>>> COMMUNITY MEMBERS GATHERED TONIGHT FOR THE SECOND OF FOUR FORMS ON WHAT CHICAGOANS WANT TO SEE FROM THEIR NEW POLICE SUPERINTENDENT.
NICK BLUMBERG WAS THERE.
>> IT WAS A FULL HOUSE WHERE MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION ON ACCOUNTABILITY TOOK COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS FROM RESIDENTS.
IT IS PART OF THE PROCESS WHERE AN INDEPENDENT PANEL WILL COME UP WITH THREE CANDIDATES FOR MAYOR ELECT BRANDON JOHNSON TO CHOOSE FROM.
HE SAYS IT IS THE FIRST TIME THAT CHICAGOANS GET TO HAVE A SAY BEFORE THE SLATE OF CANDIDATES IS ANNOUNCED.
>> THEY SHOULD BE OPTIMISTIC, BECAUSE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS EVER BEEN DONE, SO YOU CAN'T MEASURE IT AGAINST ANYTHING ELSE.
WE ARE SHOWING OURSELVES.
WE ARE SEEING A CHANGE ACROSS THE CITY AS IT RELATES TO THIS PROCESS, BECAUSE WE ARE OPENING THE DOORS TO THE SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH.
>> COMMISSIONERS COMMENT ON A RANGE OF ISSUES, INCLUDING WORKING WITH YOUNG CHICAGOANS, RESTORING TRUST IN THE DEPARTMENT, AND RENEWING CALLS FOR A NEW SUPERINTENDENT WITHIN THE RANKS.
>> A LOT OF THESE YOUNG PEOPLE AND A LOT OF ADULTS DO NOT TRUST , AND WE HAVE EVERY REASON NOT TO.
SO THE PERSON THAT WE SELECT HAS TO BE A COMMUNITY PERSON.
THEY HAVE TO BE SOMEBODY WHO HAS PASSION FOR PEOPLE.
OFFICERS NEED TO SEE INDIVIDUALS AS NEIGHBORS.
>> A LOT OF KIDS HAVE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.
THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPEAK UP OR HOW TO READ OR WRITE.
THAT IS ALSO PARENTS' FAULT.
I WILL SAY THAT BECAUSE SOMETIMES KIDS DO NOT HAVE PARENTS.
SO IN OUR REALITY, WE NEED TO TRY TO BE PARENTS TO EACH OTHER.
>> YOU SHOULD HIRE THE NUMBER OF POLICE OFFICERS THAT ARE NEEDED SO THAT THE POLICE OFFICERS WHO ARE WORKING CANNOT BE OVERWORKED.
THIS IS WHY WE HAVE SO MANY THAT ARE COMMITTING SUICIDE.
OUR TAX DOLLARS FUND THE POLICE, SO WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BEG OR PLEAD FOR RESPECTFUL POLICING.
WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO DEMAND IT!
POLICING EXISTS ONLY WITH THE CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE.
WE DO NOT CONSENT TO POLICING THE WAY IT HAS BEEN PRACTICED IN THE CITY.
>> THE COMMISSION SAYS IT WILL HOLD A THIRD FORM ONLINE AND A FOURTH ON THE NORTH SIDE.
