Welcome to "Songwriters Under the Covers" with me, Victoria Shaw.

I am your dance instructor for the night.

And tonight we are actually shooting this in Nashville, Tennessee, at the famous Listening Room Cafe.

I am so happy to be here.

I wasn't sure we were going to make it, but I'm so glad we're here.

And I have the most amazing friends, hit songwriter friends tonight as my guest.

I always tell how this this works, but we're in season two now, which makes me very cool and hip.

And I'm hoping that you've seen the show and you know how it works, but just in case for the three people out there who's watching who hasn't seen the show, I invite my very successful hit songwriter friends to come and play their hits or play new songs, tell us the stories behind them, and then we go home.

It's really very simple.

We just go round and round.

We have a lot of fun, and tonight is no exception To my left, I'm going to start with him.

Oh, my God.

My -- my friend here is a songwriter, okay?

But not like a songwriter.

He's like a songwriter.

And give you an example.

He has had over 1,000 songs recorded.

Impossible.

Impossible.

Not like 1,00 songs written, 1,000 songs recorded.

He has had countless hits singles, and he has an astounding 15 number one songs.

His songs have been featured in TV shows and commercials and movies.

He's had multiple awards, and in 2007 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

He -- yeah, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

He even has a star in the Nashville Walk of Fame.

Yes.

And in 2017, he received the prestigious BMI Icon Award, which is unbelievable because it's a very small group of people that get to have this award.

He's in the company of people like Paul Simon, Carole King, Al Green, Brian Wilson.

I mean, it is and it's impossible.

It's really quite astounding.

And he never lets me forget that.

My dear friend, my brother, Bob DiPiero.

And my next guest is also a dear friend, and I'm so happy to have him here.

He is a songwriter, a musician, a producer, a multi-instrumentalist and an actor.

In 1989, he burst onto the country music scene and turned it upside down with his debut album, "Killin' Time."

I'm still talking about you.

More of a flurry, really.

No, it was it was upside down.

It was a flurry.

With his debut album "Killin' Time," which produced four straight number one songs right off the bat.

All in all, he has had, or should I say so far, he has had 22 number one songs.

[ Cheers and applause ] Along the way, he's earned dozens of awards, hence all the gold, I mean, gold and platinum albums, hence all the awards, the ACM awards, the CMA Awards.

Of course, he has a Grammy.

He's a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

And this year, I believe it's the 30th anniversary of the debut of "Killin' Time," and this guy is still killing it.

We love our deep cuts, we artist do.

Songwriters, not so much.

That's less royalties.

Right?

But as the guy writes all my own songs, I don't play favorites.

I really love this song.

I wrote it with a real hack out of Nashville named Frank Rodgers.

You may have heard of him.

He's a hack.

If you knew, Frank, you'd knew why I have to say that.

He's a really talented guy, songwriter, producer.

We wrote this song based on something that I've always said as kind of a smart alecky response when people would ask, "How are you doing?"

And my response was always, "I've been better, but I've been worse," which I learned is not that bad, really.

You can end up in the middle somewhere.

I think you ought to count yourself lucky.

This is a song, "Better and Worse," is a rhyme that comes up again and again and again throughout the song.

So much that I thought we were going to run out of...

I knew we were going to run out of them.

We didn't.

And in fact, I've learned after we recorded it that there are actually still more out there.

[ Laughter ] I got to say, before I start playing, Clinton and I I played this show in the heart of country music, Belfast, Ireland.

This feels like Belfast, doesn't it?

[ Laughter ] It was an amazing show.

Country music's big there.

Country music is.

It wasn't big that night, but it was -- [ Laughter ] It was pretty cool.

They were excited about who was coming next week, weren't they?

Oh, man.

No kidding.

So I'm a world famous songwriter, which means most of you don't know who I am, and that's okay.

My accountant knows who I am.

That's the main thing.

I grew up in Ohio, north eastern Ohio.

Yeah, Youngstown, Ohio up there, and I played rock and roll bands, you know?

That's what I did.

I played guitar and rock and roll band for longer than I should have, and I moved to Nashville.

And I started hitting streets, doing the thing, knocking on doors, meeting people, finally got some people interested in my songs and I started writing songs.

And my first song ever got recorded was -- There's a brand new artist, I'll tell you how long ago it was.

My publisher called me up and said, "Hey, you got yourself a song recorded."

I said, "Great.

Who?"

"Oh, Let me see.

It's a new artist.

Her name is Reba."

Now, at the time, Reba was not Reba.

She was Reba.

Now she's Reba.

[ Laughter ] So this was fantastic.

I was in the game, and it went up the charts and it went all the way to 20, which was a big hit in my book.

And then the money came in after nine months.

It's kind of like being pregnant.

You know, after nine months, something exciting happens.

The money shows up.

