- You know, I've had so many enriching experiences for me through the art, and one of the most unusual is to get a letter from a local warden at a women's workhouse, a prison here in my community, and it seemed that there was one individual who's in prison for life for murder, had done just an exquisite painting of me, to the point that the warden took the risk of contacting me and said, "Would you be able to come and see this exhibit with your portrait in it that is well, well done?"
And I said, "Sure."
But actually you go through and you put your material in, you get checked and you turn it, and it was an enriching experience to have a chance also to meet the young artist, and I complimented her on her work and wished her success and asked her what she hoped to do when she gets out with this talent, and that's when I was informed that she didn't think she would be getting out, but she had hoped that the work would be a saving grace for her.
I could tell that she was counting on art helping to heal her and put her on a more positive path, and I think that I shared with her, "That's a wonderful way to look at it, because it certainly can, and I think that it will."
