Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipthe next episode in our 21 digital film series is now online the series examines a simple question of does where you live in the state affect how you live 21 profiles one person in each of our 21 counties and looks at the social determinants that affect that person's life the latest film introduces us to Middlesex County Celmira Cordero who understands the challenges faced by Spanish-speaking residents in New Brunswick an immigrant herself she now educates and empowers residents with resources to understand tenants rights the hope she imparts through the Esperanza neighborhood project epitomizes the power of community-driven change Brianna Vannozzi talked with salmira take a look Celmira Cordero thank you so much for giving us some of your time you have really become the voice of tenant activism in your community I find it really touching that you decided to go into this work because you yourself needed help when you came here from Peru not speaking English and not knowing your rights as a tenant but also as a community member right that is correct that information is correct because uh when I came to this country like a uh all of the immigrants came here we have to learn as soon as quick everything in this country uh so yes uh I had a bad experience like a tenant um my department was in bad conditions but even that I didn't know that I have a right and mostly of the time when I talked with a landlord they treated me about the Big Sean's finally I found a New Brunswick tomorrow with Esperanza project with Charles Bergman that person is very passionate with the community I learned too much with this project finally I execute my rights and now I'm trading all of the information with with the families with the same experience do you feel like you're giving hope to other members of your community yes um Esperanza means hope in English and this simple work for too many people means a lot because the families experience depression mental issues is not only with the other person's own inclusive with the kids what do you want to do next uh if God loves me um I would like to stay working in one family can learn something from the tenants right I know they can share to another families relatives or co-workers and then that voice pass around all of the people and I guarantee um in the future of this community knows what they have to do if something happened with with the legal evictions for example and you of course are raising your son and your family in New Brunswick buying a house there where you could have chosen to leave but you are so dedicated to your community Celmira Cordero Cordero thank you for taking part in our 21 series thank you so much for giving me the chance opportunity to share my experience wow what I learned in all of the years living in this blessed country that we like to see more people giving the Outreach to all of the families with this bad experience of all the tenants especially in this uh crisis houses that we are living in this in those years very well said Celmira thank you so much [Music]
