I would like to welcome everyone to this very special ceremony where we pay tribute to those who have successfully completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree in engineering.
And to alumni, faculty and friends receiving special recognition for their outstanding career accomplishments.
This is a joyous but solemn occasion.
Out of respect for those speaking and those being recognized, I ask you hold your applause in celebration until the end of each segment of the program.
You're also reminded to please silence your cell phones.
Today we bring together our graduates, along with their families and friends to honor your accomplishments.
We gather today while becoming mindful that the community is still mourning the violence within our community on February 13th.
It may feel uncomfortable to celebrate while the occasion still consumes much of our thoughts and feelings.
We are dedicated to supporting everyone who's impacted by this event, including the students who were injured, witnesses to the violence and the families of those who were injured.
As we begin to shift to a celebration of your accomplishments, let us pause for a moment of silence to consider how we can live our lives in a way that honors all Spartans, including those who are no longer with us.
Thank you.
Today's ceremony represents a culmination of discipline, intellectual work, and creative imagination.
Certainly no small accomplishment for those- For the many of you and your families here.
Today, the sacrifice has been long and great.
The degree that you have earned acknowledges your success and honors those who have encouraged it.
You've all done all this in the face of some of the most challenging times this university and this world have seen.
It's been a tough time to be a Spartan and you as students have been asked to participate, stand up and voice your opinions in ways that those before you have not.
I commend all of you for your commitment to MSU and for coming through these troubled times with grace.
Our wish is that you'll always be leaders who generously use your intelligence and your knowledge to improve the quality of life for your community, to advance the common good and to renew hope in the human spirit.
Our faculty, the administrators, and the MSU trustees are very proud of all of you.
Please accept our warmest congratulations and best wishes.
(applause) I'd like to now ask a member of the 2023 graduating class to reflect upon her engineering undergraduate experience.
I'm pleased to introduce Ms. Mikayla Norton, an applied engineering sciences graduate, who was selected by the faculty and the engineering student council to provide the student address.
Mikayla is from Howell, Michigan and is the daughter of Dean and Lisa Norton.
Mikayla.
(audience cheers and applauds) - Thank you Dean Kempel for that kind introduction.
Thank you, Class of 2023, Engineering Student Council for inviting me.
Thank you distinguished faculty, family, and loved ones.
I'd like to give a special shout out to my parents, both Spartan alumni, and to my brother and soon-to-be sister-in-law who flew all the way from California to be here.
Even though he's a Wolverine, we still love him.
(audience laughs) And thank you to my class, our class, the class of 2023.
My name is Mikayla and I am so excited to be here with you all today and honored to represent our class of Spartan engineers.
Show of hands, how many of us are happy to be graduating?
How many of us are sad to be graduating?
How many are both?
I'm feeling the both.
Michigan State is proudly my home and even after the hardship we faced this semester, my connection to this place became far deeper and more complex than I ever imagined.
My sense of being a Spartan is far stronger than it ever would have been.
I hope we can all treasure this as the legacy left behind by our fellow Spartans.
But we are more than Spartans.
We are Spartan engineers.
(audience cheers) More importantly, we're now alumni.
Pretty soon.
Someone once told me that when you are a college student, you're in a community that chose you.
But once you graduate, you are in a community you choose to be in.
Over four years, we have learned how different we are.
We've learned how we process both stress and success, both joy and loss, unique to each of us.
But there are things that will tie us together forever.
We went through CSE 231, circuits, thermodynamics, and all of those calculus credits.
We got up too early and stayed up way too late.
We endured what feels like hundreds of Zoom calls.
We stood in line for those disgusting Spartan spit kits and all of those Izzone tickets.
Coach Izzo told us we need to be there for each other.
He also told us we all have a voice.
We all have a way to move the needle with our own voice and with that message in mind, I wanted to talk about being present in each other's lives.
About talking with honesty and listening with earnestness.
About bringing our authentic selves to as many days as we can.
