Today marks an important milestone in your education and we share your pride as we celebrate your achievement.
Next year, many of you will begin your year long teaching internship.
Others have elected to enter graduate school.
And some of you will embark on your first career experience.
Never have the fields of education and kinesiology been more exciting and challenging.
Your education has prepared you to meet these challenges and to view them as opportunities for making a difference in the lives of others.
The past several years have brought challenges that nobody could have foreseen.
We have learned to be adaptable and ever in changing situations.
We have learned new technologies and new ways to learn.
We have learned how to care for one another and most importantly, we have learned that Spartans are resilient.
That is evident in the fact that we are all gathered here today to celebrate this incredible milestone you have all achieved.
We are confident as you move to the next stages of your lives, you will hold what you have learned and bring honor to yourself and Michigan State.
This weekend and next 16 MSU colleges honors over 9500 students who are graduating this spring or summer.
The College of Education students comprise of a significant part of this student body at Michigan State.
However, each of you is important to this institution in the ways that transcend the size of your graduating class.
We honor and celebrate your commitment, determination, and accomplishment.
This year we have selected two graduating students to offer remarks on behalf of the class of 2024.
I would first like to introduce Brenda-Vanessa Sewavi (audience cheering) A kinesiology graduate from East Lansing, Michigan.
After graduation, she plans to continue her studies by applying to the accelerated Bachelor of Science and Nursing Program at MSU.
(audience applauding) (Brenda-Vanessa clearing throat) - Thank you, Dean Jackson.
Good evening.
My name is Brenda-Vanessa Sewavi.
It is truly an honor to stand before you all on this momentous occasion.
To our beloved faculty members, esteemed guests, and proud parents, I extend a warm welcome and heartfelt gratitude.
Your unwavering support, kindness, and strength have brought us to this pivotal moment.
The beginning of our time at Michigan State was one of trials and tribulations.
As college freshman Covid babies, our introduction to university was constricted to the four walls of our rooms as we studied literature, anatomy, and every subject that would be most ideal when surrounded by our peers.
I became very crafty with Zoom, but I felt restricted.
It was as if the agency and how I learned was taken away from me.
The return back to campus was a little nerve wracking, maybe even a little strange.
Yet being on a campus like this surrounded by my peers was well worth the wait.
Despite the many challenges we emerged stronger, more resilient and limitless.
I'd like you all to take a moment and ponder the meaning of that word, limitless.
Now, according to Google, to be limitless is to be without end limit or boundary.
I truly believe we Spartans embody the meaning of that word.
In the College of Education, we are limitless.
We are healers, mentors and educators.
We mold, shape, and craft those we encounter.
We inspire.
This is exactly why kinesiology was my chosen field in my studies.
It is fruitful and bountiful in the future it will provide me.
Its power and ability to innovate, create, and invoke change extends far beyond the boundaries of the chosen field.
My opportunities and your opportunities are limitless.
To be limitless is to be willing, to be dauntless, to be kind.
It is to push the status quo, build a new quo, then break the quote you've just built.
As children, we are told that we can be whatever and do whatever we want, that the world is our oyster and that we should claim it.
That still rings true.
There is no goal that is not attainable.
There are no limits.
Michigan State University has provided an environment where we are encouraged to be thinkers, to take our childlike wonderment and ambition and turn it into something tangible, something that will grow.
Growth has been a crucial part of the journey at Michigan State.
In my own journey, I discovered that there is a balance between rigorous academic studying and nurturing another passion, creating films.
What started as a casual interest blossomed into an exploration of storytelling, visual expression, and the power of cinematic art to convey emotions and provoke thought.
Through my filmmaking minor, I found a creative outlet that complimented my major in kinesiology, allowing me to explore complex themes and engage with audiences in meaningful ways.
My time here was never limited.
We were never limited.
Never forget the power and ambition you have inside you.
There are no boundaries, no limits we cannot overcome.
As Spartans, we create boundaries and break them.
We see limits and push past them.
We are a community of trailblazers and pioneers.
