Hello, but I'm Rob Munson.

Along with the coach, Mo McNally, former Gardner High School coach and two-time state champion as we get set to bring you what we think is going to be a clash of the Titans here between the two Class A powers, Coach McNally.

These two teams, you know, meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

<laugh> These two teams have gone back and forth and won in Class A championships in the past few years.

This is, uh, has got all the markings of a great, great field hockey game.

Scalhegan's number one in the north.

Shevers is number one in the south.

And, uh.

Just as we expected that they would be, uh, Coach McNally shaping up to be a fantastic championship game here as we see the North eight champions of Riverhawks.

13, zero, and two on the year.

They've scored goals by the bunchfold, 69 goals, 10 goals allowed.

This is how they got here.

Right.

If, if you take a look at, at Scowegan coming in here, I mean, they're the standard bearer of, of field hockey in the state.

Uh, Coach Doughty's in her 45th year.

They've scored 69 goals, you can see, and only allowed 10.

She's been in 20 of 28, uh, won 20 of 28 state championships over her, uh, over her tenure.

She's coming in with a freshman goalie though, Rob, so she's, uh, hasn't seen the likes of Chevers, that's for sure.

But they got in here with a, uh, beat Mount Airet in the, uh, final games of, of the North Regionals.

Well, when she talked about that goaltender, she said, "Hey, we got a kid 14 years old.

She's never played a goal.

Never played goalie until last July."

And then she didn't allow a single goal for us, and they did a three tournament game.

So Coach has great words to say.

She's seen some great goaltenders.

She calls her a magnificent, magnificent goalie.

Couldn't get better worse as a freshman from a 45-year veteran coach.

Oh, no question about it.

No question about it.

And, and, uh, because Skouhegan's got a potent offense.

Uh, and we, if we take a look at today's game, it's gonna be, uh, we're gonna take a look at what Scowegan does in the circle, in the, uh, offensive circle.

We're also gonna take a look at Shevris and see what they doing as a freshman goalie, but when you talk about, uh, state championships, you talk about championship games, you always talk about Scowhegan.

There's no question about it.

They are the standard bearer for programs, entire programs in the state of Maine.

Chevros, on the other hand, they're going for a three-peat.

Back-to-back championships in 23, 24 also won in 21.

So, uh, they have been a potent, uh, offense and defensive force, and for the past few years, they have been the team to beat.

They sure are.

Coach Andrea Masanti's coming in.

It's year two for her.

You can see the goal discrepancy.

Her teams have scored 87 goals, um, this season.

So you gotta know that that offense is potent.

They've only given up 13.

Um, they had a easy game in the quarterfinal.

Uh, little easy game in the semifinal of Gorham, although I saw a real tight game with Gorham during the middle of the season.

And then the regional final was 3-2 over Biddefit, and Biddeford's one of thos teams that's gonna give every - anybody a scare.

They're big and they're physical, but, uh, Chevers is up to the task, that's for sure.

And Chevers comes in with Ellie Skonekovich, I think.

It was a senior goaltender for them.

Um, Chevers has won three out of the five state championship appearances that they've been in.

And I, you know, as I say, Rob, I think it's gonna be a Pompio versus Mayo battle.

We're gonna see some 1V1s with those two in the middle of the field, and it's gonna be unbelievable.

So Skywig and Bass are gonna have to battle with Sheva scorers.

Um, and, uh, I think it's just a whale of a game.

And, uh, these games all day to day are gonna be great, but this one is gonna be a battle, I think.

Well, as we set it up, the clash of the Titans here, and, uh, statewide field hockey getting a good look at the stags.

They'll be down to our left.

They'll be wearing the dark uniforms.

So visitors from the Riverhawks.

They, uh, be going right to left on your screen here as we'll get set to go here.

And, you know, we'll get some of the keys to the games as well.

And, uh, we've talked about the, uh, the, uh, difference in goaltending.

The, the freshmen versus the upperclassmen as you see the young freshman.

You and I did a Skowhegan game this year as, uh, we covered them against Gardner and, uh, very impressed.

I think it was a four-row victory, uh, for Skowhegan and the young goaltender impressed, uh, very, very much as we said.

Michelle Williams, just the freshman.

You see her number four there, uh, for the Riverhawks.

Correct.

