Let's give everyone a round of applause.
(audience applauding) This year, the College of Natural Science Student Advisory Council has selected our student speaker.
Whether you know them as Elise or as Fletcher Kirkwood, they are the model of a true Spartan.
Fletcher is a member of the Honors College and will be earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Geoscience.
They are originally from South Leon, Michigan and have found a home in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department over the last five years.
Fletcher has participated as an undergraduate assistant in research with Dr. Burke, Dr. Hardesty, Dr. Zarnetske, and Dr. Gottfried, studying areas such as micropaleontology, paleooceanography, hydroecology, and (indistinct) physiology.
They have been the recipient of the Lucille Drake Pringle and Gordon H. Pringle Endowed Fellowship and the Warren W. and Anneliese C. Wood Undergraduate Research Award.
Fletcher has also served as the undergraduate representative to the Earth and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Committee and worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant in the department for the last three years.
They have just finished their year as the Geology Club president after three years of involvement and leadership.
Fletcher also has had a poem published in the Red Cedar Review.
Dr. Tyrone Rooney, faculty member and undergraduate program director for the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences nominated Fletcher to speak today.
Dr. Rooney states, "Fletcher's impact on the MS community is far reaching.
Their leadership, advocacy, and dedication have enriched the university experience for all.
Fletcher embodies the spirit of Michigan State, a place where excellence, inclusivity, and innovation converge."
So we'll welcome Fletcher to the stage.
(audience cheering and applauding) - Good afternoon.
To President Guskiewicz, Interim Provost Jeitschko, the Board of Trustees, Dean Duxbury, and all other esteemed faculty and staff of Michigan State University, as well as my wonderful friends and family, welcome.
This is one of the highest honors of my life, not only to speak to you all today, but to graduate as a Spartan.
I consider myself incredibly lucky to walk beside you all on behalf of the College of the Natural Science and the Honors College in order to receive my bachelor's in Environmental Geoscience with direct plans to graduate studies in geology in hopes of one day becoming a professor myself.
My colleagues, if you'll allow me, I would like to testify to the unifying force that is Michigan State University.
As every one of us have woven unravable bonds with this campus through our laughter and tears, memories and experiences, we have inextricably become intertwined with the university, and therefore, each other.
To lift up one of us is to lift up us all.
Every single person in this room is worthy of recognition.
To all of you, you have made the past four years into the most efficacious and supportive of my life, whether it has been through interpersonal encouragement, through myself and sympathetic faculty, or the all-encompassing support of a community rallied around each other after horrific tragedies, the Spartan community has shown nothing but our will and compassion to each other at the world at large.
It is simply not enough to mention our collective and individual troubles and then move on.
Is it not given there were going to be struggles in college?
Is it not given there were going to be hardships?
Inevitably, there were.
But what is essential to this story is that all of us sitting here today have come out the other side stronger than ever before.
Every single person in this room has taken everything life has thrown at them and taken it in stride, all the while being someone else's shoulder to lean on when the times get tough.
From homework to hell week, from issues big and small, we have been there for each other.
This, to me, is what it truly means to be a Spartan, to be celebrated as an indispensable asset, but all the while recognizing that you are part of a vast, uplifting community of people who understand you and your experiences.
This is a bond that can never be broken.
Our times together will continue to shape us for the rest of our lives, the people we've met, things we've learned, memories we shared.
All of this has become an inseparable part of who we are, and who we are are Spartans.
For everything that we've loved and lost over these past several years, we still stand proud and we stand together.
We are the people we are today because of our time here, something that will always be shared and never change.
I urge you all to never forget the value we see in each other, for it allows us to see the value in ourselves.
You all are deserving of every single accolade you receive here today and more.
Go forward in life with the knowledge that your worth is not determined by your time spent or how much you struggled or succeeded here, but rather your experiences have been colored by your inherent value.
And these things in tandem have shaped our class into an exceptional student body.
It is with the bittersweet heart that I, as well as we all, move on.
But I take pride in the fact that we can move on together.
For one final time in our undergraduate careers, but certainly not the last in our lives, go green.
(graduates cheering and applauding) - Thank you, Fletcher.

(audience applauding) - Thank you, Dean Duxbury.
On behalf of the MSU Board of Trustees, I welcome all of the graduates, family and friends, who are with us this afternoon at the undergraduate commencement.
Under the Michigan Constitution, the Board of Trustees is the governing body of the university by whose authority degrees are awarded.
Today's ceremony represents the culmination of discipline, intellectual work, and creative imagination.
Certainly, no small accomplishment.
For many of you and your families here today, the sacrifices have been long and great.
The degree that you have earned acknowledges your success and honors those who have encouraged it.
Our wish is that you will always be leaders who generously use your intelligence to improve the quality of life in your communities, to advance the common good, and to renew hope in the human spirit.
Our faculty, the administrators, and the MSU Board of Trustees are all very proud of you.
Please accept our warmest congratulations and best wishes.

Will the students who are present please rise and remain so as your names are called?

