Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipWhile fancy and my name is Sherrilyn, and I am here today to champion our public schools.
As a first time speaker.
You could say I'm more excited than a Republican trying to take away your lunch break.
I am more ready to go to Matt Bevin's ex-wife's.
I want to thank the Peyton Mix organizers today for giving me a chance to speak against constitutional Amendment two, or, as I like to call it, public enemy number one for public schools.
I stand here as a proud product of public education.
And now I stand here as a protector of our 634th thousand.
Public education students.
Public education is in my blood.
My mom taught for 27 years as an elementary teacher and Knox County schools.
So just like you here in Graves County, I understand the importance of public schools and our rural areas.
Amendment number two would allow Miles and her buddies in Frankfurt to shed dollars to support your schools here in West Kentucky directly to rich folks in the Golden Triangle so they could send their kids to private school.
This amendment is nothing more than a Hail Mary attempt to revive failed.
My policies, voucher policies that Kentuckians don't want, our students don't need.
And the courts have faithfully blocked.
This is not what we mean.
When we say we want more pro choice laws.
And to paraphrase Governor Beshear.
Vouchers came from here and we don't need em.
Legislators supporting this amendment.
Are the same ones who somehow thought that Frankfort and Paducah belonged in the same congressional district.
And speaking of Congress, I'd like to thank Jeremy Comber for being here today.
And Congressman.
Congressman.
I know it's hard watching.
Andy Beshear rise through the political ranks, but cheer up.
You have something he doesn't.
I lost to mad Bevin.
Congressman, I'm sure that you think about that 2015 loss a lot.
I do, too.
And I want to give a big shout out to those 83 Republicans who ultimately gave us the most popular.
Democratic governor in the country.
It was Matt Bevin who.
Gave us the sewer bill and vowed to stay just as much.
Vouchers are just the latest example of Republicans trying to shove their unpopular and unconstitutional schemes down Kentucky throats.
They will dry up our public schools, budgets and networks shutter their doors.
But hey, that's okay.
If you ask the supermajority, that's just more kids to put out on the job side.
What I want to make clear I am not against private schools.
They play an important part in our community.
And an important part to many Kentucky families.
However.
Public education is like public safety.
It is a shared responsibility, and we should not use public tax dollars to benefit the few at the expense.
Of the many.
So simply put, this is welfare for the wealthy.
Now.
I've had several teachers ask me how can we get more Republican support for public education?
I thought about it, but really the only things that I could think of our name in their schools after Donald Trump building a big, beautiful wall between the swings and the slides and making Tennessee pay for it, are declaring that the 2020 election for class president was rigged just last month.
Studies show that if we follow Florida's lead, vouchers will cost us more than $1 billion.
That's billion with a B.
And in Florida, families are using their vouchers for trampolines, TV's and Disney tickets.
It's kind of like voucher programs are going to a live taping of the Oprah show.
You get a car, you get a bike, and hey, really rich Republicans, you get a tax break.
I realize that we are all.
Here today for the White House, but this amendment is no joke.
So I want to emphasize that our public schools need more legislative support, not less.
