Today we bring together our graduates, along with the families and friends to honor you and your accomplishments.
We gather today while being mindful that our community is still mourning the violence experienced on February 13th.
It may feel uncomfortable to celebrate, but we are dedicated to supporting everyone who was impacted by the events, including students who were injured, witnesses to the violence and families of those who were injured or passed.
As we begin to shift to a celebration of your accomplishments, let's pause for a moment of silence to consider how we can live our lives in a way that honors all Spartans, including those who are no longer with us.
Thank you.
Please be seated.
On behalf of the MSU Board of Trustees, I welcome all the graduates, families and friends who are with us at this evening's undergraduate commencement.
Today's ceremony represents the culmination of disciplined intellectual work and creative imagination.
Certainly no small accomplishment.
Many of you and your family is here today.
The sacrifices have been long and great.
The degree you have earned acknowledges your successes and honors those who have encouraged it.
Our wish is that you will always be leaders who generously use your intelligence and your knowledge to improve the quality of your community and to advance the common good and to renew the hope in human spirit.
Our faculty, administrators, and the MSU trustees are very proud of you.
Please accept our warmest congratulations and best wishes.

So tonight you become Alumni of the College joining over 56,000 others worldwide, 56,000.
Like those before you, you will leave a unique mark on this campus.
This is a day you will never forget.
The day you put on the green robe and graduated from MSU.

You'll achieve great things in the years to come.
Now, please direct your attention to the screen as we take a look back at your time at MSU and showcase some of your most memorable moments.
(upbeat music begins) (applause) The world needs more grace.
I strongly believe the world needs more grace.
So you are class of 2023.
Know a thing or two about grace.
During your time at MSU, you experienced many adventures including the twists and turns caused by covid.
One day we were in person the next day online, then hybrid, then online.
And as we made our changes, we asked you for your grace and you graciously obliged.
So what is grace?
To answer the question I did what every student would do.
I asked chatGPT.
(crowd laughing) So we have many generations in the audience today, and if you haven't heard of chatGPT, it's a super smart computer program that has learned all the information available on the internet and can answer any question.
So when I asked chatGPT, what is grace?
It said, grace is a quality that can be difficult to define, but we all know it when we see it.
Hmm.
So how does that help me?
I wasn't very sure.
So I took chatGPT's advice and asked it to show me examples of grace that I could see.
By seeing, I thought I could learn about grace.
It gave me 10 influencers and social media celebrities.
They were beauty and lifestyle influencers, fashionistas branding and marketing experts, essentially like the Kardashians and the Jenners.
They all had millions of followers and offered great tips about makeup and fashion.
And if you're wondering why I look so fashionable today in my cap and gown credit, the fashionistas.
I was hoping for more from chatGPT and asked for a dad joke about grace.
It gave me this, why did the tomato turn red?
Because it saw the salad dressing, gracefully tossed of course, it added.
I chuckled and told chatGPT, even for a dad joke that's pretty bad.
ChatGPT seemed hurt by my insensitivity.
It apologized for the previous joke not being up to your standard it said.
Here is another one it offered.
Why did the chicken cross the road with grace?
To get to the other side without causing any fuss.
So by now, I knew chatGPT had, had its limitations.
Actually, chatGPT was quite brilliant.
When I entered well-formulated prompts, it gave me a beautiful speech in 30 seconds, that would've taken me hours to write, and you wouldn't have guessed that a computer wrote it.
Yes, it was cliched and predictable, but it had all the ingredients, quotes, compelling stories, inspiring words, and polished language.
With some cajoling I finally learned from chatGPT that grace is the quality of being kind, forgiving and compassionate, kind, forgiving and compassionate.
So as you embark on life in the real world, I hope you practice kindness, forgiveness, and compassion.
ChatGPT gave me many transformative leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela, Princess Diana, and even Mr. Rogers.
They're all examples of the power of grace.
But you don't have to look at famous people.
Just look in the rafters to your grandparents, parents, family, and friends.
I'm sure you'll find living examples of grace, ordinary people who are kind, forgiving, and compassionate following their footsteps, the footsteps of your everyday hero.
Also use your secret superpower, which is Communication.
As a graduate of our College, you have learned how to communicate.
Put it to good use.
ChatGPT gave me a brilliant nugget that was new to me.
It offered an encouraging verse from the scriptures as part of the script, which says, let your conversations be full of grace, seasoned with salt.
Let your conversations be full of grace.
Listen well, and choose your words wisely.
Use your words to lift people up, not to put people down.
As instruments of peace, not as instruments of war, to harmonize and not sew discord.
In a deeply polarized, dysfunctional, and fractured world.
Your conversations filled with grace can be the bond.
Also, remember to season your conversations with salt.
That's not a license to use salty language, quite the contrary.
In this context salt is used as a preservative and seasoning agent.
The preserving power of salt is a pointer to the lasting impact of words.
And the seasoning power of salt is a pointer to add spice to your language.
So seek out conversations that can have a lasting effect by being bold, creative, and caring in your choice of words.
Maya Angelou said, people will forget what you said.
People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.
Practice kindness, forgiveness, and compassion in your conversations to create positive feelings in others.
In closing, here are some lessons to take with you.
One make chatGPT your best friend.
You must learn to coexist with AI, chat bots and robots they are coming for your jobs and are wickedly smart.
Two, fashionistas, don't have the final word on grace.
Look to your everyday heroes instead.
My everyday hero is my Mom who is near the end of her life.
As a school teacher in a hot, humid, and bustling city of Chennai in South India, she cared for kids from poor fishing families.
She carried herself with grace, making many sacrifices for our family.
The mothers and grandmothers in our audience can easily relate to her, and an early mother's day to mothers and grandmothers in our audience.
And my Mom loved words.
Inspired me to write, encouraged me to use rhyme and metaphor, to dream and to care for those who were overlooked.
She showed me how to use encouraging words.
She taught me how to season my words with salt.
This is my last commencement as your Dean.
I'll miss our students and community of faculty and staff.
It has been a privilege to serve you.
As you set out to follow your dreams.
I'll leave you with this encouragement.
Let your conversations be full of grace, seasoned with salt.
(applause) Thank you.
Now let's celebrate our everyday heroes, your community, your team of ardent fans who have stood beside you in your highs and lows.
They're here today to cheer you on.
So on this special day, let's thank your family and friends who are here.
Let's begin by acknowledging our Grandparents and Great Grandparents in the audience.
Would you please stand and remain standing if you can.

