NOW THEY WONDER IF IT WAS RETALIATION FROM THE MAYOR AND CITY OFFICIALS ARE DEMANDING ANSWERS.
HEATHER JOINS US NOW WITH A LOOK AT THIS INCIDENT.
THE PERSON WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HERE, ONE OF THE LEADERS TO CONVINCE CITY OFFICIALS TO CUT TIES WITH COMMENT.
LET'S LISTEN TO WHAT ESTELLE TOLD CITY COUNCIL ABOUT THIS MIRROR THAT WAS BROKERED.
>> WE HAVE A MAYORAL CANDIDATE IN THE POLLS WITH NO POLITICAL GROUND TO STAND ON , AND ALSO PUT FORWARD A DRAFT FRANCHISE AGREEMENT FACING THE DEMAND PUT FORWARD BY THE COM AD CAMPAIGN AND ALDERMANIC CHAMPION.
>> WHO REMOVED HER FROM THE MEETING AND WHAT WAS THE REASON THEY GAVE?
>> THEY WERE REMOVED BY CHICAGO POLICE OFFICERS WHO THEY SAID WERE ACTING AT THE REQUEST OF THE SERGEANT AT ARMS WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SECURITY IN THE CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS.
THE SERGEANT AT ARMS REPORTS TO ALDERMAN MICHELLE HARRIS WHO IS A CLOSE LIGHTFOOT ALLEY WHO HAS BEEN IN CHARGE OF THE RULES COMMITTEE.
ALDERMAN HARRIS TOLD ME THAT SHE AND HER STAFF HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DECISION TO REMOVE ESTELLE FROM CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS SO IT IS UNCLEAR WHO ORDERED THE POLICE OFFICERS TO ACT.
>> YOU WERE THERE AND THERE IS TAPE OF THE MEETING.
IT DOESN'T APPEAR THAT SHE VIOLATED ANY RULES SO HOW DID SHE REACT?
>> THEY WERE SCARED AT FIRST AND THEN ANGRY.
THEY HAVE BEEN A LEADER IN THE CAMPAIGN TO CUT TIES WITH COM AD AND HAVE THE CITY FORMED ITS OWN MUNICIPAL UTILITY.
THEY WERE UNABLE TO WATCH THE DEBATE THAT ERUPTED WHEN MAYOR LIGHTFOOT INTRODUCED THE DEAL AND IT WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING.
>> THEY ARE A POLITICAL GROUP YEAR WITH PROMINENCE IN CHICAGO.
WHAT EXPLANATION DID YOU GET FROM THE MAYOR'S OFFICE AND THE CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT?
>> I GOT NO EXPLANATION FROM THE MAYOR'S OFFICE OR POLICE DEPARTMENT DESPITE REPEATED REQUESTS FOR COMMENTS AND THAT HAS LED ESTELLE AND THE DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS OF AMERICA TO CONCLUDE THAT IT IS NOTHING BUT PURE POLITICAL RETALIATION.
>> THE CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS ARE ALL PUBLIC AND RESIDENTS HAVE A RIGHT TO VOICE THEIR OPINIONS AT THE BEGINNING PORTION.
IS THIS POSSIBLY A FIRST AMENDMENT ISSUE?
>> IF THEY WERE REMOVED BECAUSE OF THE POLITICAL SPEECH THEY ENGAGED IN, IT WOULD BE A FIRST AMENDMENT VIOLATION AND A VIOLATION OF CITY COUNCILS RULES OF PROCEDURE.
THAT IS WHAT MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL WANT TO KNOW AND THAT