To my peers in teacher preparation, as you move on to have your own classrooms, I encourage you to also inspire your future students to be limitless.
You create the future.
The trailblazers, the pioneers.
Our story at Michigan State began here, but it does not end here.
In fact, it is just beginning.
Through our dedication and hard work we earned the degree that we are to be adorned with.
We are being granted the key to the world, that key being our education, which is something no one can take away from us.
In closing, I'd like to leave you with one piece of advice my mother and father reminded me throughout my undergraduate career.
Keep going.
Be strong, your time will come.
This journey towards limitless is not an easy feat.
It is a long, spiraling, winding road full of triumph and defeat, with determination and grit, but it's nothing we cannot overcome.
So go forth, my fellow Spartans.
The world is waiting for us to make our mark, to leave a legacy and to lead with the spirit of kindness, empathy, determination, and to be limitless.
Congratulations, class of 2024.
Go green.
(audience cheering and applauding) - Thank you, Brenda-Vanessa.
Our second speaker is Savanna Solano-Maefeld.
(audience cheering) A special education graduate from Taylor, Michigan.
Next year she will be doing her internship in Wayne Westland Community Schools at Hamilton Elementary.
(audience applauding) - Thank you Dean.
Good evening, everybody.
Family, friends and esteemed graduates of Michigan State University's College of Education, today we gather to celebrate a significant milestone which we have been so eagerly anticipating, our graduation day.
As we stand on the threshold of new beginnings filled with a mix of emotions, excitement, pride, some nervousness, let us take a moment to reflect on a remarkable journey that has led us to this pivotal moment.
First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every one of you.
We did it.
(audience cheering and applauding) (Savanna chuckling) Graduating from the College of Education is no small feat.
It is a testament to our dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment to shaping the future.
As educators and kinesiologists, we know that our impact will be keen and extensive.
We have spent countless hours honing our craft and learning the art of what it means to have the hand in shaping the future.
Today we celebrate not only our individual achievements, but also the collective impact we will have on the world.
Each of us brings an eccentric perspective, skillset, and passion to the table enriching the tapestry of our educational landscape.
We have spent the last several years working side by side sharing similar experiences and from that, bonds have been made and connections have been built.
These are the things that we will continue to carry with us into the next chapter of our lives.
We have gained so much from one another and now it is time for us to pour it into everyone that we encounter.
The same way our families, friends, professors and mentors have poured their love and support into each of us.
The success is not unique to our class as each and every one of you has carried us through this whirlwind we have known as college.
Acting as pillars of strength for the class of 2024, celebrating our triumphs and seeing us through our hardships, for that, we thank you.
Historically speaking, Spartans were known for their teamwork and resiliency against all odds that no soldier was considered superior to another.
I like to believe that those historians were right.
We as Spartans have endured a tremendous amount of heartbreak over the years, but each time we have come out on the other side, stronger and more resilient.
Leaning on our community and our fellow Spartans has allowed us to see the beauty in having a sense of belonging.
May we always hold close in our hearts those who were lost and forever impacted by the tragedies on our campus.
To be a Spartan is to know that Spartans will.
Spartans will continue to strive for a better future.
Spartans will spread love and positivity to every individual they touch, and attempts to knock us down Spartans will come back better than ever each and every time.
They say the Spartans were some of the most disciplined soldiers and that their grit and unity are what led to their great success.
I was bouncing ideas off my mom and dad when I considered writing the speech and I told them if there was a walking definition of resiliency, it would be my graduating class of 2024.
(audience applauding) (audience cheering) The strongest most kindhearted individuals I have ever met have not only been within our college, but in the Spartan community.
To be a Spartan means to have a forever home, to have a forever family.
So I tell you as your Spartan sister, go out there and make a difference.
But don't just make a difference.
Be courageous, be loud, be brave and be proud of where you came from.
Stay true to yourself and the identity you've discovered in your time away from home.
Know that your journey doesn't end here.
In fact, this is only the start.
We call this graduating ceremony a commencement because a new journey is beginning.
