A federal housing bill will become law tomorrow, borrowing a veto from President Donald Trump.

It includes provisions designed to build more housing and lower costs as local governments prepare to implement this law.

The National League of Cities is meeting in Louisville as leaders from across the country see how Kentucky's largest city is meeting the needs of its community.

Almost 200 local leaders arrived here in Louisville ready to shape national municipal policy, but also to learn from the innovative programs happening in this city, from its state of the art Emergency Services Center to the Botanical Gardens and the West Louisville Opportunity Center.

NLC leaders will have the opportunity to see firsthand how the City of Louisville is working on heat mitigation, workforce development, and public safety and transportation.

And this is what NLC does, bringing together local leaders to see promising practices that we can adapt to take back to our cities, towns and villages.

And here in Louisville, we're creating and preserving more affordable housing.

We're using evidence based tools.

We're working on a new initiative to create more permanent supportive housing to our home for For good initiative to support neighbors who are experiencing homelessness with Dignity Services and long term stability.

And we will also be learning how new legislation like the Road to Housing Act can be implemented in our neighborhoods.

The Road Housing Act.

It doesn't create new programs.

It doesn't add a whole lot of, additional federal action.

What it actually does, though, is it recognizes that the real decision making around housing is being done at the local level, and that it lightens a lot of the stipulations around how that money can be used and what we can do.

There's also a lot of language in there that directs decisions again instead of through states to us, directly to us.

It has been decades since America has, created a real focused piece of legislation around housing affordability, making sure that, the laws are simplified, identifying dollars that could be used by local, leaders to be able to, bring about, affordable housing.

And in this time, we really do need to show America that no matter whether you're Republican or Democrat, housing doesn't care about partizanship.

Housing is needed by all Americans.

And so this is a great moment that we're going to be able to see success around affordable housing in America.

The Road to Housing Act includes financial rewards for cities that successfully build more housing and their communities.
