Dave had emergency spinal surgery and no where to go while he recovered. That didn't slow him down.
After living in a camper in the desert for a year, Dave Like was eligible for an apartment from Catholic Outreach, a long-running organization in town that helps people experiencing homelessness. He was approved for the place, and felt like he could start living again.

This is Dave Like.
He lives in an apartment in Grand Junction with his dog, Annie.
(Singing) Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily.
ANNIE: Woof!
Life is but a dream.
He used to live here, in the desert north of town.
I would have to move from place to place.
You know, the desert, they're like, You can't live here.
His life has changed a lot over the last few years.
I didn't know at the time, but I had a spinal injury and my legs stopped working and I told my doctor, my legs aren't working.
if I sit too long it tears up my back if I stand too long it tears up my back, if I walk too much, my legs give out.
Years of physical labor caught up with Dave.
I went from living in a house on Tiara Rado golf course to living in the camper the desert.
He couldn't work and lost a lot.
I can't pick stuff up off the ground.
It's difficult.
Doing laundry is hard, you know, everything is difficult for me.
I was upset about that, and upset about my legs.
And so for a good two or three months, I was in a pretty deep hole.
Living in the desert for a year.
I don't know what I would have done.
I would have figured it out.
But it was a godsend.
Dave and Annie wouldn't have their apartment today without Catholic Outreach, a long running organization in town that helps people experiencing homelessness.
And I didn't believe it at first, like, hey, we got you a place.
I was like ‘what?
Dave's is one of dozens of apartments Catholic Outreach provides for people in Grand Junction.
Everything's here, brand new furniture, dishes, silverwar I'm like, whoa, I can start living today.
Ready?
Lets do this.
When this first happened to me, I felt like I lost Dave.
This 15 hour a day, seven days a week, guy thats always going so fast.
I've had two nightclubs, three construction companies, a roofing company then I was in the car business off and on for 20 years.
I don't feel like I'm him anymore.
He had to slow down.
I can't walk very well.
Yeah, I need a scooter now.
Well, at least a little bit.
Let's go find another Frisbee.
Cool I got a scooter, Im gonna put flames on it put a pirate flag on it.
Now he's learning photography.
I looked in to a program at the VA called Vocational Rehab.
Dave is a veteran.
I've done so many things.
He was a lab tech in the Army.
Okay, I'm going to keep doing a lot of things, and they'll either teach you to be an entrepreneur, or send you back to school.
Definitely still a lot to learn but I always wanted to be a photographer.
His goal now is to travel and make videos with his dog.
I know what, get a dog and start a YouTube channel.
A very engaging subject.
I max things out when I do it.
Six terabytes of footage I'm going to upload of her online that I haven't yet and she has a fanbase already.
Hoping he and Annie can reach people who are worse off.
The biggest issue for veterans is outreach so hopefully we can reach out and her show will reach people and then we can help vets be like guys There's more out there.
You're 23.
There's so much to see.
Sharing his experience of slowing down.
The hardest part for me through all this, is just to stop and be gracious.
And asking for help.
