[laughs] We had a goal of reaching 100 gallons worth of acorns.
We didn't necessarily know how many acorns that would be until we got them all collected.
And we actually surpassed that amount and got about 110 gallons.
And so that came out to about 55,000+ acorns.
So for our project, we aren't specifically collecting in Duluth, even though that's where we bring all the trees back.
We are collecting in a range of up to 250 kilometers south of here.
[music] How I'd be looking is moving things around, turning things over.
Probably wouldn't pick this one.
It's too green.
The idea to start collecting southern genetic tree seeds came out of UMD research.
Trees that were taken relative southern and planted north, they tended to do better compared to their northern counterparts.
They kind of held on to their leaves longer.
They had a little bit better growth.
[music] My favorite thing about this project, these aren't just acorns.
These are little beings.
These are lives.
And there's like thousands of them that's just passing through my hands.
It's a very, like, indirect good feeling that I, I helped in some little way.