And I, you know, I think we take a look at players to watch today for Skowhegan.

Lillian Smith, who's been huge for them in these, uh, the first games coming up to this game.

Uh, Coach says that she's been player of the game for the Turney so far.

And, uh, they haven't been scored on, so in part to, uh, Lillian Smith.

And then you got Grace Mayo.

Grace Mayo is a Miss Maine field hockey finalist.

She's a KBCA player of the year.

I've seen her a couple times, and she's just, she possesses excellent 1B1 skills, wins most of those in the midfield.

Excellent speed and a rocket shot.

So, and then if we look at, uh, Chevrous, Joey Pompio has been their leader, their coach on the field for the last couple years, and is a top, one of the top midfielders in the state.

She's involved in all aspects of the game for, uh, for Chevrous.

And, uh, is an excellent passer.

And, uh, as I said, is like a coach on the field for them.

Then you've got the Brunell's sister, Cindy Bru - Sydney Brunell and Brooke Brunell.

Um, Sydney scored 13 goals and given has 13 assists.

And Brooke Brunel, a freshman, has, as a forwarder, scored 14 goals.

Coach says that they're, uh, Coach Musante says they're speedy.

They're dangerous anytime they get inside the circle.

So we're looking for some offensive output for them as well.

Well, they're here because the freshman Brooke Brunel, she scored the game winner.

402 into overtime on a finishing rush and gave the stags an unforgettable 3-2 victory here.

But they put that in the, uh, rear view mirror.

No time to look back.

Only look forward, and that's what we're looking forward to.

We're looking forward to a tremendous, tremendous field hockey game here in the Class A battle.

Uh, the Titans.

And beautiful, uh, conditions here to play the game.

The guards have blessed us with another perfect day.

55 degrees.

Sun looks like it's gonna poke through here for the second game, and conditions could not be better for a early November matchup.

I think if we look at a couple keys here, a wise man once said, "You gotta hold the Mayo."

<laugh> For Skowhegan, uh, for Chevros, they've gotta watch Grace Mayo.

They've.

Gotta - Now hold the mayo.

I was just downstairs.

I had some sandwiches.

I went, "Hold the Mayo.".

They've gotta, they have got to, for Chevers.

They've got to f - know where she is at all times.

Chevers has also got to control the midfield, which Joey Pompio is, is up to.

If you control the midfield, you control the tempo of the ballgame.

And they've got to put pressure on that, uh, freshman goalkeeper.

For Scowheagan, I'm not sure I agree with this one, but they're going to relish the underdog role.

I'm not too sure there are the underdogs, but I think that's where Coach sees it, and that's what she's telling her kids.

Um, they've got to limit shots on their own goalkeeper, so she's looking at her backs to play steady defense.

And then penalty corners are huge.

They're going to have to take advantage of those when they get them.

So those are the keys for today's game, and I think we're, as I said, I think we're in for a, uh, a very, very good -.

Yeah.

Scowheagon and an, an underdog, uh, have not been, uh, uttered in the same sentence - No.

Very often here as, uh, what is it?

20 championships that the Riverhawks have - Yes.

Have won, uh, since they began counting back in 1976.

And, uh, certainly they have been, uh, on a run, uh, particularly up through the early 2000s, and then reestablished themselves.

And, you know, th- th- these, uh, these two programs are heavyweights, that's for sure.

Scow Hegan has proven their, uh, you know, uh, powers over time, uh, when you take a look at the history of Maine High School field hockey.

And, uh, Paula Doughty has been there for that entire stretch of time.

And as we see the players enter the field and, you know, this, uh, this, this game could get a little, uh, uh, feisty, shall we say.

Uh - It could get a. Little chippy quick.

Coach, uh, McNally is, uh, I don't, I don't think there is, uh.

We're not gonna have any, uh, 19, uh, late '60s love-ins.

This is not the, uh, the, uh, the tower, the tower of love here.

<laugh> These two teams with respect for each other, but you know what?

They both want the same thing.

You're absolutely right.

I mean, there's a healthy respect with these kids.

There's no question about it.

We'll be able to go downstairs and pick up the pregame activities.

That kids have.

They, they, they're just absolutely talented, uh, beyond our imaginations.

And those of us, uh, like, uh, Mo McNally and I that were in education for like 50 years, uh, uh, continued just to be impressed.

