Hey precious, how are you?
- Hey, it is good to be here again.
Always good to be here.
- Good to have you back.
- Good to see you.
Thank you.
- Good to see you.
Now tell me, I know you've been pastoring.
Turn around that way.
You turn it all the way around.
There you go.
Now, you've been pastoring, you've been a pastor for quite some time, right?
- I have.
- How long?
- Well, you know, I was thinking about that last night, and I preached my first sermon in 1988.
So it's been 36 years that I have been doing pastoral ministry of some sort or another officially.
- Wow.
Well you graduated from Grambling, right?
- Yes.
Grambling State University.
- Grambling State University.
- Straight down on 20.
- Say it all.
- Amen.
- Now did you grow up in that area?
- I did.
I grew up in the town of Grambling.
The town is mostly the university but we still have a town.
- I got you.
I got you.
So did you ever meet the great coach Eddie Robinson?
- I did, yeah.
He lived on the other side of town, but when we were growing up, our church youth group would go and sing Christmas carols and we would just go knock on the door and he and his wife, Ms. Doris, they would come to the door and listen to us sing Christmas carols on Christmas Eve.
So, yeah.
- Did you know how historic he was when you went to his house at that time?
- I did.
I did.
- You were aware of that?
Okay, great.
- We're steeped in the history.
- Got you.
- They start us early and tell us.
- I got you.
That's something, we all have to have something to be proud of.
You know, God has given me a shoe shine ministry, so I got a chance to shine his shoes one time.
- Did you?
- I sure did.
We were in Atlanta, Georgia.
- Oh, that's, that's exciting.
- Yeah, with our late friend, Reggie Rutherford.
He had a trophy.
Reggie had a trophy called the Eddie Robinson Trophy, and so I got a chance to meet him and it was an honor.
He told a wonderful joke one time.
I'll tell you, it was a wonderful joke.
Pretty much.
So it was about this guy wanting to go to school but his daddy and mama told him he wasn't good enough.
And finally they had this guy with a crystal ball for all the football players.
And so the guy he was in the Robertson, in the back.
So by the time he finally got up there, the guy had run out of things to say good.
But the guy said, "I can see you're doing great things."
So he looked around at mom and daddy and said, "See?"
He said, "I hear people calling your name, they're calling you.
I see 'em, a lot of people calling your name."
So he said they really got proud.
He said, "They're calling your name.
You want to hear what they're saying?"
- What were they saying?
- Popcorn, hot dogs.
(laughs) - That's funny.
- Yeah.
I'm glad you laughed.
You got it.
Somebody might not have got it.
- Somebody was calling his name.
- Yeah, they were calling his name but he was- - Not for what he wanted.
- There you go.
But there's a message in there too.
As long as your name gets called means you're important 'cause some hot dog and popcorn, important.
- That's right.
- So we called your name and you said yes.
- I did.
- I'm so thankful.
I'm so thankful that you come.
Your music is different.
It's fresh and it's from the heart.
It's obvious.
Now what are you doing?
Tell me real quick.
They told me I had five minutes.
They're already gone.
- They are probably gone by now.
So I'm a chaplain full-time at St. Vincent's Downtown Hospital there- - In Birmingham.
- In Birmingham.
I am doing a combination of music ministry in pastoral care at two churches in the Birmingham area.
I am (clears throat) working on a thesis and writing and working on a degree.
La da da da da.
Life is full.
Can you tell I got a lot going on?
- I'm gonna tell you what, you got a lot of checks coming in too.
- Thank God for checks.
(laugh) - Alright, well listen.
- That will cash.
- That's important.
Well listen, we're so glad to have you back on "Alabama Gospel Roots."
We always have fun when we are talking, and certainly we appreciate you and the artistic expression that you have.
- Thank you.
- And it's growing bigger and bigger.