Just imagine if we could be that intentional, even some of the time.
We all wanted to become engineers in order to solve problems and maybe even change the world for the better.
I hope we will all try to do that.
Just imagine that.
Imagine if every day we tried to bring our best selves.
if we tried to conduct ourselves with intent and authenticity.
Imagine the through line we could create between what we bring to our daily work and how we are perceived as a result.
And how that perception itself can help us be change agents in the world.
Imagine what that would say about you.
What it would say about MSU and the legacy of our community.
We will always be united by what we have faced together.
An unfathomable pandemic, unimaginable violence.
We have truly stood in the deep end together.
If you've found your voice after all of those challenges, don't lose it.
If voices have risen around you that really speak to you, listen.
Maybe that can be the legacy of being a Spartan engineer and maybe the legacy of this class of 2023.
That we show up.
We listen.
We are there for it every day.
We build teams, we collaborate, we lead, we lift each other up.
If we did that, if that was the hallmark of our time at MSU, wouldn't that be something spectacular?
We all came in on our own journey and we will all leave on our own path, but I know wherever life takes us next, I will always be grateful for this Spartan family.
Before I take my chair, please join me in a round of applause for anyone who helped you get here.
Family, friends, old teachers, tutors, coaches and mentors.
They will always be part of our Spartan family too.
Clap for them.
Clap for the person next to you.
Clap for yourselves.
Go green.
Thank you.
(audience applauds) - Well, that's a hard act to follow.
Thank you, Mikayla, for your thoughtful comments on behalf of all the engineering graduates.
Turning to the award and recognition part of the program, we begin with the Claud R. Erickson Distinguished Alumni Award.
This award is given annually to a graduate of the College of Engineering who's attained the highest level professional accomplishment, provided distinguished and meritorious service to the college and to the engineering profession, and engaged in voluntary service at the local, state, or in a national level.
The award is named for Claud Erickson, who received four engineering degrees from MSU, beginning with a bachelor of science in 1922.
He also studied law and was qualified to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
Continuing in the same spirit for which Claud lived his life, we gather here today to honor another distinguished alumna and add her to the list of those the college holds forth as examples for our graduates.
I'm pleased to introduce Cindy Westerhof, Vice Chair of the Engineering Alumni Board who will introduce this year's recipient.
Cindy.
(audience applauds) - Thank you Leo.
As chair of the College of Engineering Alumni Board, it is my honor to congratulate you, the students soon to be graduates, and welcome you to the alumni family.
We are proud of your accomplishments and look forward to your continued contact with the college and with MSU.
It is my honor and pleasure to introduce to you the recipient of the 2023 Claud Erickson Distinguished Award Donnie Haye.
(Cindy and audience claps) Donnie is a global business leader with multiple IBM executive positions in operations, finance, service delivery, and transformation.
She is a recognized leader, enhancing client services and business operations through the development and implementation of innovative analytics, all- AI solutions and automation.
With accompanying process transformational.
Donnie began her career with IBM as a product manager holding various positions before becoming the first ever woman's site controller for IBM.
She continued on at IBM, holding several vice presidential roles, as well as CFO for IBM in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
While at MSU, Donnie was a member of a number of student organizations, honor societies, and a member of the 1980 homecoming court.
She still serves MSU as a member of the MSU Foundation Advisory Board and served for 10 years on the College of Engineering Advisory board.
She credits her time at MSU and what she learned here in the College of Engineering as instrumental in her career success over the years.
Please join me in congratulating my friend Donnie.
(audience applauds) - Thank you, Cindy, and my thanks to the dean and the faculty of this great College of Engineering.
Congratulations graduates, yeah!
(audience claps) And congratulations to all those that helped you achieve this milestone today.
Whether you're here in the Breslin or wherever you are, thank you.
We congratulate you.
You guys as graduates are my heroes and heroines.