And, you know, one of the things coach, you know, they said, "Well, kids are different nowadays."

No, they're not.

No, kids aren't different.

No, society's different.

But kids, they still want limits.

They, they still want discipline, and they still want to play the games that they love at a high level.

And there you go.

And that's what we've got here today.

Fantastic.

What do you expect out of the gate, uh, Mo?

Well, I, I. We're gonna see a great passing game.

Both these teams have, have a great passing game.

They use a short pass.

They use a long pass when it's there.

They release, uh, forwards up front in circles.

Both teams are very, very similar.

I think it's gonna be a battle of the Skouhigan backs keeping Chevers awake, but it's the Chevers scores on that freshman goalie.

So I think it's a Scowegan bags versus the Chevers goalies.

Yeah, the Brunel and Pompio and - Right.

And those players here.

The Chevers have been dominant all year long.

And, you know, Skowhegan, uh, thought to be, you know, uh, kinda building here a little bit.

It's a young team.

Just a couple of seniors and a f - and a freshman keeper.

And you know what?

Meet the ball, new boss, same as the old boss.

I think this is gonna be highly skilled too, Rob.

You're gonna see kids with superior stick work.

A lot of these kids on both sides of the ball play on, uh, play on all kinds of elite teams all over, all over New England.

So we're gonna see a really high skilled ball game as well.

So if you can step up on a diagonal and grab it, those interceptions are crucial.

So this is a team that's gonna up and coming as best you can with Scott League.

Um, top of, top-notch in the state of Maine, obviously.

She's been two t - A two-time national coach of the year.

And this is where Skowhegan's very dangerous.

You get them inside the 25, they sniff that goal area.

They put pressure on the inside of the circle, so anytime they get the ball in the circle, they're very, very dangerous.

Well, we talked about the Skowhegan dynasty and Chevrous looking to create their own dynasty here, you know?

I, I went to that new app, they got that chat.

Something P or something like that.

And I said, "Define dynasty."

And they said, "Scouhegan and Chevrous field hockey.".

Seriously.

Yeah.

And they tell me that app knows everything, so I believe them.

<laugh>.

Well, th- that's absolutely the case.

I mean, Chevrous is kind of an upstat.

They're 16-0 and one coming into this game.

They're only tied to Biddeford.

Uh, Biddeford Shevers game is like a kunegarden game, like.

Uh - Yeah.

Skywigan Massilonski game.

So they come in, uh, they come in as a young upstart.

But their program is solid.

They've been solid for the last, uh, 10 years now.

So in terms of north versus south, you've got the best two programs.

Uh, one of, two of the top two teams in, in, uh, both the north and the south.

But Chevros is kind of the upstart, and they had a, you know, a couple state championships.

Three out of five were 21, 23, and 24.

So.

On the run here.

That was a quick reset.

She came out, made a risky play, but.

You know what, Rob, too?

That, that's a freshman in goal, but that's a college play.

Yeah.

See high school kids play, make high school goalies making those plays very often.

I've only seen a couple goalies in the last two years that, uh, that make a play like that and make it successful.

Well, when you're 45 year veteran coach both for a marvelous, marvelous goalkeeper.

That's not one marvelous, that's two marvelous.

<laugh> Seeing a little bit of the breakup here.

I'm not sure if she got a piece of it.

Anytime it ties a circle too, when you're creating these corners, it has to be cat quick passes.

That ball was dangerously loose.

That was a great save by Williams.

I didn't see her get a piece of it before, but she got a piece of that initial shot.

Had to crutch down low to be able to see it come through.

Sometimes those goalkeepers make what I like to call positional saves because they go to the right area.

They can't see the ball, but they know where the, where the hole is.

That's right.

And they go to cover it up and they get over there and it hits them.

And the other central, essential piece to that is that once she's down, she's gotta get up before that next shot comes in.

Off the deflection, I think.

Inside, we'll see who they credit the goal.

I think it's Brooke Brunell, but we'll see.

So we knew that they were gonna be part of this, uh, and they're both coming back.

They'll need to try to reestablish the offensive zone.

This is an unusual position for Skylighton to be playing defense that long.

Um, we took a look.

I was talking to Coach Galant who's keeping our stats for us this game.

Looking at strength of scheduling too.

