Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[piano intro] - [Announcer] "Southern Songbirds" is a production of PBS North Carolina, in partnership with Come Hear and See, a program of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
- Good evening, and welcome to the "Southern Songbirds Music Series," presented by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and the North Carolina Museum of History.
I'm Jim Lauderdale, and I'm excited to be your host for these three concerts spotlighting five exceptional North Carolina female artists.
It wasn't until 1952 with Kitty Wells's number one hit single "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" that a female solo artist claimed the title of country music superstar.
Since then, the many trailblazers that have forged a path for generations of women to follow is a growing and inspiring list.
We're grateful to have the opportunity to share some of them with you tonight and in following installations of these series.
Each one of these performers will captivate you with their unique style as they bring their personal and musical influences to the museum stage.
So without any further ado, it is my pleasure to kick off the "Southern Songbirds Concert Series" tonight with Charly Lowry, Caitlin Cary, and H.C. McEntire.
Enjoy the show.
[bright country music] Here's Charly Lowry.
[audience applauding] - I'm so honored to be here tonight, and wanna thank all of y'all for coming out.
I'm joined tonight by Jonathan Locklear.
You're in for a treat.
[audience applauding] [acoustic guitar music] And Jonathan and I come from the same place, so in Robeson County in Pembroke.
We come from a very tight-knit tribal community.
And it's a place where if something bad happens to one person, it affects many of us deeply.
And many years ago, a young lady by the name of Krista Dees was only 19 years old when she passed away in a car accident that took her life.
And I went on her Facebook wall, you know how we do in this age of social media, where we find out about a lot of our news, and just read the different comments from her friends and her family about her passing.
We'll miss you, Krista.
We'll look forward to the day of seeing you again.
And that got me to thinking about how at one point or another, all of us are gonna lose someone that we love.
And some of us already have.
I lost my mother to cancer in 2017.
And now when I perform this song, it takes on a totally different meaning from me.
It's a healing song, a medicine song, for anyone who's dealing with loss or grief or you're just longing for a spiritual connection with that person on the other side.

Good medicine, anytime I can just sing those words.
But here lately I've been performing a sequence of songs that do a great job of describing one of the lowest seasons of my life.
Many moons ago, and this is about to be a love story, okay?
I'm taking you on a love.
I write about love.
We know it has its ups and downs.
But many moons ago, after a night out with my lover and friends and acquaintances, I left feeling embarrassed, invisible, and disrespected.
And it forced me to write.
And these songs turned into some country songs and also turned to the country classics, okay?
Some of our classic country songs.

Well, my lover did what they did, and uh, I had the daily double of love causing me to feel more anger, confusion.
But one of the idioms that I grew up listening to my father say over and over with different things, anything pertaining to life, just several times, was we can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way.

And I know I sang a lot about love, but at the end of the day, it's gonna take a lot to knock Charly Lowry down, okay?
It's gonna take a lot to knock me down, 'cause I was born with a thing called backbone, and so were many of you.
All of you, actually, have a backbone, okay?
But this backbone is the one that you summon whenever you find yourselves down, down, down, deep in those dark places.
You gotta muster up the strength to pull yourselves up by the bootstraps and put one foot in front of the other and keep goin'.
In this song I mention three prominent gentlemen in the history of our country and the founding and the development and the continuation.
Benjamin Franklin, Dr. Martin Luther King, and also a Tuscarora outlaw from my neck of the woods by the name of Henry Berry Lowry.
Henry fought against several of the injustices that were being done against our people around the time of the Civil War when they were forcing our men to go build Fort Fisher in Wilmington.
And so I like to sing this song to pay honor of Henry as an ancestor of mine, for his resilience and his strength, and fighting for justice for the indigenous people in North Carolina.
