I grew up in a musical family, and I've always been around it, always enjoyed it.
And then as I got older, I was like, maybe this is something I could do for a living.
I never felt pressure, I guess, to pursue it, like 'I've got to make it.'
I just always have enjoyed it.
And I was like, if I can choose, I'm gonna do this.
And it always just kind of worked.
I lived in Lubbock for a while and played music and played coffee houses and places around town.
And I lived in California for awhile and kind of did the same thing out there, and enjoyed my time out there.
I got to play with some amazing musicians, and I think probably grew musically, hopefully, and was challenged a lot in a lot of good ways.
I think the most value comes from leaning on other people, and I love to see what other people add to a song or to a style or something.
So, over the years, playing a lot of the same songs with a lot of different musicians and just kind of letting them be themselves and not going, hey, here's how it goes.
You know, that's, that's a value to me is what other people bring to the table.
And then when I moved back to Lubbock, kinda got married, settled down, and I have three kids now, and it's just not the priority.
It's not the, it's not the thing that I'm pursuing, but I still love to do it.
So, and too, seasonally, like I know that this is a season where I'll play every once in a while, but it's not the kind of thing where I'm like, it's not more important than spending time with my kids at home.
I'm not gonna schedule things that are gonna interfere with other things in life.
So it's definitely something that will always be a part of my life, something that I value.
And I think the friendships that come from music will always be there, and I'll always continue to grow and do music, continue to craft the gifts that I have and the enjoyable parts of music.
So it's been good to do music in a way that's not pressure.
It's not like, man, I've got to make sure I've got 17 shows scheduled or else I'm not gonna be able to eat this month or anything like that.
So it's definitely a thing where I get to do music on my own terms and play and sing and write kind of when I have time, and that's been good.
That's definitely the way that it looks different now than it did before when I was young.
So, this song that I'm about to play is one called 'Working Hard.'
And I wrote it probably five, somewhere between one to 10 years ago.
I don't remember exactly.
And just about how in life, it's easy to work hard on things.
And sometimes nobody notices, but that's not what it's about, so.

♪ ♪ Darlin,' your ways are so lovely ♪ ♪ And I'm falling in love ♪ With everything you do ♪ Yes, I am ♪ Right now (guitar music) Yeah, I think inspiration definitely has changed.
When you're young, everything's a little bit more wide open and rose colored, and you pull from your, or I, I pulled from my immediate emotions kind of as, as a songwriter.
And then, as I've gotten older, began to kind of see perspective on things and writing from, from different perspective and challenging myself to come, come about maybe the same idea that we all kind of live in the same world, but what's a different perspective to come at it from, and enjoy the challenge of that.
Kind of sometimes putting yourself in a box and saying, how can I be creative with these elements, with these ideas?
And crafting something maybe a little bit outside of just the basic emotions that I might feel towards something.
'Cause I've already done that for most things, I guess.
You know, when you're young, you feel like heartbreak and you just write about what you feel.
And I think when you get older, you feel heartbreak, and it has a different perspective.
And you can write about it from not just your own thinking, but of kind of zooming out and having a snapshot of everything that's kind of going on in the middle of heartbreak or in the middle of joy or loss.
And I guess it's like, what I, what I want to write about is different than what I would write about.
I don't know if that makes any sense.
But now I might go through something that's heartbreaking or hard, but it's not something that I necessarily feel like I need to write about.
Whereas when I'm young, when I was younger, you just write about whatever's in front of you.
Now, I think I take from those experiences, whether it's heartbreak or joy, and put those things together and use those emotions to create something that's maybe a little bit more, has more depth to it, as opposed to just a surface emotion.
So, I enjoy kind of having a different perspective and challenging myself to write in a different way than I would have, you know, 10, 15, 20 years ago or however, however old I am.
This is a song called 'Kansas City.'

Like I said earlier, I grew up in a musical family.
So I have cherished the relationship that I've had with my family.
My parents both play music still to this day.
And I had a brother that played music also, and I enjoy the, the camaraderie of playing music together.
And I think there's something special about doing that with your family.
Not in like a, we all have to get together and harmonize and sing kumbaya or something, but there there's something sweet about it.
And so I'd love to get to do that with my kids when they're older, but not at the, not at the sake of family peace or whatever, you know.
It's not gonna be a forced situation by any means.
So, but yeah, I would love to, to get to play music with my kids someday.
Anytime I get out a guitar, they think it's fun, and they just kinda like to mess with it or anything.
So they still think I'm cool, but, or they don't even know what cool is, so that's good, but they're young enough, they haven't shown a specific interest in music, but they have, you know, they're interested in the guitar, whatever instrument I have out at the time.
I think they can carry a tune.
I think they have good pitch, but we'll see.
I don't want to, I don't want to pressure, put any pressure on them to go towards music, but I would love to be able to play music with them someday.