And I think, uh, i- if you look at the teams that these, both these teams play, the schedule in the south right now I think is a little tougher than the schedule in the north.

When you're playing the Biddefield and Thorntons, the Gorhams, um, a couple times.

Whereas in the North, I don't think the schedule is quite as tough.

Scott Hegan plays out of the Kennebeck Valley Athletic Conference and they play a mix of A and B school.

Right.

It's a kick out save.

There's a trick and fraction.

You can see it right here.

Incidental, but they, they don't worry about, uh, well, maybe <laugh> any little tug there.

So Brunell with the goal.

I was telling you, Rob, before we started, the, uh, I was down to Chevers, watching Chevers Gorm game, um, earlier in the season.

And I can tell you how much these teams respect each other.

We had a crowd of Gor - uh, Chevers people right beside me.

This was, again, mid-season, and they were already talking about Skalhagan and the Skyling game.

So this has been an expected outcome for a long, all season long for these teams.

Of course, Benford had some say to that, took the stags of overtime with 3-2 victory.

One of those instant classics.

Oh, sure was.

Chevers had to come back in that game.

They were down two goals.

They were down to nothing.

That's right.

Came back to the tie and And then Brunel and Brooklyn now in overtime.

Lowering down up the fast, uh, near side.

One thing you see in this game that's a little bit different than the game we just saw is the speed of this game.

This game's just a couple steps faster than the last one.

See, most teams will play that ball forward, but they like to play it back and get a -.

It shows you how.

Change your field a little bit.

Exactly.

It shows how confident you are in your backs too.

If you're at the 25 yard line, you play it backwards, you're taking a chance.

But if you've got, if you're confident in the backs you've got back there, that certainly opens the field.

You're absolutely right, Coach.

The important stat, you take a look at penalty corners and offensive opportunities.

Sherris has had four.

Skowegan, highly unusual, has had no corners in the first half.

No shorts on corners in the first half.

Both goalies have had two saves and have coup - come up big.

They've big, been big saves.

So it's important, I think, for Skowhegan this second half to create some offensive opportunities.

So how do you do that?

I mean, do you, do you - Well, I think you- You gonna take some chances, gonna move some more people up a little bit, try to get Mayo up - Well, I don't know that.

More offensively than defensively, uh, in the second half.

You're absolutely right.

Grace Mayo's gotta get involved here.

As you said, we haven't heard her name much, and she's gotta get involved.

And I s - noticed that when the half started that Coach Doughty was down there talking to her, um, in terms of, it looked like positioning.

I'm not sure exactly what it was, but she's gotta get more involved.

And her getting involved means the ball's gonna go up the field more.

And as we said, and you've heard me say a number of times, Rob, whoever controls the midfield usually wins that section.

So what happened in the first half is Joey Pompio controlled the midfield for showers.

Yes.

And when she does that, they've got more opportunities.

So what has to happen for Scott Hegan is Grace Mayo and her midfielders have gotta control or get more control into the midfield to create the push going up towards the circle.

Tough, tough, tough assignment, but it's gotta happen.

Well, slow Nekovecan goal has really only had the one, uh, real big save when she came out sprawling and, uh, deflected the ball away.

Other than that, she's, uh, had a pretty clean, uh, game as her defenders have done a good job.

And of course, as we said in game one, your best offense, I mean, your best defense is a good offense.

And we've seen the, uh, field tilted in favor of the Sags.

They've been up on, uh, on the end of the, uh, uh, offensive zone and keeping the ball away from, uh, the, uh, defensive end.

So that's the way to play defense.

Have a good offense.

Uh, you, you heard, uh, Ethan's comments, uh, downstairs, uh, with Coach, uh, Musante, and she was, uh, saying, "Hey, this is Kohegan.

We, we, we gotta be aware."

So there's a lot of players that are looking to play at the college level too.

So that tells you a little bit about the skill level of this, these two teams and the, the game they're playing.

And she's a highly skilled 1V1 player.

She's got good defense.

I noticed on the last Scouhegan run too, she's always coming back to double up on the play with the ball.

Um, so she doubles up with her backs.

It creates a very tough defensive matchup.

The defense there stepping up after Pompio beat her first offender.

That was Lillian Smith with a good defensive play.

And now gets one on that, that's a kick out saved by Williams in a good one.