Welcome, Kristina.
(audience cheering and applauding) - Congratulations to the 2024 Spartan graduating class for all that you have accomplished thus far and all you have planned for the next season of life.
You have endless possibilities ahead of you, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect upon one of my favorite quotes by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
"If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough."
And when I was asked to give this talk, I reflected upon all of the things that have changed over time.
It's been a short amount of time since I've been in your seat, but probably long enough.
While I was studying abroad during the summer, I was thinking about the fact that I was finishing my coursework here on campus, had that summer abroad, and then I was gonna go do my internship down at Henry Ford Hospital down in Detroit.
When I was abroad, I was paying for prepaid phone cards to call home.
We really didn't have cell phones back then.
We had internet cafes where we had to pay to use a computer, hoping that maybe someone would read my email message within a week and find out what updates I'd been up to.
And then I think about where you all are now.
You're on the edge of amazing technology, AI technology that has the ability to change how we teach, we do research, work, live and play.
The second time I came back to campus, I was a TA.
I was in graduate school functioning under Dr. Kathy Doig.
And we taught a class over in Berkey Hall, basically live streaming, which was high-end technology back then.
Between two different classrooms, 'cause we couldn't fit everyone in one classroom, we would record those sessions, posting those online.
And I think about how ahead of the pack Dr. Doig was back then.
But really, it laid the groundwork for what now is just an abundance of online learning that really helped facilitate, allowing all of you to continue our education throughout the COVID pandemic.
So there's a couple points of Spartan wisdom I'd like to share and pass along to all of you.
And I share this despite the fact that I have two teenage boys who often remind me that they know more about this world than I do, and that somehow, I've subscribed to Mom TikTok.
I didn't know there were two versions to subscribe to, but apparently, I'm on the mom version.
And so over the decades, I've witnessed my fellow Spartans have a differentiating drive to give back.
It's very different than other colleges, I won't name who they are, doing more than is expected, routinely letting me know that this profound yet simple motto has connected all of us through your journey here.
And that motto is something that I see all over campus now.
It was never put into words before while I was here on campus.
And that's of course Spartans will.
These simple two words embody the Spartan spirit.
It's a promise, it's a commitment to one another and the world, and most of all, identifies your determined perseverance despite all odds.
You've already dedicated countless hours to studying.
A lot of you stood up, identifying the fact that you've been working to pay a lot of your bills, which, by the way, don't go away.
You also stood up to say that you volunteered a lot of hours.
Please continue to do so.
We need lots of volunteers in this world.
And maybe you've even been participating in sports and music and clubs.
As you enter this next chapter of life, you're going to be representing that Spartan will.
You're no longer just yourself.
You are now a Spartan.
Wherever you go, people will look at you and reflect upon you as that Spartan.
Those who went before you paved the way, and you likely will unknowingly pave and open doors for others.
A perfect example of this is how I was able to bring on board medical laboratory science interns to Michigan Medicine.
It was really an easy sell, only because we'd been hiring MSU interns there for years, and they always exceeded expectations.
Your successes become our shared success after you leave this campus, because Spartans will represent.
The next big advice is what they talked about already, and that's your connectedness.
I don't think that was for me.
Connectedness, most of all, is what will help you through the hard decisions and moments along with having a cheering squad, thank you for that, behind you during your triumphs.
This was true when I started my laboratory career, literally on the edge of September 11th with all the uncertainty that followed, all the celebrations that happened, career advancements, weddings, births, all those things that happen in life, leading to all the issues that we face.
Another bit of advice I'd like to say is don't be afraid to connect back with your faculty on campus.
I keep in contact with all of my former and current faculty for advice, and I try to give back by coming back on campus to talk to undergrads, because Spartans will give back.
Look for ways to give back, just as the BLD program reaches out to alumni, and ask those alumni to write letters to recent graduates.
Those graduates who are gonna become the next medical laboratory scientists, who are gonna perform tests to diagnose patients and also help make treatment decisions for those patients.
Never miss out on an opportunity to connect with other Spartans around the globe, because you're gonna find us everywhere.
I have many friendships that have lasted a long time.
You probably figured it out with some of the sequence of the timeline I've given you since MSU, and I likely wouldn't be here today if I didn't have my friend Kelly.
We met on the fourth floor of Holmes Hall.
I know some of you are in Lyman Briggs.
So shout out to all the Lyman Briggs people here.
And I've kept in touch with her over the years.
She's just one of my many friends from Holmes Hall.
We've shared all kinds of career journeys, various life adventures.
And when Kelly decided to go back to school, to graduate school, she took a leap of faith for an exciting new program that was being developed by the BLD program.
It was a mix of business, science, and management.
If it wasn't for Kelly, along with some added support from my parents and my husband, I don't think I would've been able to have the strength to take that leap of faith as well.
I had a pretty good paying job with really good benefits, and it's really hard to leave to go back full time and come back to school.
So with that courage, now I hope to repay a little of that Spartan strength that she shared with me by helping Kelly, because right now, Kelly's going through a really difficult time as she currently battles breast cancer.
And that's just another evident, these are all the ups and downs that were already identified previously, because Spartans will be there for one another.
When you look around at those that are sitting next to you, know that today is not the end.
Distance does not stop you being able to be connected to one another.
We're in a digital world after all.
As my yoga teacher always says, and she often reminds me, because I like to do a lot of things and I have a problem saying no, make sure you're being a human being, not just a human doing.
And so once again, congratulations, graduates.
Go with honor, go with pride, go with Spartans.
And if you ever have that moment of imposter syndrome, which you're bound to have, no matter where you are in your career, and you think that you're just too small in this big world to make a difference, reflect upon this last parting quote that's attributed to Betty Reese.
"If you think you're too small to be effective, you've never been in bed with a mosquito."
Go green.

And it's a bittersweet moment for me as these celebrations are just wonderful, seeing all the student energy and people going out into the world to make a difference.
So thank you for staying, and let's do a couple things and then close this out.
So to get things started, we would invite all of you to join in singing the first stanza of the Alma Mater, MSU Shadows, followed by the MSU Fight Song.
After singing, we request our guests and graduates be seated and remain in their places until after the recessional of the platform party and the faculty.
Thank you.