It is now my pleasure to introduce Christian Parker, a Communications senior who will speak on behalf of the Class of 2023.
Christian?
(applause) - Thank you, Dean David.
Hello, Spartans, students, faculty, friends, and families.
It is so amazing to be sharing this moment with you all.
My name is Christian Parker, and I am a student, no, a graduate of MSU'S College of Communication Arts and Sciences.
(cheering) I am graduating with a degree in Organizational Communication and a minor in Sales Leadership.
This is truly a surreal experience to be speaking at the graduation of one of the most prestigious universities in the country, representing a unique cohort of esteemed individuals from one of the most prestigious programs in the world.
And let me preface with this, if something I say resonates with you, feel free to clap, snap, throw up a hand, whatever support looks like to you.
Okay?
This will be a lot more fun with your interaction.
To the family's friends and faculty who have supported this journey, I would first like to give you this moment of gratitude.
This celebration could not possibly have come to fruition, if not for your support.
On behalf of the com art sci graduates to all of you, thank you for investing in our futures.
We will make you proud.
(applause) To my fellow classmates, you've done it.
(cheering) I think it's fair to assume that for most of us, these past few years have been some of the most challenging of our lives.
Leaving home for the first time, making new friends, navigating tough courses, and maybe hitting Harper's at night before an 8:00 AM.
We're we're graduating.
I think we can admit it now.
All jokes aside, it is so crazy to reflect on all that we've experienced during our time here at MSU.
I mean, College is inherently challenging by nature.
This cohort, however, has experienced a myriad of challenges that no one could have possibly prepared for.
Just as we were starting to figure this whole College thing out, a global pandemic disrupted everything we knew and we went virtual.
This, of course, took some getting used to, but as always, Spartans persevered.
Eventually, we returned to campus and a sense of normalcy returned.
But our community was again challenged by the unimaginable tragedy on February 13th.
While we will forever remember what we experienced that day, I will also never forget how over the following weeks, the Spartan community came together in ways big and small.
Through incredible resilience, we were able to lift each other up and push forward leading us to the present.
(applause) After February 13th, leadership and administration researcher at the University of Illinois, Dr. Victor Simon, who also happens to be my best friend's dad.
He shared this quote, adversity doesn't build character.
It reveals it.
Now, if that quote is true, watch out world, because we are ready for whatever may come.
While he, yeah, clap and clap for yourself.
Y'all did that.
While it may be scary to think about the real world, it cannot possibly be any more real than what we have persevered through during our time here.
If nothing else, these past four or so years are proof of the resilience that lives inside each of you.
Against all odds here we are together.
So let today be a celebration because you are so worthy of being celebrated.
Though I'm around the same age as most of you students and hardly the most experienced person in the room, I did learn a thing or two about resilience through adversity growing up in Flint, Michigan.
While I recognize that my experiences are personal, I do hope you find value in these three key takeaways that have helped me be resilient in the face of challenge.
Y'all still with me?
All right.
First, become a lifetime learner.
I know, I know many of us are here to celebrate the end of our journey as a student, but truthfully, this is just the beginning.
In your growth journey, it is important to surround yourself with people who are different than you.
Leveraging our community knowledge allows us to stumble, learn, and grow together.
By committing to a lifetime of curiosity, you are positioning yourself with the resilience to overcome whatever challenges may come down the pipeline.
That leads me to my second point.
Success is not linear.
Okay, show of hands.
How many of you would consider yourself a perfectionist?
I think there's probably a few more out there.
I know I could say it about myself.
All right.
I understand that we all wanna put our best selves forward 24/7, but sometimes that's just not feasible.
We will each inevitably run into obstacles that seemingly prohibit us from meeting our goals.
However, keep in mind that even just one step forward is progress.
Sometimes you may even have to take a few steps back, but this may be the tension needed to launch you forward in the pursuit of your goals.
(cheering) This may be the tension needed to launch you forward in the pursuit of your goals.
Facing challenge head on and embracing adversity is integral to building resilience.
Finally, and in my opinion, the most important point of all, find your why.
I want you to consider for a moment what comes to mind as I ask these questions.
What motivates you?
What helps you get out of bed in the morning and inspires you to be better each day?
This is your why.
For me, that motivation comes from my friends and family, my village.
To my little sisters Cadence, Zakaria and Natalia.
It is inspiring to know that you were looking up to me as a role model.
It is inspiring to know that my people look to me as a resource.
This is what keeps me rooted.
When the storm comes, which it surely will.
Your why will be the roots that keep you from being washed away.
Ultimately, it is your resilience that has brought you this far, and I hope these three points will help you as you continue forward on your path.
When you walk off this stage, you will join the longstanding legacy of MSU Alumni where greatness is not an anomaly, but the standard, despite the cacophony of voices saying what we can't do today, it's a testimony to what you can do.
So we mm, (applause) We are Spartan strong.
With the Spartan's will, Spartan's will, thank you.
(applause) - We train our Communication students to communicate.
Thank you, Christian.
