turning to the Middle East Hamas has agreed to a ceasefire deal proposed by qar and Egypt the terms are still unclear but both the US and Israeli governments confirmed their reviewing the details in the plan the development came just hours after Israel called on Palestinians living in the southern city of Rafa to evacuate immediately and as student L protests continue on college campuses here in New Jersey and across the us at Princeton and ruter universities the administrations are taking heat for different reasons Melissa Rose Cooper has the latest the most important thing is to make clear to the university um how little or how sick people are of what they're doing David meski is just one of a group of students here at Princeton University who for the last four days have had little or nothing to eat as they take part in a hunger strike as a show of solidarity with Gaza what we're trying to make clear is just how shameful the University's response to the divestment call has been uh the university has tried to make it seem as if the sort of our actions here in setting up you know a peaceful area and also engag in in peaceful sit in they're trying to make us seem as if we're somehow a threat to Public Safety or causing uh health and safety risks but we're trying to make clear is that actually their refusal to meet with students and seriously negotiate is what is causing the real threat now students and some faculty members are calling on the school's Vice President to resign after 15 protesters were arrested last week we're already not very pleased with um uh with VP Calhoun because uh we got a preemptive letter before the encampment even started um saying if you do this this and this um you're going to be um arrested and then after the events at Cleo Hall um she wrote a letter that was that was a mischaracterization calling the students um violent uh impolite threatening uh which was absolutely not true a chinia cilum was one of the students arrested we are barred from entering campus except today have some meetings um and we were evicted from our housing but that was later reinstated um and we have um charges of defiant trespassing she says Princeton's actions went too far last year a student who stormed the capital and was a part of the inserection was allowed to graduate from Princeton and there were no disciplinary charges levied against them they were allowed to interact freely with classmates allowed to go to class and complete their assignments and I am protesting a genocide that's currently happening in Gaza and I'm not allowed to be a part of of the larger Community meanwhile over at Ruckers the president is defending the University's decision to meet eight out of 10 demands of students protesting the war in Gaza the president stating during a Board of Governors meeting earlier today I am confident in our decisions they allowed us to maintain a safe and controlled environments to protect Rucker's students and Rucker's property and to assure that our students academic progress taking finals and completing the semester was not impeded but not everyone agrees Senator John bramic is now calling for legislative hearings to stop the demands from going forward there's a lot of money appropriated by the state of New Jersey for ruter don't you think the taxpayers have a right to weigh in on this issue I mean these are pretty simple Concepts this isn't uh necessarily about the war because some Can Leg legitimately argue that Israel was over the top in terms of it response that's a legitimate discussion but what's not legitimate is the University cow to the students and making no demands themselves back at Princeton students say the least the university can do is have a dialogue with them about their concerns but they maintain they're willing to continue the strike until the charges against the students arrested are dropped as well as their demands of divestment are met however a spokesperson for Princeton told us University officials have been in touch with protest organizers to support their freedom of expression the school also says they have Physicians monitoring the students's health during their strike for NJ Spotlight news I'm Melissa roll Cooper [Music]