To the graduates of the Education program, let your classroom be the breeding ground for innovation, compassion, and positivity.
With each lesson you teach and every connection you make, there is potential to shape the future in ways that are unforeseeable.
Be an advocate for change, a beacon of hope, and a champion of knowledge in a world that longs for ambition.
To the graduates from the Kinesiology program, you have delved into the study of human movement, health and wellness.
If you go on to become coaches, physical therapists, or fitness instructors know that your expertise will empower others to lead healthier, more active lives.
(Savanna clearing throat) As we embark on this next chapter of our lives, I strongly encourage you to carry the values instilled in you during your tenure at the College of Education.
Looking at a situation for its true essence and recognizing the broader context.
Even when met with negativity, you will always find the positive in the scenario.
Continue to find the beauty in the world that can be so distasteful.
Remember that education is not just about picking up a textbook and memorizing but about encouraging individuals to reach their full potential regardless of abilities, backgrounds, or circumstances.
In a world that is constantly changing, there has never been a greater need for dedicated, warm-hearted educators and kinesiologists.
In closing, I leave you with a quote from Malala Yousafzai.
"One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world."
Class of 2024, go forth and be the change makers, the difference creators and the dream realizers this world so desperately needs.
Congratulations graduates, the future is ours to shape.
Go green.
(audience cheering and applauding) - Thank you, Savanna.

(laughs) - College of Education faculty members, they share in this celebration for these graduates.
The faculty's contributions to their success has been essential and are a source of great pride to us.
College of Education faculty members are deeply committed to contributing to their professions through research, service, and the preparation of future leaders.
The reputation of our college's faculty and programs has again been recognized in the recent release of the 2024 edition of the US News and World Report rankings of graduate programs.
For the 30th consecutive year our graduate programs in elementary and secondary education have been ranked number one in the nation.
(audience applauding and cheering) In total, nine programs both in education and kinesiology are currently ranked in the annual publication of top programs and specialties.
We hope you share in our pride in these rankings.
They reflect the dedication of our faculty, the quality of our programs, the support of our dedicated staff, and the achievements of our students and graduates.
I hope you will appreciate the value added to your baccalaureate degree because it was earned at an internationally prestigious university and a College of Education with a consistently strong reputation.
(audience applauding and cheering) Now it is fitting that I ask those representing the faculty to rise and accept our gratitude for your contributions to the education of our graduates.
(audience applauding and cheering) We appreciate your fine work.
(audience cheering) There is another group of individuals who have made important contributions to the success of our graduates.
Our advisors have guided and supported these graduates from summer orientation through our commencement ceremony today.
They have answered questions, solved problems, and been a source of encouragement when expectations seemed overwhelming or the right path was hard to find.
They have cheered our graduates on as they developed from new freshmen onto their own for their first time to young adults ready to take their place in the world.
They have also assisted with our ceremony today.
I ask the College of Education advisors to rise and be recognized for their important work.
(audience applauding and cheering) And there is yet another important group of individuals who have contributed, love, understanding, and support, emotional as well as financial, and they share in the achievements we recognize today.
Accordingly, we ask the families of our graduates to rise and give us an opportunity to express our thanks and appreciation.
(audience applauding and cheering) I also thank our readers, Linda Kernohan and Jamie Paisley and the special thanks goals to Robin Linkhart for helping to coordinate this event.
(audience applauding) Finally, the College of Education Alumni Board of Directors wishes to congratulate each of you.
We are confident that you take with you new perspectives and innovative ideas that will shape the society of tomorrow and contribute in meaningful ways to the learning and wellbeing of others, and we want to hear all about it.
Let us know where life takes you via email, social media, or the alumni website, and we will celebrate with you.
Please consider donating your time and talents to the college.
The college's Alumni Board of Directors, they facilitate connections between alumni and current students through events, outreach, and scholarships.
We look forward to learning more about your interests and engaging with you in the future.
I now invite all of you to join in the singing the alma mater, "MSU Shadows."
We will be accompanied by the MSU Symphony Band and Landon Black.
Guests may meet their graduates upstairs.