To have earned your engineering degree, which is hard enough to do in the best of times, but to have done it through a hopefully once in a lifetime pandemic and then through the painful days that have followed February 13th.
I am in awe.
I actually wanna ask you all for advice, but I kind of understand that's not the way this gig is supposed to work, so I will humbly share a few things that I have learned along the way.
Now, none of these suggestions are rocket science, but I do share them from my heart and from my experience.
First, never stop learning and being curious.
Now, I know that you've been through years of studying and learning and you're smart enough to know you have to learn the technical elements of your next position, whether in a corporation, at a university, in government, in an NGO.
Wherever you're gonna be.
However, I would also suggest that you learn and be curious about the non-technical elements of your workplace as well.
How are decisions made and under what circumstances?
Why does certain projects get that funding and certain not?
If it's not apparent, ask your management.
And speaking of management, observe what leadership styles work and under what circumstances.
As important, look at what management styles don't work.
So take note of the people you admire and how they handle situations and motivate people.
By noting all these learnings, you have the opportunity to be more effective as your role in the organization increases and you move into leadership and decision making positions.
Second piece of advice, don't be afraid to take the high beta assignment.
Now, what do I mean by this?
In the stock market, high beta stocks move in a more amplified dramatic fashion versus the market average.
These high beta opportunities that I reference are likely to be somewhat risky, but I believe offer a greater opportunity for learning.
When I was just a few years into my career at IBM, and yeah, that was decades ago, okay, I was offered the opportunity to move to Tokyo and take a position in the Asia Pacific headquarters.
I had never been to Japan or Asia.
I did not speak nor read Japanese, and I'd never been in the finance function.
This was a high beta offer.
I had more people telling me not to take the opportunity than those who are encouraging it.
But something in my head told me it can be an important learning opportunity.
I had seen what the Asian car manufacturers had done to the US automotive industry in my home state, and at that time, Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC and the other Asian manufacturers were thought to be the biggest threats to the high end and very profitable mainframe business of IBM.
I thought it'd be be helpful to learn how our competitors did business in their own region.
So I spent two years as a pricing analyst for mainframe servers and storage.
The highs were higher, the lows were lower.
When things weren't going well, I felt very isolated.
I couldn't just call up my dear mom and dad nor see 'em for a hug, and I did- but I did learn a lot technically.
I grew enormously as a business person.
I met and worked with people from all over the world.
I learned Asian business practices.
I hope I also, you know, helped a little along the way for my Japanese male counterparts to see that women could lead.
Most importantly, though, I grew as a citizen of the world.
I met so many cool people in my travels.
I rode elephants in Nepal and camels in India like 50 miles from the Pakistani border.
Perhaps I was a little crazy back then.
The friends I made through that time are my friends today.
These were a couple of the best and most impactful two years of my life.
So I encourage you to take those high beta opportunities and learn from them.
The last point of advice, work to make it better.
Certainly the world has a lot of challenges that we all face.
We know what they are, I don't have to list them.
But I have great faith that your generation will use your creativity and diligence to help society address these monumental issues.
Now, you may not individually be working on one of them, however, there are gonna be many issues and inefficiencies, but you can work to address in the roles that you have.
Don't be one of those people that just complains.
Those negative people kind of drain the energy from others.
Be someone who notes what's not working and proactively work to find solutions.
This won't be easy.
Many people will tell you no along the way.
Trust me on that.
A solution may ultimately be only an incremental improvement, but it will be needed and it will be rewarding to you.
And this approach can be used of making it better.
Apply it in all areas: your work, your home, organizations you support.
I love the slogan "Spartans will".
Spartans are smart, diligent, resilient and can work with others to get things done.
Together we'll make it better.
So in closing, my congratulations again to you and all those who made this day happen.
You should be incredibly proud.
Keep learning and be curious.
Go for those high beta opportunities.
And work to make things better in every role you have.
God's blessings and happiness to you all.
And forever.
go green.
- [Graduate] Go white!