If you go back to that kick from Williams too, uh, one of the things that's a highly, uh, highly respected skill for goalkeepers, that kick wasn't just Kickkat haphazardly.

Well, between the break, uh, you noted that Coach Paula Dowdy words for her star, Grace Mayo.

Not that you would have to tell Grace it's time to step up, but she has, she's got the goal to get him back in this, but a young team needs that type of leadership.

She's the senior, one of the two seniors on the team.

Well, and I think Coach would, Coach would agree that probably Grace Mayo's that second coach that she's got on the field.

And you're right, with all those underclassmen on the field, it's gonna take you two seniors to step up.

Well wide of the goal in out of bounds.

McCotney trying to get the possession to set things up offensively and good defensive work there.

They don't let Skalhigan dribble very long before it's contested.

There's a Shevers kid right beside, right in front of her, trying to, uh, disrupt the dribble.

So they're playing tight defense, even in the offensive end.

I think she tried to go through her legs.

They three beat.

They beat the Riverhawks of Skauhegan.

And a classic game, three to two, just when it looked like we were going over the overtime.

Jaylee Radford, on a scramble in front, gets the game winner her second goal of the game.

And the Stags in the hard fought game will be crowned 20, 25 state champions.

And they have earned this victory here as a two-nothing lead dissipated to a 2-2 tie and a, what we were thinking was gonna be overtime.

But the Stag said, "You know, we got a little left in the tank."

<laugh> A little left in the tank.

And after the tying goal, they put it to an offensive thrust and get the Railey Radford goal.

Well, I think Joey Pompio took control of that series that went down - She certainly did.

That last goal and, uh, you saw the senior leadership come through.

She went down 50 yards down, got the ball into the circle, which set up that, uh, that goal at a later time.

But didn't you think that this was gonna be this type of game, Rob?

I mean, with these two powerhouses, we knew it was gonna be a classic for the ages, and it certainly was.

Congratulations of both teams.

A great played game here today and worthy of a championship effort.

It started great.

For the Staggs, a beautiful rendition of the national anthem right there.

<laugh> She belted run out and.

<laugh> It was nothing but high sky for the rest of the game for the Stags, but they had to withstand a flurry a second half as Mo McNally told you the Riverhawks will come out in the second half, and yes, they did.

Got the penalty stroke to make it 2-1.

Got the tying goal 2-2.

And when it looked like overtime, nope, Stags.

Came back.

Radford's second goal of the game.

We'll be getting set to go down to the field level for award ceremony, and we'll be able to pick up the house mic for that.

You know, this is a tough time for, for kids, you know?

It, it reminds me of a great lyric from a great Billy Joel song, Summer Highland Falls, where he wrote, "We are always what our situations hand us.

It's either sadness or euphorias.".

Well, it is.

And this is tough.

I mean, this is tough for Coach Doudy and her team to get back on that bus head to Skowhegan to play a game this tough.

To get to this point, you know, in time, you know, in time, they'll realize that they're only one of two teams that got to this point.

What's going through your mind at that point?

Well, we have had to fight to get here, so that's.

I knew that they were gonna know how to fight and do it and come through.

We've been practicing that, um, all season, especially in post-season.

So I had a lot of faith in them.

Talk about Jaylen Radford for a second.

She had two goals today, and the game winner there was just a little under two minutes to go.

Younger team this year, but they've had, had a lot of influence over the years.

Just talk about the team in general this season.

Obviously got a blemi- blemish early on in the season to Biddeford, tied, and then haven't had a blemish since.

Talk about this, how the season has gone leading up to this game.

Yeah.

I mean, these girls were made for this.

Um, a lot of them have experienced being on this big stage, and I do think that matters.

Um, but you're only as good as your seniors, and my seniors came through strong today, and they lead these girls so well.

Um, great leadership, great captains.

Um, we've got, um, great younger kids that came through for us, like Jaylee and everything, and Brooke in the last game.

And then we've got Joey Pompio, who I think is the best player in the state.

Well, Coach, congratulations.

Chevers had a wide, four wide shots during the game, and Scott Hegan had one.

Both Goalies did a great job.

Had great saves during the game.

Scott Heagan's goalie had four.

Uh, Shaver's Goalie had, uh, Scott Heagan's goalie had five saves.

Um, Shevers Goalie had four corners.

Shavers came up with nine.