So this check shows up in my mailbox, and I did what any red blooded American Electric guitar player did.

I spent every penny of it.

I bought everything I didn't have and I didn't have anything.

I bought a Sony color TV, I bought two Sony color TVs in case, I bought a Nikon camera, I bought a a video game, I bought everything.

And nine months later, like being a little bit pregnant, I realized I had made a miscalculation mathematically.

I had forgot to put money aside for Uncle Sam.

So I'm sitting in my kitchen looking at the Nikon camera sitting in a corner over there.

I probably took four pictures, and my Sony color TV is over there and I'd already lost the videogame in a card game.

And I'm thinking to myself, "What should I do?

What should I do?

Write another song?

Yeah, I think I'll write another song."

So this song I wrote is my first number one.

The song is a bit suggestive, so I had to just put out there.

Yeah, that's, you know, first time I got Lisa to duet with me, it was a song I wrote in the kitchen over a couple of days and I got her singing along with me, and she had no idea I was writing it for us when I said I do.

But came our first duet together, and getting her to do anything related to that was like pulling teeth.

You know, it's going to be a single, We're going to do "The Tonight Show" "I'm not doing The Tonight Show."

Every single thing that we did until she went on stage with me in Dallas and 20,000 people made her feel welcome and she really realized that it was okay for her to be doing that.

And then I couldn't get her off the stage after that.

But that song went to number one.

I went to number one, and did a funny thing that songs don't often do.

It went to number two and then went back to number one.

It hadn't had enough.

And so I thought it would be fun.

We started working on this idea to write a song about who we are all these years later.

We're coming up on 29 years of marriage this fall.

Well, this is the part of the show where I like to bring up another special guest, and lately I've been doing more kind of emerging artists that maybe you've never heard of or you're just beginning to hear of who are going to be tomorrow's iconic songwriters.

And this woman is no girl, woman, young woman.

I don't know what they say.

No exceptions.

She is, first of all, loved in this town.

Everybody loves her.

She has worked so hard.

And I was Wikipediaing her and I actually learned something new.

I learned that when she was 16, she was in a Bruce Springsteen cover band called the B Street Band.

Okay, that was very cool.

Since then, she's written and released multiple singles.

She's one of those artists, again, that you can't put in a box.

She's mixes country with progressive rock with soulfulness in it, And she's so pure and true.

And I'm not the only one that thinks so.

As a matter of fact, Kelly Clarkson had her go on tour with her last year.

So she yeah, it's a big deal.

[ Cheers and applause ] I also Googled this, too.

NPR hailed her as what's next in Nashville.

"The Washington Post" labeled her one of the music's rising storytellers, and Rolling Stone included her album "Change the Whole Thing" as a must have, along with Macy Gray and Prince.

Very cool.

Yes.

She's performed at Bonnaroo, CMA fest and has appeared on the Grand Ole Opry over 50 times.

It's amazing.

This is my favorite part.

"Vogue" magazine has called her an IT girl and "Glamour" magazine calls her sophisticated and flawless.

I just call her my friend.

And since this is a PBS program, the best documentary about Muscle Shoals is one that they produced, and I made a batch of songs with some of the folks from Alabama Shakes and some of the historic musicians from that area and people from my band.

And it's a big, big, diverse crowd that came together and made this project.

And this song in particular, I think has taken on so many new meanings, like all songwriters are feeling with what we're going through.

It's very good, according to me.

And I would encourage you to get it.

Actually, by the time you're seeing this at home, it's probably out and you know how good it is.

This is a song that I wrote with another Nashville hack, Steve Wariner, or as I call him, Strummer.

He came over to the house just to show me his new guitar because he kept forgetting to bring it every time he came over for some other reason.

So you have to just bring your guitar over, So he brought over his new Gretsch, and we were admiring that.

And I told him -- I just told him this new idea I had and told him the idea and said we should write that, which we always say.

And and he said, yes, we should.

And so I just launched into writing it right there.

We were standing around no paper or anything.

And before you know it, we had a verse chorus going and and in between writing lines, I'm texting musicians and my engineers seeing who's available.

Within about five days, We were recording that song.

Got it all finished up and the quarantine hit.

And I was able to deliver it as a late edition to the new album right on the day of the deadline.

It just barely made it onto the record.

And it's a song that I really, really wanted to for all my friends of many different persuasions, all my fans, everyone I know who, you know, each looks at things in their own way.

Wanted to write a song that would be true to all of them, all of you as Americans.

Even some of my Canadian friends love this song.

And they might not admit it, but they do.

This is called "America (Still In Love With You.")

It's amazing I could get them on, but I'm really glad that we all came together.

It basically sucked, so we gave it up.

We just gave it up and I said, "Well, hey, man, come on an hour before I go to lunch, let's try this.
