What the launch in Chicago could mean for future guaranteed income programs.

Applications for Chicago’s cash assistance pilot program have been open for a week and so far, the city says it has started more than 100,000 applications. Eligible applicants will be entered into a lottery to determine who will get $500 a month for one year. Ultimately, 5,000 households will receive checks in one of the largest tests of guaranteed income across the country.
