Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(bright music) (gentle music) - It's Wednesday morning on the Platte river, and I'm gonna read Rowdy Randy.
Here we go.
(paper clacks) There she is plotting her way with her sidekick.
(paper clacks) Rowdy Randy started her day before the rosy glow of the dawn.
She buzzed and buzzed from dawn till dusk as annoyance was her game.
And she played it non-stop.
"I am the toughest cow girl around," Randy boasted.
And she was a sly lone ranger and preferred to work alone.
"Target straight ahead!"
(paper clacks) (water burbles) Well, Rowdy Randy swooped down and she dove towards her first target.
It was an unsuspecting bandit, a furry one, and Randy couldn't resist.
Well, those rascal's ears perked up.
And when it tried to nip her, Randy had to think again, "Maybe it's time to rethink must sneaking ways."
But she laughed and she boasted, "Ha, no one can match my stealthy moves because I am the greatest outlaw."
And she felt brazen from that first close call of the day so she's zipped away to look for another target.
And she soon landed on a hilltop between two trees, but Randy, she didn't settle for long.
And as the sun's first peek of light started to show her restless eyes saw everywhere.
Buzz, it was time she flew towards those shimmering shallows.
(paper clacks) And Randy, she flew low and she eyed a slippery scoundrel.
It was a lively leaper, and it launched right at her.
Randy, she bucked left, she bucked right.
She was like a rodeo dare devil.
And she nearly escaped this cunning critter.
"Ha," Randy laughed.
"Thank you for the shower."
'Cause she was too tough for any tough day to get under her skin.
(paper clacks) Randy, she sat for a spell and she dried her wings in that bright morning sun and pondering her predicament she said, "A group of me is what I need."
And she buzzed off to find the Tenderfoots that she could train.
And she spied these wild-eyed bunch of bandits and they were feasting by the roadside.
"Is this the team of Outlaws that I've been looking for?"
Well, she's zipped up to them and stated heartedly, "I am the Duchess.
I'm the toughest Bronco Buster around these parts."
Well, those bald creatures, they ignored her and they went right back to the roadside chow.
"So much for comradery," Randy said undeterred.
"I guess out West a cowgirl settles her own problems."
(paper clacks) Well, Rowdy Randy hitched a ride on the tumbleweed and traveled on.
"What's this," she said spotting the spunky horned creature through the cloud of dust.
"Ah ha, here's my chance to prove I am the best buckaroo this side of Cheyenne."
And Randy swooped down and she held tight for her eight second ride.
"Yee-haw," she shouted to the wind.
"I was born to buck."
(paper clacks) Well that Rowdy Randy, she was feeling fine.
She says, "I think I've proved my rumbling rodeo ways."
But had Randy finally met her match?
Because up ahead, there was a herd of shaggy beasts and she darted towards the head of the herd and it didn't even flinch.
She boldly looked that dangerous desperado in the eyes and said, "Are you gonna do something about it?"
Well, that brute, he answered with a stare down.
And that Randy, she's unshaken, but she zipped away 'cause she figured she better not press her luck.
(paper clacks) "There's plenty more wild West to explore," Randy buzzed weaving her way through the prairie grass.
And she zipped a quick stop when she heard a rattling sound that seemed to say, "Stay far away!"
And Randy, she heard many tales of this deadly creature.
And she said, "This is gonna be my greatest challenge yet."
And all that whooshing and all that buzzing only rustled up more of the creatures, slithery friends.
"Those stakes are high," Randy said.
"And I'm gonna rope them next time."
And off she zipped.
(paper clacks) And she was driven by her fierce hunger and her foolhardy pride.
And Randy, she grew more adventurous, some say dangerous with each encounter.
And this desperado, she had stirred up a heap of trouble along the way because now Randy had riled up a whole herd of wild-eyed rascals!
(paper clacks) Legs and the tails were everywhere.
And Randy hollered to the dust bowl.
"It's a full-blown stampede."
(paper clacks) Randy heard a "Woo, whoa," behind her.
"Oh, another fellow Bronco busters," Randy said approvingly.
"Because they've got grit and speed just like me."
And those wranglers, they rode hard.
And they commanded that whole stampede to a still.
(paper clacks) So Rowdy Randy wiped her brow.
She declared it was a hard work day done.
And she said, "I'm gonna sit for a spot and cool my saddle."
And she strummed the ballon and she gazed above at all the shining stars and sang.
♪ She was just a lonely cowgirl ♪ ♪ With her heart so brave and true ♪ And she sang to that restless Roman spirit as if to nobody else.
And the cow camp seem right peaceful now as Randy crooned.
(paper clacks) Well, she nearly lulled herself to sleep when the large leather glove came out of nowhere and it was headed her way.
"Is this how it ends?"
(paper clacks) (gentle music) Dun-da-da, off their sidekick.
Thank you for watching.
