up I'll grow up KiMo theater i need to hear you!
Woo-hoo!
(upbeat music) You're the leading actress And I'm just another face in the crowd Surrounding with doubt and my head in the clouds I'll always be this way I ll admire from the sidelines You're the star of the highlight I know you ll never notice So hopeless, so hopeless There's no time you can waste With all the rejects There's no reason to keep All your secrets I can t get out If you can t see me right now It's all just because You're the leading actress And I'm just another face in the crowd Surrounded with doubt and my head in the clouds I'll always be this way I ll admire from the sidelines You're the star of the highlight And I know you'll never notice So hopeless, so hopeless Be on the left for maximum elegance All of the charm with a side of intelligence Out of my league is an understatement Your penthouse and I'm stuck in the basement Perfection s infectous, impressively blessed with A specless complection exceptional reflection Time and attention is out of the question Just shoot the shot, accept or rejection Because I know I'll regret every single opportunity To say what I should have And I know you'll forget all the underwhelming times That we never met because You're the leading actress And I'm just another face in the crowd Surrounded with doubt with my head in the clouds I'll always be this way I ll admire from the sidelines You're the star of the highlight And I know you'll never notice So hopeless, so hopeless KiMo theater, get up off your feet!
Let's go!
Let's go!
So hopeless, so hopeless Woo!
One more time, make some noise for Bands of Enchantment.
- Starting lineup for your world champion Slums of Harvard.
- Get in there.
- Go, go!
- Closer.
-Two times!
(upbeat music) - What's a slum?
Dude, I'm a slum, you're a slum, we're a slum.
- Slumunity is what we call it.
- We definitely like to promote our shows to create a safe environment for everyone to come and just be themselves and have a really good time.
- So just like create like a friendship environment, like a family environment.
Like we make you feel welcome and that rubs off on everyone and everyone makes each other feel welcome.
- We want you to forget your troubles, walk away knowing you had a great night with your friends, family, whoever it may be.
- [Ken] So are you guys all from Albuquerque?
- Born and raised.
- All of us.
Yes sir.
- [Ken] What's the origin story of the band?
We love a good origin story on that.
- I'm the slum father.
- Tell the story.
- Well I used to live off of Harvard Street by UNM.
All these guys would come and we'd call it getting slummy.
- None of us like knew how to play instruments except for Nick, but he wasn't in the band yet.
So we all basically started playing at the same time on guitar, Zach was also on guitar, and then we all voted that no one really wanted to be bass, so he was like alright, I ll do it.
- I was voluntold.
That's how almost every bass player starts Yeah you know I like it, like it, yeah - It's time!
- Everybody out there, I need you to make some noise.
If you ever had your heart broken before, make some noise.
I know we've all been there.
(audience cheering) Yeah yeah, so have we, so have we.
(upbeat music) Let's go!
